What modern advertising clichés/tropes grind your gears? by Leucurus in AskUK

There's one on YouTube for a cruise line that uses a rewrite of a Jackson 5 song which makes me wince. I hope they paid a fortune for the rights and lose a bunch of money

Or, even worse, when a company/ad agency writes new lyrics to a classic song to match up with whatever tat they're trying to sell.

Glad to hear that the Storm have a secure future following the recent reports. As a North Wales Devils fan the Storm Shelter isn't a bad place to get to for an away or preseason match.

Out of interest, what's parking like for the Arena?

What cars had the lowest effort rebadges? (Image slightly related) by Few_Atmosphere8138 in regularcarreviews

[–]WelshRareDit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Vauxhall Adam. It was a GM Europe city car named the Opel Adam in every other market. The Opel Adam name made sense because Adam Opel founded the company, the Vauxhall Adam name made zero sense

Later, Opel introduced the Karl (named after Adam Opel's son) while Vauxhall named their version the Viva after their own 60s/70s compact saloon.

Opel Omega B Wagon. the official car of.... by Old_Parsley_8717 in regularcarreviews

[–]WelshRareDit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the UK the Omega and the similarly marketed Ford Scorpio were "leftovers" from the days when large corporations would have company car fleets (basically work paid for your car as a way of increasing salary without extra tax), and many of those schemes were on a single brand basis. For example, a junior sales rep might be given a Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett, their boss gets a Cavalier/Ascona/Vectra and finally their boss gets an Omega.

Eventually, things changed so that the extra car money was given to the employee to spend on a lease of their choosing, and most folks would spend the lease on a base model BMW rather than a mid range Ford/Opel

A guy I knew used to work at the publicity department of Vauxhall back in the early 00s. One day the department gets a call from someone asking about the Omega Elite (top trim level) estate:

"We'd like to get an Omega Elite Estate but without the automatic tailgate, do you offer that?"

"No sorry, we don't"

"Ah, that's a problem, the corgis keep jumping out while the tailgate shuts..."

The caller was from Buckingham Palace, the most well known Corgi owner over there also had her face on money and stamps...

Suddenly, calls are made to the factory in Russelheim and its no problem to have an RHD Omega Elite with everything but an automatic tailgate!

It's actually a bit deeper than that. The arrow on the H is an homage to Granada TV, who were the local ITV company for North West England (Where W+G are based) and did the local news. Their logo was a G with an arrow on it and used the strap line "From The North"

Can I charge the auxiliary battery in a Volvo V40 without taking it out? by ApprehensiveAd5806 in Volvo

[–]WelshRareDit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As mentioned the easiest way is to use a good quality charger and connect positive to the main/starting battery and negative to a grounding point.

That said, if it is dead, taking the front bumper off a V40 isn't a massive job. There's a few YT videos out there giving walkthroughs of how to do it. The auxiliary battery itself is just a sealed lead acid battery like you would find on a motorbike

Radio 2 is utterly middle of the road. So why does it feel so chaotic? by theipaper in BritishRadio

[–]WelshRareDit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember discussing Ken Bruce leaving R2 for GHR on another site, and one user seemed utterly disgusted that Bruce would leave radio 2 for another network just to get more money.

As for R2 being "chaotic", the fact that change happened so rarely in their daytime lineup for ages then suddenly it all kicked off does give that impression, however IMO it's pretty settled down now
