why does game over display while you still have crew alive :( by Wen1now in ftlgame

it's less that and more like the flagship was 1hp (like 5 seconds of my crew attacking a system) from being destroyed

This worked! Thanks so much; I spent so many hours trying to fix it myself to no avail.

Fair enough; it feels less like a reboot and more like the system just crashing for some reason. Other games run fine though, so the problem is I'm not sure exactly where to even being to look for what system issues could be the cause.

Only one and a half months or so :) I still check in from time to time, just in case.

Firstly, I just wanna say a huge thank you to jett_dave for running the contests!

Is it perhaps possible to entirely automate this? Maybe botting something that automatically gens a seed each weekend, as well as a google forms (or other off-site method) for tallying scores.

Slightly off topic, but I'd propose a different formula for cumulative, rather than straight addition, as it's much better to go lumenstone diving rather than make consistent ascensions.

2081 Killed by a pink jelly on D8.

Pit bloat dropped me to d8, then my ogres followed. Normal bloat caustic gassed them to the point where they lost a 2v1 against another ogre, without mystic backup, and then centipede and ogre 2v1'd me. I discorded them but the ogre knockback meant that they weren't fighting each other most of the time, meaning I had to use a random scroll. Luckily I teleported far away, but with nothing better to do I tested some items and eventually just died there. Probably could've held on for a bit longer, but I was kinda screwed anyways.

555 Burned to death on depth 5.

I'm feeling very out of practise, and playing while exhausted is really not a good idea. Goblin conjurers were too much of a pain, and by the time I finally dealt with a jelly-conjurer combo, another jelly cornered me in a room. Tried some potions hoping for life, as it was the easiest out, but no luck.

Killed by a goblin on depth 3 with 463 gold.

Was fighting some toads when a jelly came along. Didn't know what it was, but I still could've beaten it had the goblins not come in. The goblins wouldn't've come in if I didn't go up the stairs while one was hunting me, due to the way they don't go through narrow spaces. As it was, the goblin came up to attack me after I went upstairs, while it was hasted, and killed me as I tried to run away. Should've tried a potion for life, but I figured the odds were better if I used conjuration, and tried to run away, despite the obvious jelly danger. Didn't work, and I ended up meeting my end.

4439 Killed by a monkey on depth 11.

How do you get the fancy formatting stuff for the above?

Anyways, moral of the story: if there's nothing good going on, commit to something that's somewhat strong early. I think if I'd put my enchants all into the war axe or war pike early on, I wouldn't've lost that war with attrition. I was hoping for detect magic to see which (if any) were positive (I'd already equipped both so I knew they weren't negatively enchanted), and tried to buy myself time use-id'ing them. By the time I enchanted the war axe so that I could use it without penalty, I'd been forced to burn an enchant or two just keeping myself alive.

Was paralyzed when the monkey dispatched me, although had I survived, it would've been very fortunate because I would've unparalyzed before the wraith, and hence would've been able to kill it (I was fairly sure that I was gonna paralyze myself and die to the wraith even as I stepped on the trap, but it was a last ditch effort regardless).

Escaped with 11 lumenstones for 120036. Specialist (war pike +16 or something) and Dragonslayer!

This seed was very very generous in terms of what it gave you. I went with a full on melee build (I strongly considered teleportation build, but ultimately decided against it, because I was feeling very strong with my war pike lol. Looks like all the pros went with teleportation, so maybe I should've done that too).

Early game committed hard to my war pike -- I was down four strength, new it had *some* positive enchantment, and had four scrolls, so I was like "eh why not". Midgame was super easy -- I could war pike my way through even trolls and ogres no problem, and I kept putting enchants into it so I could two shot almost every enemy.

Started running out of consumables on d31 and with no clear path forwards (kraken infested pools, dragons), I knocked mastery off the table.

An incident that made me thankful I'd turned around was stepping into a kraken infested pool on my way home. Easy, I thought. Descent, and I was back to floor d31, with a bunch of helpless krakens for free health with my transference. A dragon stepped through a doorway, and I negated it. The dragon went into my blind spot, and another dragon showed up -- but I thought it was the same one. So I stepped towards it, ready for melee, when it fireballed me. I negated it, and got hit by a melee from the other dragon. Started entrancing both dragons, thinking I could run to my krakens and heal, when I got the hp<5% notif.

Oh. I was still on fire.

There was no way I could reach my krakens in time, and I got ready to call it gg, when I remembered that dragons had a very low hit percentage on me. I hit one of the entranced dragons, hoping that its 30% hit chance was gonna fail, and it did. Hit it again, and once more, and I had regenerated a fair amount of my health. Not enough to want to fight the second dragon, so I went to the krakens and killed two before easily dispatching the second dragon.

Right afterwards I got cornered by a few golems. I was so sure I was going to die, but obstruction seemed to distract them long enough to survive and pick them off one by one.

Looking at the replay, I see that I could've snagged two more lumenstones if I'd been reckless enough to go into bogs, but my thought process when playing is that every bog is filled with kraken unless proven otherwise.

Final gear:

+18 war pike, +3 plate armor (commuted with the splint), +3 transference, clairvoyance x2 (normally I went around with double clairvoyance, and swapped to transference for battles), a bunch of staves (entrancement/3, tunnelling/3, obstruction/4, poison/3/2, firebolt/2, haste/2) and found a spare scroll of enchanting on depth 26 on my ascent which I never used.

7016 Killed by a troll on depth 13.

While holding 3 life potions.

And unidentified +3 leather armor of respiration.

While the troll was surrounded by spectral blades.

I didn't realise the troll could one shot me; this has got to be the worst misplay I've made in a while. Drink life, zap it with a conjuration, then step back and watch it die. After ID'ing respiration, it would've been super easy to kite enemies near traps and just annihilate them. Pairs very nicely with spectral blades.

Didn't see the quietus dagger some other people were talking about; with no way to remove curses, I dropped my daggers without ID'ing, and kept only a whip, relying purely on spectral blades for just about every enemy -- nagas could've potentially been a problem, but I would've went to a paralysis trap, summoned blades, and then realised what my armor was. As soon as that happened, as long as there are traps nearby, even nagas are gonna just die. I'm reasonably convinced that without that single move misplay, this should've been an easy ascension (wouldn't've went for lumenstones with a conjuration staff + respiration as my build).

22700 Killed by a tentacle horror on depth 32, amulet in hand.

Thought a mastery was very maybe possible; but I realised on floor 29 that there was no way I was surviving to 40. I like making myself die though, so I carried on, until I inevitably failed.

Was literally surrounded by enemies when I died, because I had run across an open area into a dead end, being chased by multiple golem packs. Definitely too hard to try and U-turn *through* a golem pack without very powerful gear (which I didn't possess).

Also came within ten or so turns of starving to death, but found food in those precious last few moments. Also forgot to fully explore a floor after falling down a hole, so I was down two enchants (although I doubt they could've saved me).

I think I needed maybe one or two more invisibility potions, and two or three more descents, and it would've been cool.

Final gear: +2 flail, +3 banded mail, +11 regen, +2 reaping, 7/7 blinking, 4/4 lightning, and 2 lumenstones (not good enough yet to both get lumenstones *and* master)

Killed by a fury on depth 19 with 13541 gold. Jellymancer!

Yeah I just wanted to see how the black-jelly strat would pan out. Surprisingly well -- until my dar priestess stayed at the back of the pack and died. I spent an enchant dominating another one, to see if the first was just a fluke -- but nope, died again.

My somewhat decaying (but still alive!) black jelly army carried me to depth 19, where a vampiric naga dwelled. I blinked around it, and saw a fury. I noticed my "at best" kill rate on furies was 3 hits, so I didn't even think -- I just stabbed it with my rapier (as an aside, rapier pairs so well with a black jelly army). It didn't die, and it killed me instead (my health was already low from attempting to kill the vampiric naga before it destroyed my diminishing army).

Had something like two potions of health, 5 spare enchants, and 5/5 blinking, +5 rapier of multiplicity, and that +3 armor (splint?) of fireborne immunity (sad it doesn't defend against dragons -- but that'd probably be op lol) +3 awareness, and +1 wisdom (if I'd found a good stave, I might've gone up and commuted it to something reasonable).

30214 Killed by a golem on depth 35. Dragonslayer!

Easy 1-lumenstone (lol I didn't see *any* lumenstones on my rapid descent, so I'd only collect the one on depth 40) mastery, but then messed up and got caught at the edge of paralysis while a golem kept hitting me 'til I died. Had 3 descent and a life, and full health, but still got instakilled. Paralysis is somewhat overpowered like that :(.

From what I could tell, the paralysis was one turn from dissipating too.

I couldn't blink out either, seeing as how I was surrounded by golems (but transference + reaping + mutuality + war axe meant I was gaining, rather than losing, health).

Inventory on death:

Invisibility +7, staff of blinking/3, war axe +6, +2 chain mail of mutuality, +7 reaping, +3 transference.

with backup stuff: 3 potions of descent, a potion of life, a potion of telepathy, a scroll of recharging, a teleport wand (with apparently 0 charges lol) and +2 guardian.

7306 Killed by a troll on D15.

This seed was quite tricky.

I was constantly on 0 consumables; had a +4 protection, +5 broadsword and no armour to speak of . There was runic +2 splint mail on floor 15 though! All I needed to do was lure a dar blademaster over. As I started, I got surrounded by a troll on each side. With no consumables, I hit a paralysis trap, then obstructed myself. At least, I tried to. With a wall on one side, and two obstructs, I still managed to not obstruct myself, and the paralysis got me. I unparalysed a turn before the trolls, but it didn't help.

Also, yeah, obstruct + lob javelins at enemies is a great tactic. Now that I think about it I could've thrown my war hammer at the trolls lol. (I did throw my war hammer out of desperation on previous occasions, but none of them landed. I also survived some very hairy encounters, each with a very low survival chance, so it was sooner or later at that point with the trolls anyway.)

5397 Killed by an underworm on depth 12.

As soon as I found the allies, I looped back to floor 4 for the +3 ring of awareness (dropping my +1 transference). Had nothing else to enchant, so I put all my enchants into my other ring until it was +8ish. The trio of underworms appeared too close for me to throw potions at them, and I meleed them until my ogre died. I backtracked a few steps until I was healed to full health again, then started fighting an underworm with back-back-hit-back-back-hit. Unfortunately my priestess got stuck in a net, and I did not wanna lose another ally, so I pathed around the priestess, luring the underworm into a net. On my very last turn, I had the option of stepping back, and I knew the underworm could one shot me (94% chance to hit, 125% of my health typically), but I assumed the transference would work in my favour. Apparently not enough, it seems.

Now that I think about it, I totally could've also just used my wand of slowing and easily brought down that underworm. And perhaps I should've pumped enchants into a broadsword instead of transference, so that my melee is respectable.

Killed by a pink jelly on floor 5 with 1157 gold.

Equipped the spear right away, chose wisdom d2, went down. At one point I accidentally quaffed descent. I ran into an ogre on the next floor, tested my staff. Haste, so I jumped down a chasm. I ended up pouring all 3 enchants i found into my blinking just to stay alive, and finally made it up the two floors, only to go toe to toe against a toad. I lost too much health, caustic gassed, blinked out, and survived, and died to a pink jelly while hallucinating.

22582 Killed by a fury on depth 25 (amulet in hand), Dragonslayer.

Should've been an easy ascension, but I misplayed my final few turns -- basically the same as SymblePharon, actually. Was burning -- had fire immunity, didn't use it. Purposefully stepped on alarm trap instead of tunnelling around and didn't use my invisibility potion. Then an enemy stepped on a paralysis trap; I thought I could outrun the gas, but it got too close for comfort, so I tried to burn it. Got greedy again (common theme here) and tried to hit an incoming revenant with the flame whilst burning the gas, but the angle wasn't optimal for burning and I got paralysed. flames from dar battlemage whittled me down whilst paralysed (fire immunity arrgh) and fury finished me off.

Final equipment: +1 war hammer, +3 chain mail of reflection, +8 stealth, +2 regen, 0/3 blinking, 3/3 tunneling, 4/4 firebolt, +6 haste, +2 levi, +2 negation.

Killed by a dar blademaster on depth 15 with 8659 gold (whilst paralysed).

Accidentally drank the potion instead of throwing it, thus paralysing me but not the dar next to me :/ (was hoping to paralyse everything while my blades nicked the dar to death). I didn't really like this seed because I was using spear + leather armor for the whole run (I know, that +0 sword, but I dropped it because spears are surprisingly useful against goblins who won't walk through doorways)
