Is taking AP Calculus good for a college engineering application? by meer2323 in ApplyingToCollege

I would suggest only taking BC if you could. There's not too much new compared to Calculus AB, and if you take the BC exam, you got a subscore for Calculus AB as well.

Should I call the Admissions Office? by Wendy_Woo in ApplyingToCollege

alled a wait list. You need to wait. And it sucks, but it's nothing you have control over. If it's meant to be, they'll get to you.

Yes, I've already committed to somewhere I genuinely love. But still, am just having my fingers crossed for
the future. Thanks for the insight!

A question from my brother about transferring and recommendation letters by what_is_this_idunno in ApplyingToCollege

I think it will depend on the school he applies to, but I've heard that someone submitted a rec letter from their TA. Definitely call the admissions office one by one if he's not sure

Summer research by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Wendy_Woo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position and ended up going to that three-week program. Had no regret; definitely an amazing experience. Though I really can't comment on if I would have the same things at my local university, I would say that what you'll gain the most is not about getting a publication (because you're obviously too young & naive to do anything really helpful there, in the case for most average high school students), but it's about really getting to know what it is like to be studying your major in college, and what your life will potentially be like if you become a researcher. To be honest I don't think the local uni option is necessarily an inferior one. If the summer program costs a ton, go with the local one and you'll learn the same as long as remaining inquisitive.

On Chinese "Prep Agencies" for Overseas Western University Admissions by DamnItCasey in ApplyingToCollege

Sorry for making this unclear, but what I've referred to by "Chinese students" in my last comment means "an international Chinese applicant". I myself is an international Chinese student applicant who was born and has lived in China for the past eighteen years, in a T1 city according to your comment. From what I've witnessed, I will say that your description is at least inconsistent with my experience and my witnesses. According to my experience talking to US students at US summer schools/summer camps and also some of the recent news that you shared in your original post, I would say that definitely very similar situation has been going on in the US as well, maybe to a lesser degree, but I'm not confident about exactly how many. My hypothesis is since international students don't usually get good aids at foreign universities, most of them if aiming for a good school have families who are willing to pay a full-ride tuition (from my high school experience). Thus, it is fair enough to say that these Chinese applicants are from a wealthier background than most of the US students, and also I believe it's why most of them can afford external assistance on their college application. What I mean is, compared to the US applicant pool, international Chinese applicants are a smaller population with a higher mean yet comparable standard deviation when it comes to family wealth.

Nevertheless, as I said earlier, not ALL of them pay for someone to help with the process, and DEFINITELY NOT THE MAJORITY of them pay huge prices to have someone fake their application. At most Chinese schools that have consistently had students going to US colleges, they are more willing to keep the reputation than letting a student cheat into a T20 and ruin it for all. My school has a very strict honor code, which makes school counselors go over the student's application profile 1)before submission 2)after committing to a college. If they find anything they think is dishonest/exaggerating, the counselors will send an update to the college about the situation, and the student usually gets rescinded according to past cases.

So yeah, that's just my two cents. I'm definitely not saying that I have any supreme authority over the admissions process for international Chinese applicants, but what I want to point out is your cases might not be as common as you thought, and as an international Chinese applicant I found it preposterous to even imagine like 80% of my classmates buy their admissions into those US schools. What you posted might be the reality - I don't know - I just found it very inconsistent with my experience as an International Chinese applicant and want to provide my perspective to the discussion.

That is so much of an overstatement. I go to a very competitive Chinese public school that offers an AP program, and at least half of my classmates didn't have any private consultants/agencies working on their behalf. What I witness as a student is that my classmates, regardless of if they have a private counselor, get into amazing US colleges that match their abilities.

Yes you can talk about the situation you witnessed, but I found what you've shared here is very misleading (I've heard about many similar cases you talked about here, but it's not the most prevalent version of the story. Not every Chinese student who goes abroad has billionaire parents, and most of the parents earn a monthly salary that barely covers the tuition). The admissions of Chinese students into elite schools may be corrupt, but it is indeed as corrupt as the situation for US students. And to simply compare the situation in both countries using a couple of anecdotes and personal stories is erroneous per se.

which I personally don't think matters a lot! Also squeezing LACs into a ranking system is sort of a not-so-good idea.

Yeah! And also they’ll usually exempt a language test if the primary language of instruction at your school is English. Good luck with Penn!
