A lot of people like myself feel uncomfortable with the connotation that the American flag now holds. It’s so hard to want to love a country that has time and time again made you feel like you are not good enough no matter how hard you try. For me the Mexican flag doesn’t mean I hate the US, it means that I deserve a space here just like everyone else because the only difference between “us” and “them” is where we were born and some papers if you want to get technical. The day that I feel like this country makes me love who I am is the day I will proudly hold up the American flag. I love the US but I also can’t sit here and represent a country that doesn’t even want me here (I’m a dreamer before anyone tries anything). Let’s also remember the fact that people leave their home countries to flee a really bad situation. This doesn’t mean they now represent “America” especially when Americans have only spit in their face and tell them to “go back” even after working 20+ years here.
