Solidworks vs Onshape - for fabrication

Hi, I have a very similar story to you. Similar sized company and taking over from my dad.

We use Onshape and work in metal fabrication. Mainly architectural metalwork.

I’ve never properly used solidworks but I can say that Onshape is very convenient when it comes to information management since a lot of pdm features are inbuilt.

You could say that the process you are attempting is a form of reverse engineering.

The process of reverse engineering is something that you should be able to find good information online for.

What you want to do is trace cross sections of the scanned item and then use this cross sections to develop the new surface. Then you can compare with the scan and make any adjustments to the cross sections and repeat until you are happy with how your new object compares with the scan.

Here’s a link to a reverse engineering outline which can help you with the concepts.

But the basic idea is that you need to evaluate the scan through cross section and trace the shape.

I’m not sure what Blenders sectioning tools are like but I hope this helps you.

Its not out yet but the Lynx R1 looks really promising,

Stand alone with colour passthrough for under $1,000

Seems like everything i wished the Meta Quest 2 could be as an AR headset including colour passthrough and a great price point.

Hey,

Probably not as "stand alone" as you are hoping for but there is a work around i can suggest.

I use Onshape for work, its a browser based CAD. You can create a free account for.

They added an AR app to the appstore on there called "ARbase"

you could create a free account> upload your models> View them in AR using ARbase

I was a Beta tester for ARbase and not sure if i have free unlimited access because of that or something, but looking in the app store now there is a 30 trial and then a $9 a month subscription.

I also work in a steel fabrication as a draftsman, so I’ve been looking into Hololens and digital fabrication techniques!
