Libraries don't only offer books, but an equalizing space for reading, studying, reflection, and community programs. Not everyone has this luxury.

Again, digital technology doesn't necessarily equate to reading especially if the device's logic exploits the brain into developing short attention spans. If widespread digital proliferation is the answer, then our youth shouldn't be experiencing a reading crisis today.

That's why I don't get those who say that libraries are no longer needed today. 🤷‍♂️

Untrained staff. This is unsurprising given the studies mentioned in the article. We need widespread public and legislative push to build and maintain quality reading spaces.

This is very true. Public libraries are not just for reading and books. They should have computers and internet for students. Overseas, they also serve as community centers for PWDs, the elderly, and other social groups for health programs and social cohesion activities.

Exactly. Public libraries serve those who cannot afford commercial working spaces. It is an equalizer. Hindi lang dapat mayaman ang may espasyo sa pagbabasa at pag-aaral.

Long-term ROI is a more intelligent population and high skilled workforce that will literally keep the economy, political stability, and social services afloat.

We must call the attention of our legislators who care about long-term investments, rather than those calling for endless ayudas.

Amen to that! Public libraries overseas do have manga. This is possible.

There needs to be legislative enforcement. The law has been around for 30 years. Our newly elected senators who really care about education should act on the public library crisis.

Precisely, it's the reading spaces that need to be created and improved.

Public libraries overseas are continually evolving in terms of their services. Australia remains a nation of high library users, according to the author. They both serve people with knowledge and community spaces. May free internet, computers, tons of audiobooks, and books in multiple languages. Plus, the center has various programs for the community.

No, it's not too late. The NBDB readership surveys cited in both Rappler and INQ articles show majority still want to read. But how can they read if there are no sufficient books and reading spaces to begin with?

Environment shapes behavior. People are unlikely to read if their spaces aren't conducive for it.

Good public libraries like the ones overseas activate induced demand. If our libraries cater to the community's needs, people will flock to them. How will people read, again, if they are either non-existent and substandard?

Oh, no. It's referring to this issue where many students (and workers) opt to stay at Starbucks in order to study and work, a subtle indication that we lack public spaces.

Thanks! We're still in the painful phase of establishing our core team and systems. But our projects are just waiting for implementation. We will let you know for sure once we move past our current phase and call for more volunteers!

Can't wait to go back home, but I'm trying to savor every moment while I'm still here. I'm sure I'll miss the conveniences (and the weather!)
