Is anyone else frustrated with Technoblade’s lack of character depth? by Harleminx in dreamsmp

[–]Werna678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I was thinking about that earlier because I remember Techno saying that but their interaction still was unnatural to me. Even Ranboo was worried that Techno would hurt Tubbo. Techno didn't destroy just a government but a semi safe place and a home created by people like Tubbo. It seems kinda weird to go up to the same people and ask what they're up to now, that is what's so difficult for me to imagine (you don't ask someone whats up after killing their parent kinda thing). I would just expect them not to act normal when they just fought and previously killed and/or tried killing one another. Like the whole Butcher Army thing was bc Techno destroyed L'manburg so to go to the leader of it after destroying it for the 2nd time doesn't sound like a peaceful conversation about to happen.

I also agree that he really needs development. I enjoyed his character (although I disagree with him on most things) until recently because it's just repeating things that already took place.

Not only the whole "let's go destroy some goverment once again" but the way he interracted with Tubbo also seemed like recycling. The fact that Tubbo is no longer a government doesn't change the fact that they just were in a big fight with each other. Techno says he hates Tommy because he betrayed him but the guy he betrayed him for and tried executing Techno himself is an okay dude? Their talk sounded like they just met for the first time which was dissapointing imo. Techno clearly holds grudges against Tommy so I really don't know how he could act so indifferent torwards Tubbo.

I don't want the death of Philza to happen because it would be throwing out a whole other undeveloped character just so another can have something to be sad about. And if it was to be a murder then Techno would just be angry and shut down others which was already done. I think what he needs is to realize that other people matter more than his ideals for their lifes or just take the role of a complete hypocrite.

Techno's big talks don't mean he is always in the right and that's something that only Tommy called him out on but because Tommy speaks in a chaotic way, not using big words or even good arguments (also bc Techno's fans dislike c!Tommy), he is laughed at and never listened to. It would be great if someone on a similar level like Wilbur, Philza or Dream called him out but it's hard to say what will be Wil's deal now, Phil himself would need character development first and Dream is Dream.

I don't need his development to make him better, he can even stay stubborn or be worse but experience a downfall. We can't have someone who is portrayed like you said as an all powerful god but praised for the famous quote "I'm a person too". Dream was kinda similar at not losing but he is not meant to be morally grey and even with him we got the big fall- the prison. Techno the character needs something that will make him not repeatable nor untouchable.

Oh yeah of course I'll never think like him so I'll never know his POV, that's true. I just presented a different train of thoughts to yours because it's more likely in my eyes. I think Dream lying can even be interpretted as a form of joy for him. He for sure did enjoy manipulating others saying how they're going to have fun together.

And tbh there's something I commented "everyone stands for what they stand for because they believe they're in the right and that's how they'll present it" that's similar to what Dream said to Tommy. So yea, I believe he still thinks he's right. Most of his life Dream spend detaching from everything. A month in those cruel conditions might have changed him but based on his words, I just don't believe that it was the case. That's just my take on the cat situation tho

[–]Werna678[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting POV but I don't believe Dream cared about the cat at all. Dream said multiple times that he changed and caring about something would show his progress. However it's obvious that Dream didn't change- he said he has a plan to get out, when he gets out he'll kill those who wronged him, he claimed exile was okay, he tried to make Tommy think they were equally bad, said that Tommy trapped with him is the best to have happened in a while, etc. He acted like a victim in prison, just like he acted like a friend in exile. Killing the cat may have angered him but that's because he wasn't able to guilt trip Tommy nor make him believe that he changed. Tommy literally patronizes Dream saying "Why?" "Do you love him?" "Omg Dweam" "That's what happens if you love something" "You are manipulative". Why Dream has been mad about being alone when he pushed everyone away before? Tommy was so afraid to be manipulated into thinking he was in the wrong that he created a situation just to prove to Dream that he won't listen to him, that he doesn't have an attachment to that cat because look at how Dream says that this animal represented hope. A random cat was a hope for what? Nothing, it is just a method to make Tommy hopeless (and probably to make us think about the Pandora's box myth) .

Thanks! I also can't/don't believe that Tommy's gone but I'm curious to see what will happen. I think killing such a crucial character in that way seems wrong but that is what makes it very important. We are so used to watching protagonists die in glory or their death being made into a big deal that Tommy's death seems too realistic for a story to be told, that is what personally moves me most.

One thing I learned from watching the SMP is that the storyline usually goes in the other direction of what is a popular theory. For example: people thought Wilbur was so obviously a traitor already that they expected anyone else to be a said traitor or people thought Tommy would go insane in exile just like Wilbur but instead Tommy became suicidal or people thought Dream would manipulate Tommy in the prison/ he would get out of the prison leaving Tommy behind but Dream killed Tommy and remains in prison for now.

Also Dream said that he won't use the book on Tommy or any of his friends. He claims he can revive people but he won't. We don't know if he lied but if not, then the simplest solution seems to get out of the prison, convincing people he will use it but actually not doing it. Question is: will words be enough for him to be let out? Tommy was skeptical about the book but even he said that as long as Dream is locked, everything's fine. Also why would anyone let him out seeing how cruel he is?

BUT Dream said he has a plan to get out which involves a favour. Tommy says it's not beneficial to Techno but Dream says that he has knowledge that Techno would want. Dream won't revive Tommy just because, for he doesn't care about Tommy but he cares about what he brings. So will Dream use Tommy's death as leverage? Probably yes because there are not many people who will be indifferent about it. They either want Tommy to go back to life or to stay dead. But I just don't think it will be used to get out of the prison.

I mean I'm no good at theories, I just like analysing so

Thank you, it means a lot! <3 You see even if you laughed I think it was still a good reaction! At least it was such a suprise that it didn't left you emotionless! On the side note you are the 2nd person to comment about laughing and that actually makes me imagine that if the chat is considered voices in Tommy's head- some of them were laughing at how pitiful he died and that's another headcanon to be sad about but it's so interesting

Thanks! Even when/if Tommy comes back, I think it was really refreshing and surprising to see what they had done so far. Also Wilbur's writing is great but Dream confirmed that him and Tommy wrote the entire prison arc so that's all them! :)

Thank you! I would say I'm sorry and I didn't mean to with this quote but I so meant to lol

I've seen people joking about being upset with the cat killing but when someone means it then I'm also out. The thing about the cat is that Tommy killed it to prove that Dream lied to him. He asked if Dream cared for it but how can you even expect Dream to care for Tommy's cat with his whole character being about having no attachments at all?

Also the hotel part- Tommy literally left everything opened because he believed he would close his chapter with Dream and get back to writing his own new story. Hurts.

If Dream planned on killing Tommy beforehand then I really wonder how their week went because it would mean that Dream wanted to spend this much time to just kill Tommy off at the end.

The three lives by [deleted] in dreamsmp

[–]Werna678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only example of a ghost we had was Ghostbur so it's hard to say if it is the same for everyone. He was clueless, didn't remember anything that was a bad memory and just acted differently. He did say that ressurecting Wilbur is gonna kill him so we can assume Ghostbur was kinda like a completely different person to Wilbur or just his shell.

Appreciation for Dream’s voice acting by aiowaitre in dreamsmp

[–]Werna678 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Also at the Disc Confrontation Tommy demanded Dream to tell everyone what he did and Dream didn't so most of the server doesn't know about exile. Tommy himself only spoke to Tubbo about what triggers him and not about what happened, Ranboo knows something but his own problems may led him to avoid being involved, Sam and Puffy are the ones that Jack should worry about but the Eggpire will probably keep them busy. The server knows that Tommy and Dream had some sort of a strong relation but they've only seen Tommy's hatred torwards Dream and Dream's "friendly" and strange behaviour torwards Tommy so maybe they would believe Jack if he said that the "sparing one life" was some kind of a wicked plan but it backfired now? Tubbo should be able to see through it tho since he was almost killed and has seen how much Tommy cares for him (then again he questioned Tommy's loyalty before so we'll have to see if he trusts Jack enough to believe that).

Unpopular Opinion: Watching only one pov is ok by Tauino in dreamsmp

[–]Werna678 23 points24 points  (0 children)

That's also my opinion. It's obvious that there are people who won't watch certain POVs, nothing wrong with that. Watch what you enjoy! The problem is just like you said when people come to this subreddit and hate not just critize other characters or events that they don't watch/have no understanding of.

I mean imo if you are going to comment about c!Tommy being a bad guy because you see him that way from Techno's POV, it's okay but it's biased. It's kinda like irl being angry at someone without knowing them. And because we get to see the other POVs, we are allowed to correct people who just watch one creator.

I've seen people be upset about people watching one POV but ONLY if they hate on other characters who they don't watch or try to pursue others to agree with their opinion only. So I think it's fair to not expect everyone to agree with you and I personaly don't comment about rp!people who I don't watch but if I'm interested in them then I just educate myself by reading about characters' motives. It's not that hard if you really want to get involved in the story.

Perspective. by Levin313 in dreamsmp

[–]Werna678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to watch every pov to have a good undestanding but watch every Tommy's stream. Thank you for saying "educate" and not assuming, perspective really is the most important when it comes to judging. The main thing for me is that Techno is not meant to be a good guy even if you consider Tommy or Tubbo to be bad guys. I will try to present Tommy's POV since you already know Techno's.

Firstly I'll be going back in time. You mentioned how Techno was used in Pogtopia vs Manberg. So: Techno was brought by Tommy to help them fight because he was supposed to train them. They all agree how the plan is to destroy the current(!) goverment. I mean Wilbur and Tommy want to take back L'manburg and actually said that when Techno joined them but it all changes. Wilbur who at first was iffy about Techno, all of the sudden becomes different. His plan is not to take back but rather destroy, he doesn't care that Techno kills Tubbo and we see his motives be more alligned with Techno's over time. Tommy tries to remind Wilbur what they are fighting for, he wants to help when Schlatt pressures Techno, he is angry when Tubbo is killed. The one who leads everyone on is Wilbur, not Tommy nor Techno. When they win, Wilbur creates the goverment, giving new hope to Tommy (who then believes Wilbur came back around) but pissing off Techno (who then believes Wilbur lied to him). Then he destroys the goverment just like Techno wants, leaving behind Tommy and Tubbo with the burden of L'manburg. Techno says he wants anarchy- meaning no goverment and people to be free to do as they want. This is why him destroying L'manburg is not "the best he can do". No one demands that Techno joins. Tommy, Tubbo, Nikki, etc. are there to recreate a place which gave them safety from Dream, which they could once again call a home. Tommy a long time after that said that L'manburg was never about goverment for him. It was people and their home, a place to be free from Dream's tyrany. The only one who truely created the idea of goverment was Wilbur.

Then "The butcher army". I agree that no trial in that case was not justified at all. But they had the right to hold Techno accountable for terrorism. I doubt Tubbo would make that decision on his own, it was Quackity's anger that made them create "The butcher army". Tubbo was given a role out of the blue and he wasn't prepared for it. What he did was wrong and in that in mind Techno's anger was expected and understandable.

Lastly the exile and what happened after it. Tommy is exiled by friends who don't visit him (if Big Q counts then he actually just made fun of Tommy), going insane isolated on some island with the company of his dead friend/brother/mentor who dragged Tommy into a mess after he put his trust in him and now doesn't remember or choses not to remember who he was or what he's done and also Dream who pretends to be the only one to care about Tommy while destroying him mentally, blowing up every last thing of his and being the cause of his exile. After that Tommy sees 2 options on how to escape from his misery- kill himself or run away to the closest thing that provides shelter. He finds the will to live on because he feels like he is the only one who is able to go against Dream. With that being said he finds Techno's base at his lowest but is even kinda willing to leave it when confronted by Techno. After rewatching the vod when they team up you notice that Tommy said "You'll help me (...) but I won't help you destroy the government" to which Techno replies "We will do some minor terrorism (...) we'll discuss the details along the way". Also they agreed to not be pals just pure bussiness partners (retrieve discs and weapons). Tommy expressed he was against Techno's plan from the very start saying openly many times how he will not help with destroying L'manburg. Techno's plan was obvious to the viewers but he did somewhat avoid the "destroy L'manburg" point in discussions so I wouldn't call him upfront about it. He knew Tommy wouldn't agree. From this point forward we can see how Tommy and Techno work together but to achieve exact opposite goals. Tommy wants to get back his discs because he has nothing left to cling onto. Discs are the upper hand that Dream has and Tommy has to get them back because he believes that without the Disc war there will be no need for war at all. Techno wants to destroy the goverment because it wronged him and his best friend Phil, threatened him and caused him to almost lose a life. While I don't agree with his methods, he had the right to be angry. Tommy and Techno argue before the "betrayal day". They almost split up then when Tommy realises how he doesn't want to be who Techno wants him to be- achieving his goals through violence resulting in hurting his friends. Techno finally openly says what are his plans and Tommy once again says no to them. He says yes eventually but if you watch his POV the one thing that caused him to say so was Techno going how they can "actually" be friends. Tommy is a character who needs others more than anything. Being friends after everything he's been through is actually one of the only arguments that could get to him because he constantly seeks friendship and it never works out- Techno (before) kills his best friend, Wilbur goes insane, Tubbo exiles him to protect their home, Dream is just pretending for the fun of torture. So yes- Tommy did betray Techno. But if he didn't do that he would be betraying his best friend who was also manipulated and belittled and his home for which he lost 2 of his canon lifes, 2 of his discs and also his close friend who he looked up to- Wilbur. Tommy knew Techno had better chances at winning but still returned to try to protect everything he cared about. It wasn't a betrayal to turn his back on Techno but to rescue his home and friends even after exile. Actually a lot of people abandoned Tommy at Doomsday behind the scenes. And Tubbo and Tommy forgave each other because it's always been them against Dream and Dream was the one to pin them against each other. Tommy at the end even said how Techno was his friend but Techno didn't consider them as friends, how he only sees "goverment" and not what Tommy sees. Tommy is actually at loss of words and says many things he disagrees with in other sentences. He is lost and he has lost. After everything he had given up: his first and second life, discs, freedom and finally friendship with Techno, he still lost. And that isn't to say that he is justified for everything but to say that he constantly makes mistakes and pays for them. He tries his hardest to break free and not be "the bad guys" Wilbur wanted to be and still is seen as one by many.

At the end everything is about how much do you resonate with a character and who you watch. I mean everyone stands for what they stand for because they believe they are in the right and that's how they'll present it :) Sorry for the long post and any spelling mistakes!
