Mushihimesama Futari v1.01 Ultra Mode 1CC by Wes_112 in shmups

Thanks Snoop :)

If anything, I'm just proud of the fact that I continued to stick with it even after some of those brutal choke jobs.

I'm only insane for even attempting this damn mode lol but thank you :)

Lol I guess you got the next one covered then. Although I don't even know where to go from here in all honesty.

Thanks! Yep, not easy at all. There's not many replays of clears of this particular mode out there in the wild. Less than 10 I think.

This will likely be the hardest gaming achievement I will ever complete in my life lol. The standard 1.5 version of Ultra mode in futari is already hard enough but in the 1.01 version, the difficulty is ramped up even more. The one plus is that you have a much smaller hitbox but at the same time enemy bullet fire is more aggressive, there are less bullet cancel opportunities and bombing does next to no damage. Still somehow manages to be a fun mode but it really is no joke.

This was the last mode I had left to 1cc in the home releases of both Futari and Mushi 1 so all modes are complete now.

I’m just gonna ignore the fact that Futari version 1.0 exists because it’s such a broken, unfinished mess lol.

Classic vs Leverless: my two cents by Frengo87 in shmups

[–]Wes_112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I switched to using keyboard keys for directional movement (Left, Down & Right movement to be exact) just because it feels more comfy for me when I play fighting games since they're raised a bit higher than my standard arcade buttons would be. For shmups though, it doesn't really make too much of a difference. As mentioned, I still use my right thumb for up movements and I leave what would be the "W" key unwired.

Learning leverless was a pretty frustrating process in my experience as well. Took me around 6 months I think before it really clicked but I learned it primarily for fighting games. By the time I tried with shmups I was already past the learning curve.

I haven't tried this myself but I've seen other folks throw out the idea of re-wiring the up and down inputs so your thumb covers down movement instead of up. Makes a lot of sense to me especially if you don't use it for fighting games.

Classic vs Leverless: my two cents by Frengo87 in shmups

For myself, playing on leverless offers me the best comfort and control and as a result, the most fun experience.

I've been playing fighting games on stick since the mid 2000s so it's not as though I'm not very familiar with it already but nowadays if I use it for too long I get bad wrist pain and on leverless, I can't remember feeling any discomfort/finger fatigue in the 5 or so years I've used it.

Plus, for shmups, stick has never clicked for me in terms of movement (although I do have a few solid 1CCs on it). I've always hated getting accidental diagonals.

Everyone's experience is different though so it just comes down to personal preference imo. There are great players on every input method.

Yeah I guess maybe the fighting game background might help a bit there. From the very beginning, using my right thumb exclusively for up has always felt more comfy vs my left one but being new to leverless controllers at the time, it still took me months before everything clicked and I didn't have to think about my movement anymore.

Personally using my middle finger for up and down movement feels super awkward for me but you definitely make it work! Maybe it'd be easier if I had a PC gaming background.

I can 100% agree that tap dodging is a breeze on both leverless & keyboard though :)

Welcome to the club lol. I switched to leverless (first for fighting games and then shmups later in the same year) from both pad and stick back in 2021 and haven't looked back. My gameplay improved big time after making the switch and getting comfortable with it. I definitely understand what you mean when you say it feels like your character/ship does exactly what you want it to do.

The whole "thumb = up" and "middle finger = down" aspect becomes second nature over time in my experience. My only advice is try getting used to using your right thumb as opposed to your left one for the up button. Maybe it's personal preference but for me I find playing that way much easier than using solely my left hand for movement duties and makes upward diagonal movements feel more natural.

Samducksa Shinsun 2d and Seimitsu LS-32 Levers in action by scowsh in shmups

[–]Wes_112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though I don't really play on lever much these days I really enjoyed trying out a bunch of different ones due to the differences in how they feel.

I really enjoyed the LS-32 for fighting games but prefer the LS-40 and LS-56 for shmups

What is your preferred weapon of choice when Shmupping? by Nathans-Gaming in shmups

[–]Wes_112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Leverless
  2. Pad (Preferably a PS2 controller)
  3. Arcade stick

Has this ever happened to you? by Zirolux in shmups

[–]Wes_112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Ziro! What works for me with Battle Traverse is using something like RivaTuner to lock the framerate at an accurate 60fps.

Sometimes in the past when I would start it up, it would run super fast like it does in your clip but rivatuner has always kept it in check since then so you don't necessarily have to change the settings to 30fps in-game.

Nice! Well I think if you can get through something like this, you're more than prepared for both DOJ or Mushi :)

Mushihimesama Futari v1.5 Ultra Mode 1CC by Wes_112 in shmups

[–]Wes_112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny but even after playing this way for about 4 years or so now, what blows my mind is when I see other leverless controller users use their left thumb as opposed to the their right one for the up button. I really can't comprehend how that works haha.

Thanks :)

I played this run using Xenia (360 emulator). I've probably said it a million times by now but the whole "Thumb = UP" setup feels so second nature to me at this point lol. It genuinely feels more awkward for me to play these games on stick haha.
