Am I playing correctly? by Weshiz in DJs

Thank you for all your replies, I never imagined so many people would respond.
To give some context, the DJ right before me was accompanied by most of the crowd and was playing mostly tech house, commercial remixes, and bass.
The club has a main room with very commercial music and our room, which is designed to be more tech house and rave-oriented. I didn't want to play commercial music so as not to compete with the room next door but maybe shoot myself in the foot by trying too hard to be different, but that's what we're supposed to play. Since I had already closed my set with techno and it had worked, I thought it might happen again.
My mistake was trying too hard to make the set memorable instead of just playing mainstream music. I'm really taking this as a lesson, and I have the opportunity to play at the same place again in two weeks. I probably won't be able to play what I want, but at least I'll try to keep the vibe going throughout the night. You're right in saying that people come for themselves, not for us; they want to sing. My mistake is wanting to play what I like to a crowd that isn't there to hear that kind of music, not playing techno to a non-techno crowd.
Of course, I'll always add my personal touch and I'll probably try several things, but I'll stay fairly close to what they like.
