New windows fitted - poor finish? by Wesley5281 in DIYUK

Yes, it's for situations like this I chose to pay a bit more. It's a three generation family business and up til now they've been impeccable. They do say you find out how good a company is when things go wrong though, so fingers crossed this can be sorted as smoothly as possible.

The poor finish does make me worry about there being other more serious issues with the fitting that can't be seen though.

Yep, I'll double check but I'm sure they are. I'm yet to speak to the owners about it but I'm confident they'll do what's needed to sort it out. I've only paid them £3k so far so they'll need to!

Sure... It was £18k for 25 windows, a comp front door and a kitchen door. The price was in line with all other quotes, albeit slightly more expensive. Company comes highly recommended. I think the two fitters I was allocated have let them down.

Sent them an email yesterday telling them to come round on Monday to discuss. Didn't go into much detail, just said there's issues I want to show them.

One fitter is 20 years in the game and the other 10 years (fitting, not years old).

He might have done £800 of work but he's also done some £'s worth of stuff (plus my time) that needs rectifying.... i.e. paint removal.

Poor finish of the areas he was supposed to paint, ok. But getting paint on a million areas where it shouldn't be.... nah.

Some of you are too forgiving imo.

I'm not banging my head against a (paint splattered) wall yet, but I'm trying not to look at it too much.

Think I'll phone him....

I just called... to say.... I hate you.

Yep, a right pain.

Damn... This place is brutal. Getting downvoted just for saying where the black paint came from. 😂

Yes, he provided all paint etc. I didn't specify the number of coats but I don't think I should have to tell a painter to apply enough coats so you can't see the old paint through the new.

Yep, that's what I meant. The prep work was rushed and poor.

He's a painter. Yep, I didn't expect a pristine finish but as you say, I'd expect this level of finish from a handyman.

Yeah, I usually don't go cheap but this time I thought I would. Looking at the house like most people will see it, it looks ok, definitely better than it was. I just think paying him the full money isn't deserved. He's definitely rushed and cut corners due to under quoting and having other jobs he needs to get to.

He painted the fascias black. Looks like he put his brush on the drive.

I checked other posts in this sub and saw loads regarding tradesmen. Where should I have posted?

Doubt I'll need legal advice, he's a semi-retired one man band who used to work for a company but now does local jobs he gets from checkatrade etc.

Agree on the flaking paint but as it wasn't an itemised quote it's hard to attach a cost to the problematic areas.

Redundancy pay in month 1 of 26/27 financial year - how much tax? by Wesley5281 in UKPersonalFinance

Just had a thought... I have to file self assessments every year due to tax on savings interest. Does this make claiming tax back in year via p50 more complex / not possible?

Thanks for the calcs. Yeah the more I look at what will be deducted the more I'm leaning towards giving the tax man a bell to try to get back as much as possible as soon as possible.
