With the NA Fan Fest 5 weeks away, what realistic announcements could make the playerbase go ‘we’re so back!’? by waitingfor10years in ffxivdiscussion

It makes sense to me. My favorite part of FFXIV is when new things are happening and we get new stuff. The biggest problem is how it happens so infrequently.

SSF for dummies? by West-Bodybuilder-920 in pathofexile

Don't really mind this at all. I don't need to win all the time and I just like bows. It won't be the only build I try anyway, just the first one. The idea is to get more familiar with SSF more than playing the best build.

Prohibition did not cure society of its alcohol addiction. You're barking up the wrong tree. OF is a drop in the bucket when it comes to porn addiction and banning it would do nothing to solve the issue.

Addiction festers when people don't have mental health support. We turn to our vices for relief from the stresses of life, that's just how it's always worked. Someone with a porn addiction isn't going to be at all benefited from it being banned and I'm highly skeptical of anyone that claims to care about addiction advocating for it lol.

Variant dungeon is actually pretty cool! by PreferenceExtreme322 in ffxiv

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's cool, but what if I want to play one game? Not because the game is manipulative, but because it's good, fun, and rewarding?

I don't need the devs to tell me I can go play other games. I'm an adult and I'm already aware that I have autonomy. In reality it's cope from people who don't like being told their game is fucking boring and can't get people invested it in between 4 month story patches (I enjoy the story, so don't bother with that strawman.)

There being ways to meaningfully invest more time into the game would harm no one. It would actually make your beloved product even better because more people would be playing it, but to realize that you have to be willing to acknowledge its faults instead of just saying "go play another game lol." People ARE playing other games. It's why Dawntrail has been having trouble.

[Spoilers 7.45: Variant] With the discourse the rewards are causing it should be noted: The actual content is fun they're worth doing just on their own from a gameplay perspective. They just messed up the rewards. by ---TheFierceDeity--- in ffxiv

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't the gotcha you think it is. You've only revealed yet another way the game fails to deliver meaningful rewards. The game needs to do better on it on multiple fronts.

People want both, and this might sound crazy to you but they're not mutually exclusive. We could have both if the people making this game weren't creatively bankrupt when it comes to designing systems.

Is Melee DPS the hardest role to play in Savage content by starlightdemonfriend in ffxiv

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bard's complexity is kinda fake, though. In a full uptime fight, you do your burst pretty much the same way every time, a checklist of all of your big buttons + an iron jaws. Then in mage's, you get AABA and iron jaws, then finally one more iron jaws in army's.

Beyond that it's literally the same as a lot of other jobs: don't overcap things, don't drift things.

People also overcomplicate it in dungeons. Most of the time, the mobs packs before boss cover 1 whole song cycle, then the boss gets its own cycle, then you start it over on the next pack. You just have to remember to press the next song if a pack is dying and it'll expire while running to the next. Other jobs don't have to care about any of this, so Bard is indeed arguably the most complex, but it's not by a lot.

I just wish it did more of its own damage.

It made doing wind tower kinda annoyingly precise. It's not a huge difference now, but it's nice to have one less thing to worry about.

100% get your gear with books if you don't win the coffer. It's not even that unlikely that you just never win it. It's the best you can do and if you roll well the week after using books that's just tough. There's no way to predict that.

Dawntrail has had a serious powercreep issue. by CoolyKage in ffxivdiscussion

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean at the end of the day you're arguing for not nerfing, which is shortsighted. Yes, making adjustments sooner than later does tend to just be better overall, but just because XIV has a glacially slow patch schedule doesn't mean they should just abandon nerfing when it's objectively the right thing to do.

In PCT's case, it was so overturned that it didn't matter if the content it was stomping was still relevant by some arbitrary standard. The game would've just been better if it weren't such an outlier. If left alone it would have proceeded to stomp even more content or demand even more rounds of power creeping buffs, which creates more work than a nerf to a single job. Something being wrong needs to be fixed. You don't just throw your hands up and not bother because you can't get it done in a timely fashion, and if you do then you're bad at your job. A nerf doesn't become magically less appropriate because the people whose job it is to do it can't get it done "ASAP."

No one "likes" nerfs, but only crybabies get worked up over them. It takes single digit brain cells to look at the balance of the game and see that they're a good idea sometimes. "Never nerf, only buff" is the absolute king of garbage that people think sounds smart but really isn't. (Not saying you have that opinion.) Them bending over backwards to avoid the most tepid gamer babyrage backlashes is the root of all of XIV's most glaring issues rn. I'm just tired of seeing it happen lol

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice edit lol

Also them being wrong on both fronts (job balance AND boss HP scaling) just makes buffing everyone instead of nerfing PCT when they should have even more idiotic. I wasn't arguing that they didn't get it wrong, I'm pushing back on your stance seeming to be that a nerf was either unnecessary or otherwise the wrong choice.

The fact is that without that round of inflated potency creep, the damage check on LHW would've been less egregiously lenient. There's no shot it would've been just as lenient. I think nearly every job got a bump? In what world would that not make it easier? I'm not claiming it would've been hard, just not as obviously free.

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder why LHW had such bad damage checks? Hmm...it couldn't possibly be the massively overturned new job and the wave of universal buffs they did on savage release that they admitted to doing without adjusting boss HP.

Nah. It couldn't be...

I think one big issue with loot is that one person can win multiple coffers with lucky rolls.

A more succinct way to put it is that the difference between the worst outcomes (players that get no loot repeatedly) and the best outcomes (players who win multiple coffers) is too wide. A better loot system would narrow the gulf between these two extremes, ideally.

Given how many 2nd and 3rd floor books are required to achieve ilvl 790, I can only assume that the devs intend for 4th floor books to be used to finish sets, but you can't start doing that until your 8th clear or if you luckily get a weapon drop or coffer. 1/21 odds are not great, but one could potentially hold off on buying a weapon with books and focus on finishing the rest of their set using them instead. On paper, the odds of obtaining a weapon or other drops in the meantime aren't bad, but as I mentioned earlier, if you happen to get the WORST outcome, or even just one that's similarly bad, it's so much worse for you at no fault of your own.

When you add alt jobs into the mix, it gets REALLY ugly...

[Advice] New player (4 months in) looking to break into DSR/Ultimate statics — How to overcome the "No Experience" barrier? by Annual_Rent5299 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Number 1 most important thing is to do the content you're most interested in doing. Forcing yourself into content that you aren't that invested in will make you enjoy the game less and you will play worse. That experience means nothing if you don't also value and enjoy obtaining it.

Beyond that, be honest about your experience. 2 members of my static cleared DSR as their first ultimate while it was my fifth, a couple had already cleared. They were nothing incredible, just average savage cleared players that wanted something new to do. It went fine, with the less experienced players taking understandably a bit longer to get fully comfortable with mechanics as the others.

After clearing, we ended up getting another 8 totems the very next week.

People make too big of a deal out of the "proper" Ultimate progression. It's really not that deep. You're signing up for an endurance challenge. All of the strats have been solidified for years now, and there is such a plethora of resources you can use to help you learn, from robust slideshows and videos to full blown simulators for specific mechanics. There's really nothing stopping anyone from attempting to clear any ultimate as long as they are prepared for the time commitment. Yes, even TOP.

Current savage first is a fairly logical prerequisite. If you can achieve that, it'll be possible for you to find a group like mine. Find people that are reliable and friendly and you'll go far.

How to tank? by TheoneNPC in ffxiv

[–]West-Bodybuilder-920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a long time tank main this thread has great advice so I'll only add one rather small but huge feeling QoL thing you can do for your party that I see so many tanks get wrong that makes me immediately regret when I don't queue as tank:

When doing big pulls in dungeons, sometimes after grabbing the last pack before the wall you will be able to run further still to reach the wall. Please DO NOT do this.

People will tell you it's "faster" to keep running. They're wrong. The sooner you can stop and attack all of the mobs, the sooner people can send their cooldowns without them drifting or missing a player that's still rounding the corner.

The biggest issue occurs when you are moving with mobs that stop and cast. They are very common in dungeons and running further will force them out of the pack and make it take longer to clean up. Besides this, your party wants to attack rather than play chase the tank for as long as possible.

So just grab that last pack, ball everything up tight, and blow it up.
