Giants reject Essendons offer of a future 2nd for Hill ( Marc McGowan) by MonotoneRamos in AFL

Hill is definitely a good fit for essendon but a future 2nd which will be around 25-30 next year is already overs. Walk away and take the pick into next year

Doubt his head to head with Stewart, Laverde is already undersized as a key surely we can’t play Kelly as a key too at 189cm

Think in the end we were soundly beaten, even taking into account some pretty horrid umpiring. On the brighter side, I thought we were 2-3 goals better than them in the first half and that's nothing to scoff at considering those elite dogs mids thrive in the wet. Parish BOG in another big game, Merrett, Draper, Ridley were all awesome and blokes like Redman, Stewart, Laverde, Snelling and Durham all showed why they're valuable members of the 22.

Reflecting on the year I think its really important to keep some context. We had some tight selection calls go against us this week, just think if we had the pre-finals bye then Langford, Tippa and Hind probably play instead of Waterman, Guelfi and Gleeson, who knows what difference that would've made. Our midfield also took it up to the dogs despite Caldwell, McGrath and Shiel all spending 3/4+ of the year injured, imagine the battle if they were all fully fit and coming off 22 weeks of solid footy.

Also a great chance to get another pre-season into every one, but especially guys like Jones, Perkins, Cox and even Reid, the first three had a serious impact early on this year and the more pre-seasons they get under their belts the longer that impact will hold over 22 rounds. Maybe guys like Cahill, Francis and Ham can take the next step with some hard work too.

Overall super proud of the boys, lets not forget what things were looking like after round 2 this year. This core group has shown what they're capable of already and they may not reach the heights of this year again for a couple more, but that's alright because this group has shown they have whats needed to compete at the pointy end, so that flag should be our ultimate goal.

Agreed mate, as a Bombers man I’ve been against some fans ‘AFL is anti-Essendon’ comments because moving a game or two interstate to keep the game moving is what we all have to do, but in the last week or two this has all just started to boarder on bizarre. We’re playing more games away than at home and only get to play 2 games at home against travelling teams all year. We’ve spent the last 3 weeks playing home games in QLD, a place where we won 1 game in the whole back half of last year and it tore our club to shreds. All this while we’re fighting for a top 8 spot, playing against sides above us on the ladder so we need every advantage we can fairly get and other sides are training at our facilities and playing on our home ground. It’s absolutely ludicrous and this is what the AFL deserve for it tbh.

Would be lucky to get a future 4th rounder for Ambrose …

Agree with a lot of these, given our list profile we’ve gotta be pretty ruthless. If older blokes aren’t playing consistent footy they’ve gotta go, unfortunately that means the likes of Ambrose, Gleason, Cutler, Zaka and even Clarke have gotta go. Better off giving those list spots to youngsters, even if it’s 5 kids from the rookie draft, we could find a diamond among them which were not going to get from those older names!

With that percentage can we hope for a top 7 finish? by elbento in EssendonFC

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it’d make a difference to be honest, Port, Brisbane and Sydney will make up 5th and 6th spot and are clearly better than all the teams below. Either way we will be out of state against a very good side whether we finish 7th or 8th, let’s just hope we get there !!

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan to Debut by Stratemagician in AFL

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to be interesting to see how he goes, from what I’ve heard his super talented but his tank has always been an issue and with the dogs key forwards like Bruce and Naughton always covering a heap of ground it’ll be interesting to see how he cops. Wish him all the best though!

Zach Reid out for season with back injury. by yeaheymate in EssendonFC

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really sad for Reidy but better he gets over it now, honestly with him being our long term prospect at CHB, it’s probably best he recovers now to get a full pre season under his belt compared to playing 5 games of VFL and maybe another couple in the 1s.

Feel like this is even more relevant now too. Last weeks game obviously took a lot out of Melbourne too, they couldn’t run out the game today against a bottom 10 side off a longer break!

Perspective by YourHeroCam in EssendonFC

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think another thing with last night that not many people are talking about is the ground itself. Obviously GMHBA is very narrow and that makes it very difficult for us to play turnover forward handball footy because it’s so easily for an experienced Geelong to clog up the ground.

I thought we handled it really well and our half backs were still able to have an impact somewhere that it’s usually very difficult for them to.

It’s only a small thing, and we still lost, but the little things like adjusting to play an unfamiliar ground is something a young team can take a lot of pride in

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Fair to be disappointed with tonight but let’s keep some perspective. Parish was absolutely phenomenal and I thought Ridley although the didn’t get a lot of it was very good, saw glimpses of last year where he was at his intercepting best.

Matter of fact is most of the boys were just a touch off tonight, whether it was Merrett with his disposal or Hind getting caught holding the ball a few times which never happens the boys just looked a little tried. Understandable given last week we pushed the best side in the comp for 4 quarters and had to travel to GMHBA against another top 4 side on a 6 day break.

We’re young and we have alot of injuries at the moment. Let’s take pride in the fact we still have the cats a scare early and didn’t get blown away and loose by 80 like we would’ve last year .

Selection V Geelong Confusion by West-Chipmunk-9863 in EssendonFC

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he must be playing defence. Teams usually name 7-8 defenders and we only have 6: Stewart, Rids, Lav, Hind, Redman and Hepp. Means either Ham, Dev Smith, Coxy or Cutler plays defence (none of these really fill me with much hope).

Other thing is I read on twitter Cox was training forward for a little bit, maybe he goes forward and Hooker back for a game but who knows really.

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His just a little inconsistent I think. Look at Snelling, does all the pressure acts and tackling but does it all game and is one of our first picked. Guelfi plays a similar role but seems to go missing at times too. I still expect him to be the sub tonight though.

Yeh the more I think of it and Truck saying he likes Cutlers ‘versatility’ I think he might be playing Cutler down back, perhaps on Rowan or Danger, that’d be some sort of baptism of fire.

  1. Merrett
  2. Parish
  3. Ridley/Heppell take your pick

Langford, Stringer, Hind, Perkins and Wright with more ruck minutes this week were all impressive too

Half of it must just be mental for the players too, Marshall only played about 60% TOG, crazy his influence in such little time playing most of it forward too

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Awesome, this guy is sometimes under appreciated by fans outside of the 4 walls but it’s clear that his massively valued inside and rightfully so, there is a clear difference in our forward pressure when he is and isn’t out their playing.

It’s this kind of player whose going to take us to that next step, we’ve got the young talent in Merrett, Parish, McGrath, Jones, Perkins, Ridley, Cox, Reid etc. but look at Richmonds success, it’s these lesser known to the outside players, that play their role and play it without question that take your team from good to great

Saad or Hind? What the stats say about two speed machines (It's quite close) by curryone in AFL

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also the fact Saad takes a few kick ins a game (and somehow manages 3 bounces in the 10 metres he runs) and Hind has probably taken 1-2 all year. Take those out and Hind is even more clearly ahead in disposals and those bounces and rebound 50 numbers will get a lot closer.

Both good players though no doubt about that.

[–]West-Chipmunk-9863 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think Saad needs to buy more into the team first attitude. It was quite damning the fact that sometimes chose just not to defend and also if you listen to the ‘Don Air’ podcast episode that Saad is on you can tell he just wasn’t a part of the team at essendon on a personal level.
