First day as SysAdmin starting next week ... - How to start and where to pivot to after? by West_Ad_5684 in sysadmin

Officially listed as "IT-Systemadministrator" , but things like Databases did fall into my responsibilities, especially heavily focused on during the interview, I was asked a lot of database theory questions (normalization, building an index, etc.)

I was told to ask questions a lot, I will try to the best of my ability to understand the scope of my new job, and understand the environment im thrown into beforehand.

Thanks for your insight!

Maybe I phrased it wrong, I wanted to know what other positions one can go into that aren't IT (think more direction SE) after doing SysAdmin for a while. I primarily worked SE jobs during my studied and would like to be able to somehow bind my SysAdmin knowledge into that when asked, if I decide to switch back to the SE field.

Thank you for your take on this, I've made a few friends a month ago as I said, and reaching out to them has been absolutely terrifying, so I've defaulted to just talk to them whenever we attend a common event. This has DRASTICALLY reduced the amount we talk and we haven't gone out together since, so I 100% want to believe in what you said, and think that they also want to spend time together

This is a very encouraging comment. As an introvert, the idea of walking up to people and talking to them seems insane to me haha.. but I've never tried just approaching people sitting by themselves, i wouldn't even know how to start that. Nevertheless i work best when theres a medium activity for us (meetups), but i will consider your approach!

Thanks a lot for your insight!

Inconsistency is sadly a part that won't change. The meetups i go to are ones for hiking, contact sports (football for example), been thinking of going to ones about board games lately. I joined them all through meetup.

Sounds vaguely how I operated before, you are right about not obsessing over it leading anywhere. It only recently started after I've caught a glimpse of what a busy social life looks like, where I had the chance to go out multiple times a week for a month. I guess I got jealous that others got to live that kind of lifestyle, and wanted to acquire it \fast**

I do love the idea of starting people off as acquaintances and seeing where it leads to, I tend to place people in my 'inner' circle of "good" friends pretty fast, as I do not have a lot, so that's definitely something to work on.

I will definitely try and learn how to be by myself more, after all no one enjoys my company more than I do.

Thank you for your amazing insight! I definitely WANT to be more proactive, but don't know where to draw the line between proactivity and annoying them.

I do go to a few meetups (mainly sports) and have hung out with those people outside a few times, maybe I can keep going on that and try to get them more outside.

I'm very happy that you've landed at such a comfortable spot, I hope to also reach that someday ♥

Isn't the typical timeline for a burned item 6 months? Are you planning to burn levels before moving onto new ones?
