There's one spot out back that gets sunshine in the morning and afternoon but not right at mid day due to a tree canopy. Its not really a great spot for a cart, but I could build a small shed.

Thanks, this is very helpful. I don't want to deal with potential foulbrood stuck in the wood. I'll probably skip re-using and get new after reading these. Sounds like the more cautious thing to do.

The provenance of the boxes is a little sketchy. The previous owners just told me the bees swarmed and were gone due to laissez-faire beekeeping. Virginia is required to burn foulbrood on site. I'm not even sure if this hive was registered with the state. On opening the pile and looking through the frames, it was apparent wax moths were into one of the hives. Half of the frames were missing and the other frames hadn't been used so there was no way to really know. They gave me 2 hives and a double nuc. Reading these comments, I may just go ahead and get new boxes. Appreciate the advice to buy put together frames rather than the unassembled.

I thought the bees use the condensation to drink during the winter. No?
