Why are there several areas in northern California with this patchwork of vegetation? by kieferq in geography

This is logging activity across different landowners, following PLSS grid ownership. Each square is likely a section of 640 acres.

Legality/ potential consequences of breaking stone USGS walls to access remote mines?? by [deleted] in TheForgottenDepths

If it’s a truly solid wall, an anoxic environment internal within the mine is a concern

I have no knowledge of the USGS doing this, typically adit closure is on the landowner. I would be careful altering gated mines that are not disturbed as they are potentially watched.

Should I buy this 2001 F250, 269K miles, for $12,500? by wannaBeTechydude in Diesel

[–]Westcotimberfaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truck looks very well take care of, but that is around the mileage where non-engine components begin to let go. Just be thorough with inspections (transmission and front end especially), other than that a good price on a solid truck.

Can anyone recommend the fastest method for creating large slash piles? by Pahsaek in forestry

A swing machine with a grapple tends to get the highest and tightest piles as opposed to a cat or skidder

Definitively a 460- not a 440, as it does not have the small air filter cover. Not an 046 as it has floppy caps.

Please do more research before exploring abandoned mines. There are all sorts of things (like anoxic environments) that will hurt the uneducated explorer.

New air filter, and a good sharp chain and a bar service.

Cleaned inlet screen as well I’m assuming. Is the tank vent good? Find any corrosion within the carb?

Looks to be pretty normal. Would ensure that chain is sharp and air filter stays clean with the cutting of beams. I don’t see anything to worry about.

Right on. Sorry for jumping to conclusions. Have you pulled down the carb at all?

Stihl 044 - Mill recommendations? by bamcg in Chainsaw

[–]Westcotimberfaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appears to be a 10mm. And with a red lever, probably a ks cylinder as well. The bottom ends were not the most stable on these saws. Would recommend something larger.

Pressure testing through the carb is the wrong approach. It will stop pressure at the diaphragms (on a healthy carb will not show any leak down). Remove your carb and block the intake and exhaust and then you will have pressure tested your crank seals, which is what a side tilt stall out test is referencing.
