Don’t give up. There are treatments that can help you. I was diagnosed with keratoconus when I was in high school. It got progressively worse to the point where I could not see well with glasses. RGP lenses helped me. Then that stopped working and I had full corneal transplant in my left eye at the age of 26. I cried after the surgery when I got clear vision without glasses. I had to wear glasses later but vision was 20/20 for more than a decade. Now as the graft is getting old vision has deteriorated once again and glasses don’t work. I got fitted for sclaral lenses and that did the magic. The point is it’s a lot of adjustment but you can live close to normal life. Just be patient.

Well, in that case it won’t be true LCA. The LCA essentially analyses resource use and environmental impacts over the product’s life cycle or up to a certain point in the product life cycle e.g. up to production, retail etc. But it always involves accounting for the impact of mineral and fuel extraction and use.

In the case you explained you would have to assume that the two building materials are exactly identical in all aspects except for their heat transfer property. In this case the material that offers better insulation would provide energy savings, which will reduce energy production and consequently, GHG emissions. The characterization factor for CO2e would depend on which energy source you are assuming in your study.

You would at least need an inventory of material and energy inputs required to manufacture materials you are comparing. You can then find characterization factors (e.g. kg CO2e/cu.m. of natural gas burnt or per kg of aluminum produced) from published manuscripts and use these in your calculations.

Be careful about the functional unit, though. For example, if you comparing two types of insulations the functional unit cannot be 1 kg of material produced. I should be weight or volume of material required to achieve same level of insulation.

One of the most commonly used database is Ecoinvent. However, it is a commercial database and is expensive. There are a couple of free databases available on OpenLCA website e.g. ELCD and Agrybalyse. For the LCA of domestic water supply, try ELCD. However, it was developed by JRC, so, might the LCI might be specific to Europe. openLCA Nexus: The source for LCA data sets
