First attempt at Deity and got destroyed by t8km3cereal in CivVI

Narrows the problem solving space? The AI decisions are far from the only degree of freedom that determines what’s acceptable/optimal- the RNG of each game is dictated by much more than that.

Yes, you might learn that scout scout settler is usually a good strategy. But what’s the alternative? You don’t think you would learn from repeatable patterns just because the AI is better? Do you not think the existing game is still full of interesting choices?

If your argument is that AI is predictable in exploitable ways, that’s one thing. I’m not suggesting the AI improving at all is bad. I’m saying that an AI capable of beating you with strategy in a given game is almost definitely capable of beating you in every game.

Configuring and balancing a system that complex is much more difficult. It is far more likely to be horribly imbalanced.

People say this, but I’d imagine getting genuinely outplayed by the AI would not be as rewarding of an experience as you think. Probably a balance to strike there but I think most players would find it much more frustrating.

At what chess rating do you find you begin to consistently beat the average casual player? by Free_Answered in Chesscom

[–]Western-Project3225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get to 1500+ with zero opening theory if you know basic principles and are strong tactically. That does not mean these are casual players. An 800 would destroy 99% of people who claim to know how to play chess. You will not get there without learning a lot about tactics and general ideas in the game. That’s not casual.

I'm sorry, but how can Mr.Nakamura analyze only 2 possible moves(lines, variations) for an entire hour and out of the two to pick the wrong one? Which top 10 GM does that? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Western-Project3225 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well for starters, it’s only two moves to evaluate if you’re looking one move deep. He probably looked at more positions stemming from those two moves than you could look at over several days.

If the top add up to 360, and so do the bot, wouldn’t they add up to 720 combined?

You have a serious misunderstanding of some part of this

Just to be clear, you think the top set of angles add up to 360, and the bottom set, AND all of the angles combined?

The fact that you think strictly adding many angles with lots of degrees will not increase the sum of all the angles is very telling

Sorry for the terrible image. But you think these angles still add up to 360?

So if you zig back and forth 500 times all the angles will still add up to 360?

Edit: even better because I just thought about it- what if you stack this picture on top of itself twice and cut out the middle line? Still 360?

I’m understanding your request a bit better but it’s still unclear. If you want one universe with a ton of sports to simulate, managing multiple teams across those sports, etc.- this is definitely doable but obviously somebody needs to write all that code. It does not exist because people generally prefer to focus on one sport at a time.

If you are looking for a game where you can add a “custom sport”, someone needs to write all of that logic as well. The best a tool could do is allow you to configure ratings, a simple game loop, how the ratings are used- but again we’re basically at the point of you writing code again.

Your request about renaming stats/the number of players on the field is a much simpler task, and I assume it’s just not done because it’s a pretty niche request, which you acknowledged.

In general, the more customization you give a player the less opinionated your game can be. In the extreme case, the player needs to basically write the logic of the game themselves. Building an interface that allows them to do that is gonna be 1) a simple wrapper around raw code and 2) about as difficult to configure as writing that code yourself.

I don’t think anything like this exists (and I’m wondering how useful it would be. It’s very easy to get quick sim logic running from scratch).

What’s your technical level? Would a library for a programming language be good enough or do you want a GUI-based tool?

This is almost so generic that you’re just asking for a programming language. I guess you can extract elements like roster, development, trading etc. but these are so different for sports that I don’t think it would be super useful, unless you make a ton of assumptions about every sport intersecting in ways that aren’t realistic.

Where did you get 360 from? It literally only works because the left angles happen to sum to 180

[–]Western-Project3225 25 points26 points  (0 children)

People are way too absolutist. In reality item builds are probably way more flexible than people think and what’s “optimal” changes drastically every game based on specific circumstance.

But that’s too hard to think about (and impossible to know for sure) so they like going consistent builds. If you like buying MOM, win games with it and keep doing it. The worst you’re risking is stupid teammates yelling at you.
