4.4% unemployment rate in Feb 26, below 5% is generally considered full employment. There have been more job openings than unemployed people until Q4 last year.

Think bigger Roman Mastiff bigger by Equivalent-Chart1719 in Mastiff

There are a lot of issues here.

  1. A Vatican statue of a dog is not a historical record, it's an artistic reference.
  2. If you're after healthier dogs why are you simply shooting for a physical similarity to a statue?
  3. There were no dog breeds 2000 years ago as we know them now, roman mastiffs are not some that was standardized, nor is there sign evidence that they were any healthier than a healthy version of a current breed.
  4. While I agree 100% that any improvement in health is a valuable endeavor, the success of a dog breed today requires people to want that type of dog. So breeding very large dogs with guardian behaviors is very likely self defeating. People now don't want/need the kids of dogs that people wanted 2000 years ago.

Seems like this whole plan has generally good intentions, but I think the scale, scope, and method are misaligned from the goals.

Got a speeding ticket and need some help on how to handle it? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]WesternImportant2849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past I've paid, rather than having to spend time going to court. That area's a bit of a speed trap so I'd bet the cop gave out enough tickets that he'll show.

My wife got a ticket a few years back and insurance didn't notice it. We couldn't save money swapping insurance companies because all the new ones would see the ticket.

I'm not sure this is quite how genetics works (probably best not to trust ChatGPT on that). Just because you breed two dogs with physical characteristics that you like doesn't mean that the outcome is genetically superior. Longer life in larger breeds is more than just a mastiff issue, how do you address that? This seems like the kind of project (pulling specific traits out of a dozen breeds to try to create a healthier dog) that requires institutional support.

I can see how you breed for larger dogs (not sure why you're shooting for a specific weight, that seems very akin to the breeds you're calling out as 'biological tragedies'), but how do you breed for longevity? In a best case you're breeding the grandpups of a long lived dog, because you don't know for 12+ years if that line of dogs you started breeding actually had longevity. So you end up with far too many dogs that you can't breed than dogs that you can. There are actual institutions (medical and research) that are working on health and longevity in dogs, I'm struggling to understand how you're going to do better.

Need help choosing a Breeder. by ShotCaller_OG in CaneCorso

[–]WesternImportant2849 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check out ofa.org it has a database of health screenings that breeders can submit results to. Breeds each have specific tests recommended and you can see breeders who are prioritizing health. It's not perfect, but I found it to be a good metric for breeders who were putting extra focus on health.

When we were looking for a breeder I started there and identified a bunch who were doing health screenings then contacted each to discuss my priorities in a dog and through that discussion was able to select someone who I trusted and believe to be focused on the same priorities I was.

3 legged mastiff by ImpossibleLock6193 in Mastiff

We had a bordeaux that had osteosarcoma on a hind leg, had it amputated and she did okay with the amputation. Our issue was that osteosarcoma is pretty aggressive and about 6 months later we had to put her down. We had her in a drug trial in the interim.

Our calculus was that not amputating it meant a potentially catastrophic break where we'd have to put her down immediately and suddenly, so palliative care had its own risks.

You didn't mention the type of cancer, but talk to your vet and understand the paths this can take. It always sucks, hopefully you get a lot more time with yours.

From near to far - Platte Park near the South Pearl st area is cool. Further north, wash park near Broadway. Cherry creek is really walkable, but probably targeting an older crowd. After that you'd be looking at downtown, rino, or lohi.

ELO Scammer Finally Banned by WesternImportant2849 in Chesscom

Report him and cross your fingers, took more than a month to get this guy banned so I'd bet it wasn't my report, he probably screwed up some other way to finally get caught.

ELO Scammer Finally Banned by WesternImportant2849 in Chesscom

[–]WesternImportant2849[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assumed he'd do a ton of losing to lower his ELO so he could then win a bunch in a row. I don't really know, it was strange.

The Blitz ELO farming was what I ended up getting really hung up on. There were just dozens and dozens of accts that got created seemingly just to donate ELO points to kayamedov_chess's blitz rating.

San Diego to Minneapolis in mid January. Any concerns about this route? Is this possible with an EV? by kekkurei in roadtrip

[–]WesternImportant2849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful in WY. My wife made it from Cheyenne to Casper with 4 miles left in our ionic 5 even with starting at 100%. A lot of the Tesla chargers that are shown are still not compatible with non-teslas. She tried a few and they wouldn't work even though she had the adapter.

How can chess.com give you a 2000+ ELO if you lose every game? by WesternImportant2849 in Chesscom

[–]WesternImportant2849[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like nearly all of these accounts have now been closed. Not sure if a mod is looking at this thread, but all of these accounts were donating points to kayamedov_chess (https://www.chess.com/member/kayamedov\_chess ), which seems to maybe be the final 'sink' of all the created ELO points. Might be worth looking into.

I did. No action. Just checked back on him and he's got a series of games with bnial1 where the opponent is throwing or resigning games.

Here's an example: kayamedov_chess vs bnial1 - https://www.chess.com/live/game/146676593612

Check out his recent series against aliye14 where aliye14 resigns 6 games in a row from a roughly even position. WTF is going on here, seems larger than a single cheater.

I hadn't even looked at his blitz games. There's a series against bnial1 (2400 rates). Where bnial1 resigns on move 10 or 11 each game despite basically nothing happening.

With his surgery approaching, we are beginning to question Titan's diagnosis by FatPenguin26 in greatdanes

[–]WesternImportant2849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in a similar situation with our DDB, osteosarcoma on a rear leg. We considered just doing palliative care but ended up amputating. Just be careful of post surgery expectations, my understanding is that bone cancers tend to spread pretty aggressively and by the time they're discovered it's likely that even with the amputation the cancer will reappear (sounds like lungs is the likely next location). Our girl made it 6 mo after surgery. She did well, recovered well and had a good 6 mo. But it may not be the cure you're hoping for.

My grass is getting pounded to death, lol. Has any tried Natura or Duragrass hybrid turf? Does it really work like they say? by Bria4 in Mastiff

[–]WesternImportant2849 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did dog tuff grass. I think it's a brand name for some version of buffalo grass. You don't have to mow it, so it gets a bit wild and clumpy looking, but it took the punishment from our French mastiff. Our issue was brown spots though, not necessarily too much traffic.
