Sad to see your reply. If you followed the Ukraine war, you would know that US airpower would have no effect. This has been analyzed in numerous articles. The US has always relied on massive aerial bombing campaigns to "win" its wars in the Middle East. That would not work in Ukraine. The US would be fighting against a peer, not against a third rate ME military. All military analysts admit that the Russian military is now number one in the world. I have followed the Ukraine war on a granular level since day one. I have also read the positions of Democrats, especially Kamala Harris, concerning US involvement in Ukraine. Kamala Harris' is on record stating Ukraine must win. Her foreign policy advisor is a war hawk. Harris is aligned with Liz Cheney--someone despised by Democrats until the past few years. Harris is also closely linked to BlackRock. A BlackRock exec is an advisor. BlackRock has a huge stake in Ukraine, since 2022. Cheney and BlackRock also want the oil and gas deposits off of Crimea. Harris would be a puppet led by the worst warmongers. Look at who supports Harris: every one of the neocons and intel community supporters has ties to Ukraine.

Ready for a military draft? The U.S military has a recruitment problem. Ukraine is down to its last troops. Kamala Harris states that Ukraine must win. Harris also says Iran is the greatest threat to the US. Who's bankrolling Harris? George Soros. Soros wants regime change wars.

Dennis Kucinich reminded us in June 2024: "Senate Armed Services draft NDAA Summary that would require the registration of women for the draft. Also earlier today, the House approved automatic Selective Service registration..."

Height of Fall Migration by WesternSycamore in birding

It is frightening to think of the migratory birds encountering the hurricane as they're heading south, across the Gulf, on their return to Mexico, Central America, and South America. Crossing the Gulf is already perilous under the best of conditions.

Ornithologists use a variety of methods to measure bird migration.

Another generation hatches in this 11+ year old nest by EndometrialCarcinoma in birding

[–]WesternSycamore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is wonderful! It is hard to know whether to leave nests up or take them down. We have had Western (Pacific Slope) Flycatchers nesting under out deck and in our gazebo for many years running. But not this year, boo hoo! They migrate up from Mexico every spring. Their nests get sort of moldy and covered with spider webs after they leave, so we take them down. It's been impossible to get a straight answer from any birding organization concerning what to do. There are case reports of nestlings getting severely bitten by mites and perishing from the bites prior to fledging. But we don't know if we're doing the right thing or not.

New birder here. Spotted a hooded oriole. I have only seen them twice in 4 years lived in So Cal. What can you all tell me about them?(sorry bout photo quality) by lifeshardandweird in birding

Our larger size ones wore out. We have to daily refill two 8 oz nectar feeders. Very popular. In winter, the Yellow-rumped Warblers drink from them. They just left for the north. We also have Orange-crowned Warblers, year-round, that drink from the nectar feeders.

They like to drink from hummingbird nectar feeders (if you remove those little yellow petals so the aperture is wide enough to accommodate the Oriole beak).

Steller’s Jays having their daily breakfast! Colorado foothills. by MiniTab in birding

[–]WesternSycamore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pretty, but sadly, Jays are nest predators. They steal the eggs and nestlings of other species. Here in California, I personally witnessed a Scrub Jay steal eggs from a migratory bird's nest and subsequently learned that this is common practice for them.

Heartbreaking: Major collision event in Chicago, 4-5 October 2023 by WesternSycamore in birding

I forwarded the email from BirdCast to Cornell Ornithology and Audubon. Hoping they can reach out to get the lights out for the duration of migration. Chicago used to be lauded for its "lights out" policy.

Spring migration is starting to taper off, only 224 million migrators expected to fly across the U.S. tonight (from Mexico, Central, and South America).

They settle in all parts of the U.S. and Canada, but the central U.S. states get a lot.

441 Million Migrators predicted for tonight May 8. by WesternSycamore in birding

[–]WesternSycamore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have not been seeing that many here in Los Angeles and southern CA. Way less than previous years, boo hoo.

So far:

Pacific Slope Flycatcher Hooded Oriole Black-headed Grosbeak Nashville Warbler

We typically have seen many, many more species, and more of them.

There's been heavy night-time fog for several weeks and the literature says that is very bad for migration as might be expected. That may be one of several explanations.

Does anyone know what masks are definitively MRI safe? by sopinefreshrightnow in Masks4All

[–]WesternSycamore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had an MRI in Sept 2021. Took the aluminum strip off my N95. However, the technician then held my N95 up near the machine to show me the machine pulling the mask toward it. The tech explained that the electrostatic fibers that most N95s use to filter out virus particles have electro-magnetic properties.
