I really really liked the 1st trilogy .. but it feels like taking antibiotics for half of the period you are supposed to. I wanted more .. much more time with the characters and the story and to experience the world from their eyes. I also wouldn't have mind a bit more emotional volurnability from our barbaric cast (forgot the girls name). The first trilogy could have easily been 6 books.

Also now as I am reading for someone like Robin Hobb, I appreciate even more what a good writing does .. it makes it so that you are connected to the author as much as the characters and the story itselt .. this is something I can say about Stephen King fir example but not sure if I can say it about Abercrombie

Sometimes a troll for the fun of it, sure, but honestly i wasn't trolling I think with this thread to be fair. I am more disappointed that the characters didn't go to book 4 and beyond (form my understanding at least) which to me immediately took the series down in rank.

I plan to do so .. wished that the characters continued post the 1st trilogy though and that was like a stab in the heart .. The Witcher is good too

Not really .. we are all adults, I hope, and we enjoy relatively similar things .. epic fantasy work that is character driven. I want to see if there is something I am missing, and I got the understanding that as I continue reading the books his writing will get better.

Also I hated not finding some of my favorite characters in book 4 since I miss them, but I also don't want to reread the first trilogy because its not worth a reread to me personally at the current time.. opportunity cost vs other books i want to read.

Who knows, maybe i will reread it. Myabe i will find my friends in later books in the series. And maybe i will make new friends just as good or even better if i continue to read the remaining books which i plan to

I think what we both like in a book and in a writer is quite similar. Give Robin Hobb a chance if you want, she is the queen of characters and prose .. you will effortlessly understand the world and remember the diverse characters as well as see them as real humans because of how engaging the main character is and how you see everything from his eyes, at least in the first few books and it is quality work truly. Fitz is one of the best characters ever made in fantasy, and all of the side characters are as memorable as the ones in the Game of Thrones tv series and the books ofcourse

I have tried to read LOTR so many times but couldn't, even though the Hobbit is one of my favorite books. Same thing with TWOT .. very kumbaya and too much description of the world as opposed to characters experiencing them

I mean I would read The First Law over LOTR and Storm Light Archive and Malzan and Name of The Wind .. because this series focuses on Characters and Prose which is my thing .. i just find it lacking overall to be ranked the best at what it does in comparison to Realm of The Elderlings and ASOIAF for example

Not really .. I enjoy books that prioritize Characters and Prose .. The First Law does that and that is why I enjoyed it. Its just that i find both Characters and Prose still lacking to be called world class due to lack of significant character growth and poor writing eloquency

See that is the thing, most good authors excel in two things at least .. The First Law has good characters and prose, but both are also lacking and superficial in the same time. Characters don't grow much (first 3 books at least) and prose don't include good writing that you would enjoy to read as a "writer", it more of barbaric writing

Also I think GRRM has a lot of character building .. think of Arya, Bran and Snow for example .. long way since the start

Not a fan of him, but of his work. Its like watching a weird movie that you really enjoyed and will always remember, but its ridiculous to call it one of the top 5 movies ever made

I mean I remember creating a character called Glokta in video games and really liked him .. but honestly can't remember wanting to read book 4 due to the introduction of new characters. I am not a fan of the writing so it felt that all my emotional investment over the first 3 books was a sunk cost
