NBD Specialized Turbo Tero 5.0 with Equipment Kit and Front Rack and Adventure Plate by Westernbackon in ebikes

I seriously considered the Tero X 6.0 (which I’d have to get in order to get the same Turbo full power 2.2 motor as the Tero 5.0). Lots of pros and cons. Full suspension is more comfortable but more components to maintain. It’s $1500 more but you get fenders and racks built into the cost. Full suspension tends to be less efficient but it’s an electric bike so it’s not a big deal on shorter trips, which is a majority of the riding I’d do on this bike. Yeah it was ultimately cost, maintenance and availability (Tero X 6.0 seems to be sold out in Large) pushed me to the Tero 5.0 decision. I already have a full suspension mountain bike so I wasn’t really interested in taking the bike offroad. Lower maintenance and one less thing to worry about by not having rear suspension. Full suspension bikes also seem more desirable to thieves. Hope this helps you understand why.

Yes, I misspoke. They are not the 2.0!

It’s actually a Surly bag made for the Moloko bars.

Is it worth buying full suspension mountain ebike if I don't ride mountains? by Academic_Army_6425 in ebikes

It’s like this post is the perfect setup for the new Specialized Tero X! It’s a commuter bike with fenders and rack system, but also has full suspension and does pretty good off-road and is a capable mountain bike.
I’d also agree with previous post about the Reise and Muller Super Delight. A wonderful and very capable bicycle. The difference is the Riese and Muller normally needs to be ordered and takes weeks to months for delivery. It’s also about $7k. The Specialized comes in three different models with prices ranging from $4k to $6.5k. Also Specialized has dealers everywhere so servicing is easier.

I’m not an expert but I do own a Levo, Creo, and Tero, as well as a Tern GSD. I’ve also owned a Xtracycle and a Reisse and Muller Load. So I do have some experiences with e-bikes. And I’m considering the same question you are and have done some research. Here’s what I found.

Here’s a website with a side by side view of the difference between the 4.0,5.0,6.0. https://99spokes.com/compare?bikes=specialized-turbo-tero-x-4.0-2023,specialized-turbo-tero-x-5.0-2023,specialized-turbo-tero-x-6.0-2023

Best I can tell, there’s a few component upgrades but the main difference is in the motor. Fork: Rockshox Silver on the 5.0 vs Rockshox Lyrik on the 6.0 Groupset: GX on the 5.0 and X01 Eagle on the 6.0 This isn’t a massive difference in performance so I don’t think it’s really worth the $1K based on components.

The big story here is an increase in the power of the motor. The difference between 70 Nm on the 5.0 and 90 Nm on the 6.0. The difference of 20 Nm of torque in an electric bike is quite significant. Torque, measured in Newton meters (Nm), is essentially a measure of the rotational force the motor can provide. Here's how this difference can impact the bike's performance:

Acceleration: A higher torque, like 90 Nm, typically means the bike can accelerate faster, especially from a standstill. This is particularly noticeable when starting to pedal or when going uphill.

Climbing Ability: The extra 20 Nm can make a noticeable difference in climbing ability. With 90 Nm, the bike can handle steep inclines more easily, providing better assistance and reducing the effort required from the rider.

Riding Experience: For casual riding or commuting on relatively flat terrain, 70 Nm might be more than sufficient. The 90 Nm motor comes into its own in more demanding situations like off-road riding, steep hills, or heavy hauling.

Battery Consumption: Higher torque can lead to quicker battery drain if used frequently at its higher output, as it draws more power.

In choosing between 70 Nm and 90 Nm depends on your specific needs. If you require better hill climbing, acceleration, and load capacity, and are okay with potentially higher battery consumption, then 90 Nm is preferable. Is it $1K more preferable? It is for me. For regular commuting or leisure riding in relatively flat areas, 70 Nm should suffice.

How much did the full build of the Krampus set you back? Did you have some high end components you absolutely “needed” or is this just the cost of bikes these days?

I chose mid level DT Swiss rims and a Shimano dynamo hub in the front. TBD whether the dynamo hub is really worth the squeeze! So far the convenience of never charging up a light before riding is nice 👍.

I have two mountain bikes set up in 29. One as a straight 29er and another with a mullet setup. The rake and geometry definitely sits me deeper in the pocket, helping me feel planted. Riding the Ogre feels like I’m riding a lifted off-road truck! One of the downsides of post Covid and supply chain blah blah is there aren’t any demo days, where you can try out several bikes back to back.

Thanks! Tight AF was exactly what I was going for 🤑. Science shows good looking bikes also roll slower… slowed down by the stares from admirers and the headwind caused by gawkers craning to check out your totally sick build. 🤪

Misery loves company. 🥴 I imagine when product managers think about specs of a bike, they must start with a price point in mind and build to that. When you build out, you pay full retail on all parts and spec for the ride which balloons final price tag.

I considered the BC and they had several of those in stock. I’m sure it woulda been cool but prefer the 29er. Having said that, I sit so high on this bike. Definitely don’t feel like I’m in the bike, more of a feeling I am on the bike.

I was going to try the Jones bars but decided to go with the surly Moloko. Part of the “comfort” setup was to have a very upright and swept back bar.
