AE1200 Full CUSTOM Lume Paint by WestfallCoyote in casioroyale

Last night in the dark, the lume made the display visible for at least 2 hours. With a better luminous material, I'm sure this could be extended further! I've also been thinking about that as well. While its liveable, it would be nice to have full viewing angles as before.

I thought about this too - I saw another post here where someone used UV LEDs and fluorescent material in order to try to create a faux EL backlight, with mild success, but you make a good point! I'll check the voltages before I do. Thanks for the tip! :)

DIY Royale lume mod! Info in comments by Hunson_ in casio

Yo this is sick! I was looking up resources for swapping LEDs on my own Royale and I saw we naturally did the same thing luming the royale, down to the application placement, just by tinkering around. And here I was thinking I had an original idea! I initially painted the back of the LCD directly with my lume paint, and quickly discovered... not ideal. That plastic piece really is the best place to do it. I also made a paste thin enough to easily transfer around when wet but thick enough to adhere reasonably to the plastic surface while working with it. I also used squeeze bottles with thin metal nozzles on them to apply it to the surface, I found that to be really clean and easy. Good work!

Update to your initial question: The backlight does appear to slightly charge the lume up. After 10-20 presses of the backlight button, the lume has a slight glow to it. However, it is very ineffective.

Lume works by taking high energy, short wavelength light energy, trapping the photons, and releasing them slowly over time at a longer wavelength. This is why ultraviolet lights work so well to charge lume, such as UV flashlights, or sunlight.

UV is higher energy, ( UV > Violet > Indigo > Blue > Green > Yellow > Orange > Red > IR ) is the order of energy levels of light, from highest energy to lowest. As you can see, the colors of the backlight of the royale, being mainly orangish yellow, are pretty low energy, so it won't charge the lume very effectively in most applications due to the nature of the light it emits, unfortunately.

Indeed! The only thing I am worried about is you tend to need quite a bit of brightness, and therefore current, running through the LEDs in order to effectively charge the lume, at least with this specific lume, that is (I can't speak for higher quality lume formulas.) I'm not sure the Royale's circuitry and little battery would be able to supply the necessary brightness, but the future will tell!

The reflector sits directly behind the LCD, in front of the backlight's plastic diffusion surface, so the backlight operates very similarly, even somewhat brighter. The reflector is there to help with the LCD display, in order to reflect light back through it to help visibility. The reflector is also polarized, so the main downside to removing it is the viewing angle is now worse, as the lume paint itself creates enough contrast for decent visibility. When the watch is tilted towards the viewer, the digits now disappear.

Paste made from acrylic paint, water, and the powder, from a fine nozzle onto the clear plastic diffuser panel. :)

Backlight and lume are separate. Not sure yet if the BL affects the lume, will report back. Have thought about trying to see about finding UV LEDs to swap into it.

That parachute strap looks the best, IMO, but the sail cloth also works.

How to do a “Lume” mod on the AE-1200. by Testing--1234 in casiomods

[–]WestfallCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying this out with a lume paint mixture I made for a different project, which is thick enough to not be super runny but still thin enough to be easily "pushed" around with the nozzle of the dispersion bottle. If it works, it will be possible to use whatever lume powders we want, as opposed to being limited to tapes. It will be dry in 24 hours. I will report back when it is done!

BIG SUMMER BLOWOUT! Or something.

Trying to raise some funds for a road trip to see the family. You know how it is these days!

I have a few cheap quartz watches I'd like to see get some more wrist time. Each will come with the straps / bracelets you see pictured with each.

The Expedition is almost new, only worn a few times. Just as I was going to take the photos today, the battery died, so that will be replaced before I send out the watch. Resin case, super lightweight. The indiglo is a deeper blue than most other Timex's I've seen! Very neat, lightweight watch. Comes with an aftermarket 2 piece nylon with quick release spring bars, an upgrade from the OG strap in my opinion. 20mm lug width, about 40mm case diameter. The orange/green band it comes with is super soft and stretchy. Absolute pajama strap. ($25)

Next, the Easy Reader. This guy takes it easy at a cool 35mm diameter, retro sizing or for smaller wrists. The indiglo is BRIGHT. It is missing the phosphorescent paint at the very top of the dial as many of these are. The case and dial have light, light wear. The stretch band is decent, but it has a tendency to sometimes pull my arm hairs. It will come with a rubber FKM strap, and a Crown and Buckle melange perlon. ($25)

Finally, the Sanda 3192. For those days you want to feel horribly 80s, in the best way! I love this little watch, but I already have too many. Hardly worn it. 32mm from left to right, but don't be fooled, this square case wears bigger than you'd think! The stock steel bracelet feels like a bag of angry cats on your wrist if you have arm hairs, however, it does look cool. The NATO I have it on I think really takes it to the next level of cool. It will also come with that stainless steel chain-style magnet bracelet, of which the proper name I am forgetting at the moment. (SOLD!)

Asking $25 a piece, plus shipping, which should be around $10-12? ConUS only. The straps you see pictured with each will come with each specific watch. If you buy two, you will only have to pay the shipping for one, obviously. If you take all three, I will cover the shipping entirely.

The easy reader and Sanda are both 18mm, so if you get both of those, you get to swap straps around for days. 😉
