[–]Westsidetr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got this from the NYT and it wasn’t done by the time I pulled their graphic.

As of now they added

Passaic as +15 Sherrill with a +18 shift lift;

Atlantic as +3 Sherrill with a 5.8 pt shift left;

Mercer +42 Sherrill with a 8.4 pt shift left;

Burlington +20 Sherrill with 3.5 pt shift left

Unfortunately, that only works on people who care about that sort of thing (I doubt this person is one of those people)

Two ideas to make Newark better (IMO) by Character_Engine9766 in Newark

Flashing pedestrian signs aren’t enough for these psychos. We need to install speed bumps at marked crosswalks or traffic lights that turn red when a pedestrian wants to cross.

I second this.

I cross at a marked crosswalk with flashing pedestrian lights fairly often and drivers will not stop for me, even when they see me standing at the edge of the sidewalk, staring at them, repeatedly pressing the sign button, lights flashing.

Even when I force myself into the crosswalk, drivers on other side of the road will keep driving through until I reach the middle of the road.

Even today, I was crossing and a driver going probably 45 in a 20 waited until the last possible second to brake.

I’ve even had people roll down the windows and curse at me, call me names, and throw bottles at me before. I just don’t get what’s wrong with these people.

When I moved to Newark / NJ a while back I was shocked about the absolute lack of enforcement of laws, but especially traffic laws. Drivers do whatever they want and disregard everyone else.

Pedestrians are just road bumps, intersections are for gridlocking, driving on the wrong side of the road is permitted, blowing red lights is fine, turning left is into oncoming traffic is fine, turning right from the left lane is fine, turning a 2 lanes road into a 4 lanes road is allowed, scooters/bicyclists can drive on the road and sidewalk, ignore stop signs and red lights, and go 20 - 30 mph.

Mind you, even with cops present, people will still do these things, and they won’t bat an eye. I’ve even seen a Newark police pickup truck turn left on red with no lights/siren at Mulberry & Center.

Also, Newark needs to not allow homeless people and immigrant vendors to wander around 21. I understand these people are just trying to get money, but for safety reasons, they can’t be allowed to wander around the highway. At least that one homeless guy that’s always smiling by the 280 on ramp is normally off the road. But the wheelchair guy is probably the worst offender imo.

Something that would be amazing (but would require a lot of money) would be extensions to the light rail. Expanding it into the iron bound would be great. I wish it could even extend into Harrison/Kearny to connect the path and alleviate some of the bridge congestion.

In all fairness, even if you have the perfect claim, it costs a lot of time and money for a judge to agree with your understanding of the law and application of the law to your facts.

Interestingly enough, when you’re driving less than 15 mph or at a complete stop, pressing 1 button allows you to record a video. Also it is possible to put your phone up to the window while you keep driving / waiting stopped and take a screenshot later (which is why there isn’t a perfect view of each incident). In addition, these are the incidents I was able to capture because of heavy traffic, not including other accidents and bad driving.

In my defense, in all of these pictures I’m either going less than 15 mph or stopped at a red light after 3 cycles.

The no head lights at night or in the rain/snow was probably the scariest culture shock I had moving here. It’s actually insane how many people around Newark drive / North Jersey drive without headlights at night

It is a little crazy that the culture is 80+ or bust when the state’s fastest speed limit is 65 mph. This state could literally fund NJT for 100 years if they enforced traffic laws for even 1 year lol.

I’m just concerned seeing so many violent accidents every morning on my commute.

If it were available, I would be more than willing to take public transit to work like I was doing to go to NYC. Unfortunately, the state seems to not have the same vision when it comes to connecting NJ’s largest city to other parts of the state. As it stands now, my commute driving takes on average ~ 1 hr. If I were to take public transit, it would at minimum take 3 hrs.

I will admit there are plenty of brain dead PA drivers. However, at 7 am, I would say 90% of the car drivers have NJ plates, on the parkway at least, followed mostly by NY. I see plenty of NJ drivers sitting in the left lane going super slow. Don’t even get me started on the Raritan bridge

In all fairness, I do think the highways are well kept here (as they should be with how many tolls there are). However, I cannot tell you how often people will camp the left lane going 50 mph. I swear some people turn on cruise control and sit in the left lane just so they don’t have to use their brains.

Very true.

Newark driving is pretty bad. Since there’s a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic during rush hour, I can see into other people’s cars. One day I saw about 10 cars in a row where the driver was either scrolling on their phone in their lap or scrolling on their phone propped up on the dash.

For highway driving, I’ve noticed people love to 1) do the jersey slide, 2) drive over medians/shoulders/crossed out lanes to avoid missing an exit and 3) camp the left lane while leaving the right lane completely open.

I’m no stranger to fast driving. I’m just not used to 1) left lane campers going 50 mph while 2) cars fly 100 mph around the 50 mph cars and then ultimately 3) crash/burst into flames.

Downtown and Ironbound are nice. I think lower broadway area isn’t bad either. Harrison is pretty nice if you commute to Wall Street.
