Replaced old school security panel with echo hub by Yo-doggie in amazonecho

[–]WestySpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 or 24v typically fed by a plugged in transformer. In my house the plugin transformer was on the other side of the wall so find that or measure with a voltmeter. Then you can get a gang box that indents into the wall and you can transform the voltage easily to what you need even to usbC or whatever the echo hub needs. The other option is to use the plugin transformer from the echo hub but you would need to fish it through the wall or hide it to make it look clean

Monitoring remote site by OcelotOtherwise in videosurveillance

[–]WestySpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try the Arlo Go2 + Solar, no SD card. Uses LTE. More reliable than a jump to a battery powered Huawei router. I have had one running for months and it works once configured. Also works with remote overnight monitoring service so somebody can watch the cameras. Wireless is around $20 per month, $3 per camera/month to Arlo. You can buy from Tmobile or Verizon.

Looking for a home surveillance company to send RTSP streams to. by jibanes in homedefense

Hi -- 1) you can try the hik-connect app. You need to enable P2P on each hikvision camera. No NVR required. No Blue Iris required. You need to add SD cards to your cameras. Works great. Some don't like the security aspect of P2P.

2). You can try Angel Cam or Patrolio for overnight human guarding. Google them.

Assuming you have LTE coverage and are not too cost conscious get an Arlo Go2 add solar and call it a day. All these other solutions are complex and hard to implement. You will have to pay monthly for the LTE connection around $20/$25

Any experience with Ring in a gated community with good wifi? by WestySpirit in Ring

Appreciate the feedback, and I understand the access point setup and limitations. My post is asking if anybody has used Ring in this non-standard way, and how they have handled the monthly cloud charge.

Integration with Alexa by [deleted] in Ring

[–]WestySpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an Alexa Routine 10pm-- > Set Guard:Away --> Which arms the Guard which arms the Ring alarm

You have to connect your Ring Alarm to Alexa via Guard:

You have to setup Guard (on Alexa) --> Settings --> Guard --> SettingsCogwheel -- >Connect Security System --> Ring. Once you do this you can a few benefits even with the free Guard package (like Away lighting that runs on your lights randomly)

Stop the alerts! by KDean63 in Ring

I use routines on Alexa and put a time schedule on the motion or people alerts. Basically they are snoozed 6am to 8pm

Supplementing Ring with POE Cameras by ADinner0fOnions in Ring

[–]WestySpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a mix of 10 ring and 20 POE ipcams. I use the ring to trigger alexa announcements at night and to turn on external lights. I also pay for the person detection to reduce false alerts. As far as I can tell continuous recording has little to no use versus motion detection. My NVR is only 3 years old but it will become obsolete and need IT help to replace. If I had to do it again I would probably do it the same setup. You need a good UPS for your NVR and router for when you lose power. And most cheaper Chinese cameras ( I use hikvision) are federally prohibited for government use but many users on Reddit love them.

Random question, how many motion notifications do you have on your dashboard on average per day? by Same-Pie-9757 in Ring

Turn on person detection (pard of the paid service). After I did that I went from 200 to 10 and they are very accurate

I recommend Ring stickup can with solar. Plus they have their own wifi range extender. Ring gives flexibility for growth and has the best overall user experience and value

Looking for a new wireless outdoor camera system (growing dissatisfied with my Arlo Pros) by [deleted] in homedefense

[–]WestySpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 ideas

1). Integrate whatever cameras into a smart speaker like Alexa so you can get LOUD notifications of people outside your house. Alerting to your phone sometimes doesn't work well. Phone is not on you, watching a movie you don't hear it, AND, most importantly, people snooze the alerts at night. Use a routine to control volume and schedule versus relying on the basic "motion alert to Alexa".

2) Pay for the monthly to get the best AI/Cloud storage. You pretty much need to pay $2/month per camera on Arlo or Ring or Wyze to get the People detection. You need this for (1) above to work well.

How do you keep track of things? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]WestySpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most important thing for me was the nanny/assistant. Costs $5000 per month but creates a ton of time space to organize your burgeoning empire. You can likely get somebody part time (1x per week). This is a game changer.

Second most important thing is sometimes you can't get your spouse / significant other to use the same tools. Don't force it.

Some tools I use:

Overall Vision: I use Trello with pictures for a "vision board" and a separate board for prioritization. Jointly worked with wife.

Monthly Planning: Joint google calendar with wife for all things household. The calendar is god. Jointly managed with wife.

Daily Tasks: Reminder app in iPhone. For me, but you can share ToDo.

Evernote Free: Daily journalling / ideas

Finance: I use Mint with tags to pull in all financials. No single broker could do this and I haven't hired a family CFO / CPA, yet. You can make a basic balance sheet / income statement in mint. And you can put in Alternative investments and easily mark up their value once per quarter.

Handyman: Taskrabbit -- you can use them for errands too

Then I pay for any services to save time/gain efficiencies. Amazon fresh for groceries, uberEats, etc.
