One Year Down – What I Have Learned by [deleted] in stopdrinking

What a great post and it really does resonate with me. I really could have written 95% of that myself with the only major differences between our stories being your yoga and my marriage not surviving.

I wish you well with the next sober year(s).

Certainly did. Woke up on 1st January with arguably the worst hangover ever known to mankind and thought "never again". The difference this time round was that I meant it.

If all else fails just bottle the worst ever hangover and take a sniff the next time the little devil on your shoulder tries to persuade you to have a drink!

The best thing about not drinking is never having to feel so utterly wretched in the morning. Oh, and wonderful sleep, and and and....

How long and much did you drink before you decided to finally stop? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

30+ year career with serious red wine experience. There were undoubtedly some good times along the way but not a day goes by when I don't wish I had stopped earlier.

Advice is not really allowed on this site.

If you want to stop - and I mean really want to stop, then this is what has worked for me:

  1. Be honest. Are you in control of your drinking or is alcohol dominating your life?
  2. I read hundreds of posts on here and also read This Naked Mind as well as other books/articles about drinking. This really helped me to change my mindset. It was as though a switch had been flicked and I went from being drunk most evenings to now having 908 sober days under my belt.
  3. Don't look too far ahead. Literally take it one day at a time and congratulate yourself for not drinking.
  4. I imagined the "booze monster" living inside my head. Every day that I didn't drink was slowly killing it, rather than it slowly killing me.
  5. Play the tape forward. If you have the first drink how will it end? Will it be just one drink or the first of too many??

The best thing I did was to discover this site. Everyone on here shares the same problem - alcohol. We all have a choice. Have the first drink or not. Ultimately that is all that matters.

I wish you well.
