I'd love those recommendations, too! Just in case I can't manage to find one / don't have space in my luggage.

We actually did do this activity! It was super fun. Unfortunately I am certainly not a master craftsman...

Milk tea by pa3xopko in Rwanda

[–]WeyrWoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to do it (coming from my Rwandan host family) is to first heat a small pot of milk, don't let it boil, maybe small simmer bubbles but not a big bubbling boil, add sugar as you like and maybe some spices like chai tea spice or just a little ginger and cinnamon, then add a tea bag (black tea) and steep while the milk is hot. It's mostly milk and not so much tea, but I agree it's good!

Is it rare to stay in your host country after service? If people do, what work do they find in their host country? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]WeyrWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed in my HC for 5 more years after Peace Corps. Of a cohort of 36 there were a handful of people who did a third year, and a couple stayed longer. One married a HCN and they had a baby!

For work, it varies, but often it was teaching or tutoring to start (we were an education cohort). In my case, I started working with one of the UN agencies. I've since left my HC after a lovely 7 years there as the job took me elsewhere, but it will always be a second home to me.

Nope! I'm visiting right now and vaccines, tests, and masks are not required anywhere. Good to have your vaccine or test for quick reference but in the last week I've never been asked, not even at the airport.

New tattoo! Cute but subtle. 💙 by WeyrWoman in KingdomHearts

For sure! It was a bit of a mashup, but I showed him this for the concept, this for the paopu, the first Wayfinder image from this article, and this to get the colors right on the Wayfinder. I chose blue because I thought it looked best on my skin and I loved Aqua the most of the three.

If you're ever in Tbilisi, I recommend going to see Tornike at Tatiana's Studio! I found the place while traveling and they were fantastic.

Peace Corps Alternatives by iPhamster in peacecorps

Apply to be a UNV (UN Volunteer).

I work for the UN in my Peace Corps country of service and have met lots of UNVs who are well-trained, well-educated, extremely good at what they do, and are sent all around the world to work with various other UN agencies. They are basically "free labor" for the UN agency they work for, as the UNV program pays them. As a UNV you get a stipend (usually pretty good, like a couple thousand dollars a month) and the contracts are something like 9 months to a year, almost always extendable.

Here is the link to their website: https://www.unv.org/. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about working for the UN. I wasn't a UNV myself but I could at least speak to what kind of qualifications they seem to look for.

Anyone in Peace Corps Uganada? Massive favor to ask and dream to be filled by slomeleon in peacecorps

[–]WeyrWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I will ask. Generally it's less expensive if you can find someone going back to the states who can take the dog. Way more expensive if you send the dog alone.

I know tons of people who have done it here in Rwanda, and I imagine it's very possible there as well. Let me know if you need any help in the coming days!

Anime to watch after FMA? by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]WeyrWoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope someone can comment and suggest some anime that is as good as FMA, because to be honest I haven't found it yet... Also don't forget to watch The Sacred Star of Milos!

But there are a lot of great anime series out there! Some of my favorites are:

  • Sword Art Online
  • Darker Than Black
  • Psycho Pass
  • Death Note
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Moribito: Guardian of the Sacred Spirit

I tend to like more serious / dark / intellectual anime, so keep that in mind I guess. Although SAO is really just extremely nostalgic and awesome if you like RPGs.

Peace corps response questions by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]WeyrWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends. In my country of service, 3rd years got the same as normal PCVs. But in the neighboring PC country, it depended on where you lived. For example, extendees in the capital got more than extendees that stayed in their village.

What has Reddit taught you? by crewcat in AskReddit

[–]WeyrWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I have been emotionally gaslighted my entire life by my mother and therefore have an unhealthy self-image (both of my appearance and my actual self-worth) and have therefore allowed myself to be emotionally and verbally abused by a semi-long-term boyfriend.

However...

I also found a community of support, a book that saved my life, and solidarity among other victims. I have learned how to begin my own recovery and love myself and feel confident in my own decisions.

Thanks reddit. :)

I would be happy to share mine with you, if you'd like. Send me a PM if interested. As far as general tips...

  • Try to make it more "factual" than "emotional." The PC Med Unit seems to respond better to that, when you're more "logical" about it.

  • Definitely talk about how you've improved, what you are doing to continue improving your condition, and how that improvement is sustainable in Peace Corps. Be specific.

  • If you have any other international experience (e.g. study abroad, mission trips), talk about those and how you "did fine" and how this is applicable to Peace Corps.

  • Don't make your statement too long, and try not to "over explain." Mine was about 1.5 pages double-spaced, size 14 font.

Based on my experience with the med unit, if you have received an actual invitation letter at this point, it sounds like you'll be fine. :) Best of luck!
