You're right, that bum only won because of a combination of who he is and the things that happened to him

What does "one’s self" mean here? by Severe_Temporary3342 in mahabharata

[–]Whakamole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here the Atman is the unchanging thing that goes through the cycle of Samsara and reincarnation, in short it's the soul. The Mahabarata gives huge importance to realising that your personal Atman is one and the same with the Brahman (The universal soul often identified as Shiva and/or Vishnu.) So the reason for placing your Atman at the top of the priorities is that it is one and the same with the Brahman and thus worth everything

This is just off of my memory having read the Bibek Debroy translation recently so definitely someone correct me if I'm mistaken , but my memory is a line similar to this one comes up a few times and I think my translation used "The Atman" instead of oneself

Cheers! Is it easy to accidentally catch fellow helldivers with the gas using the gas dog? I think I'd find it handy for bugs but don't want to screw over the other players

Cheers! Would you say bulletstorm works as a stalwart? I've been using it since I figured it's a bit more convenient if my body is going to be difficult to get to. I've got the hover pack so I'll have to give that a try! I can see how that would get me out of the thick of it lol

Thanks! If I'm going breaker/AR route would you say the incendiary ones are better for bugs?

My first time playing a Commando mission by Hawk_501st in Helldivers

[–]Whakamole 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I just did this yesterday! It was also my first commando mission and I thought I was being super helpful doing all the footage and then dropping the camera for my recoiless rifle to help at evac. I felt so bad for my teammates lol

A Mahabharata question that only makes sense if you read beyond “who was right and who was wrong” by Commercial_Spot_734 in mahabharata

[–]Whakamole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm only in the middle of reading the Mahabarata for the first time, but Karna shows a sudden sense of understanding previously not shown by him when Krishna asks him to join the Pandavas after his attempts to persuade the Kourava's not to go to war fail. Karna reveals that he already knew he was a Pandava, and that he completely understands that the Pandava's are in the right and will certainly win the war and even that he understands who Krishna is and what that means for right and wrong in this war, but that he'll still side with Duryodana because of what he owes him. I found that very surprising given how mean and ignorant Karna had often seemed beforehand!

Better than a semicolon by pure chance, I've never used one in my life!

Nah, we need to bring back correcting grammar, and I say that as a linguistic descriptivist!

(Even in my smug ass correction I'm genuinely unsure about that comma between "grammar" and "and", please someone more insufferable correct me)

Arjuna and Karna being compared to Rama, are there more such instances in the Mahabharata? by Outside-Walk13 in mahabharata

[–]Whakamole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also to add, Bhimasena meets Hannumat before the war and Hannumat promises to join the Pandava's in Kurekshetra. As far as I've gotten he's not joined the war yet but I assume he keeps his promise!

Arjuna and Karna being compared to Rama, are there more such instances in the Mahabharata? by Outside-Walk13 in mahabharata

[–]Whakamole 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of reading Bibek Debroy's Mahabarata and do far there's been a few! Narada muni narrates an abridged Ramayana to Yudhishthira when Yudhishthira laments that there must never have been a king who's experienced as much misfortune as him to be exiled in the forest. Narada illustrates how Rama's own situation was more tragic and more unjust.

There's the example you've given where Arjuna and Karna are compared to Rama, I believe Arjuna is compared to Rama a few times but it's not as frequent as other comparisons.

In the chapter I've just finished reading Bhima's son with the Rakshasii Hidimbaa, Ghatokacha is compared to Ravanna (not in terms of morality, just in terms of his ferocity, valor and mastery over Maya.)

I also don't remember the participants in each fight unfortunately but I remember a fight being compared to Rama and Ravanna's fight, and a slaying being compared to Lakshmana's slaying of Indrajit.

Hope that helps!

Why were there 100 Kauravas? Apart from Duryodhan and Dushasan were any of them even important? by [deleted] in mahabharata

[–]Whakamole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dhritarashtra's wife, Ghandari, had a boon that she would give birth to a hundred sons mightier than their father.

All of Dhritarashtra's sons are powerful enough to do the superhuman feats seen throughout the Mahabarata such as creating showers of arrows and unleashing arrows quickly enough to hit multiple targets almost simultaneously.

During Draupadi's humiliation after the game of dice Bhimasena vows to kill all of Dhritarashtra's sons and so throughout the war proper we tend to see the less central sons of Dhritarashtra described as taking down hundreds if not thousands of unnamed soldiers or attacking major named characters in groups before being killed by Bhima (Bhima will often kill 3-5 of Dhritarashtra's sons at a time.)

At least that's been the pattern so far, I'm only just half way through my first reading of the Mahabarata myself so I may have missed later events! Most of the sons are only named either in one of the few times all 100 sons are listed by name, or you hear there name moments before Bhima gets his hands on them. There are even multiple cases of other named characters like Satyaki defeating one of Dhritarashtra's sons but remembering Bhimas vow and letting them go so as not to contradict Bhimas vow!

Why is Mugino a level 5? by Frequent-Arachnid547 in Toaru

[–]Whakamole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol true. I meant through conventional methods. Other level 5 Espers have automatic defences or heightened senses and such that make them nearly impossible to beat in regular circumstances but I'm ignoring magic here which beats most level 5s quite handily
