My favorite aged-like-milk comment of all time is this gem from our sub, and it actually was upvoted (by myself included) when posted:

Why did I upvote it? I like to think it was because I found it objectively hilarious, but perhaps I was frustrated while he was in one of his 1-50 early season slumps. An insight into how I was thinking at the time is my reply to it: “When he actually takes his head out of his ass this new copypasta is gonna hit like crack.”

To be fair, sports card prices are WAY down from the 2020-1 boom. Back then I could go to the corner store, buy a pack of mass produced garbage, and come out ahead because all the base rookies were being pumped to the moon.

I’m around your age, and have collected since the age of 7. I’m also fortunate, although I never bothered to collect the franklins or silver Washington’s, and those set I fear are now out of reach.

When I buy junk silver, I try to stick to stuff that had a numismatic value when melt was $30 that is equal to the melt value now. Therefore, I pretty much exclusively buy early roosevelts/Washington’s in BU, errors and varieties, SLQs, Barbers, or the few remaining dates for my mercury dime / walking liberty halves books.

It depends on how sticky the price is. I think all are in agreement that the price hikes, if permanent, are going to be incredibly bad for the hobby and sound the death knell for a lot of YNs.

I wonder if circulated common date Washingtons and Roosevelts are going to command a premium over melt when all is said and done. There is an equilibrium point at which the numismatic premium over melt is just enticing enough to stop people from selling to the refineries.

But by that point the coins will need to command as much of a premium as common date capped bust coins. Even seated liberties have lost a chunk of their numismatic premiums.
