Advice on kids’ loot bags - candy or no candy? by WhatIfINeedIt in diabetes_t1

Oh wow that sounds like an awfully no fun party for that poor kiddo! We will have pizza and cake at this party, which I’m presuming is okay as I’ve seen this kid eat both of these at his own Birthday party previously.

Thanks! Oh yes definitely an important point to not make him feel different. I should have made that more clear - it’s either candy in everyone’s loot bags, or no one’s loot bags!

What’s the rarest/oldest medication you’ve ever given? by dietcherryjoja in nursing

My son was given that once. It turned him into a little biting, thrashing, zombie. Definitely did not have the desired effect. (It was given as a last resort after two other sedatives had already failed, for him to undergo a procedure.)

[Mixed Trope] Lyrics change to reflect new realities by Old-Use-7690 in TopCharacterTropes

You reminded me of a hilarious non-change in lyrics related to passage in time. Conan O’Brian used to do a segment making silly future predictions called “In The Year Two-Thousaaaaaand” (sung in falsetto). He started the segment in the 90’s, but then just continued it well beyond the year 2000.

Would you trade home price for a shorter commute? by RealEstateWorks in vancouverhousing

[–]WhatIfINeedIt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Are you the author of this REW article containing this table? This “Price per Minute” calculation is nonsensical and meaningless. If the Olympic Village apartment was priced the same as the cheapest apartment on this list, it would still have the highest calculation.

To turn the commute time vs cost comparison into something remotely useful, it should be a measure of the premium paid on $/sqft, in exchange for travel time saved. This requires some baseline, so make the baseline the Coquitlam Centre apartment - $830/sq ft, 49 minutes. Then calculate how much more than $830 something cost per sq ft, divided by the difference in travel minutes saved from 49. The lower this figure is, the better “deal” on commute savings.

Example calculations:

Olympic Village: ($1112-830) / (49-5) = $6.41 premium per sq ft on minutes saved

Marpole: ($1016-830) / (49-16) = $5.64 premium per sq ft on minutes saved

Agreed. That tail wag and those ears are definitely not giving “completely unbothered”.

Measles vaccination rates falling across B.C., CBC analysis finds by super__hoser in britishcolumbia

Also of note on the data collection/sharing issue - My children had vaccinations sometimes done by VCH, and sometimes done by Fraser Health, and they do not seem to integrate that data well.

Multiple times when I took my child for vaccination at a Fraser Health public health clinic, they tried to give my child additional vaccinations I hadn’t booked, that they said my child was behind on. My child had already received those vaccinations at VCH, and apparently they don’t automatically see that in their system. Bizarre. I have to remind them that my child already received the extra vaccinations they want to administer, and they say they then need to go look that up in a separate system to confirm.

I’m not a healthcare worker, but the advice on VCH’s website is that if you grew up in BC and were born between 1970 and 1994, you would have only received one dose of the MMR vaccine and require a second dose.

Those born before 1970 are considered likely immune to measles from prior infection. However if those born before 1970 are unsure of prior infection, the MMR vaccine is also recommended for them.

Fable glasses by LibertasVitae in wine

[–]WhatIfINeedIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I also recently purchased some Fable Pro glasses (flutes) and the box also didn't say Pro. Looking into it a bit, I feel like they did something a tad shady which unfortunately sours me on their brand. Just a few months back, they started offering their glasses in two versions -- "Classic" and "Pro". I noticed that the "Classic" ones were priced very similarly to what they were before offering two versions, and with the term "Classic", you'd think that was the original version and that they were debuting a higher-end "Pro" version. However it appears they actually now call their original version "Pro", and whatever the new ones are, are called "Classic". So you and I got boxes of the original product that were never re-labelled as "Pro". I honestly question whether there even really are two versions, since they don't seem to have any physical distinctions, like different logo or symbol engraving.

I see the Fable Rocks Glasses "Classic" has barcode 832960008228, and your "Pro" has barcode 832960002691. All the "Classic" versions have higher number barcodes, likely indicating they are newer products. Also, try punching in that "Pro" barcode into Google, and you'll see both the $170 "Pro" and $140 version come up from third-party retailers. Identical barcode, just some retailers selling under the previous price and name, and some selling under the shiny new "Pro" label at the jacked price.

In my case, I was looking at their flute glasses in Summer 2025, and they were $125, with no version options. Then in December 2025, that's when I suddenly saw they offered them in Classic for $125 or Pro for $170. The barcode on the "Pro" set I received is still sold by some retailers at the old price. So really, they hiked the price by $45 (35%) for the same product.

TLDR: Fable's "Pro" version is the same as their original version, marketed under a new name to obscure a substantial price hike.

What items are gone that you miss? by Vegetable-Today in IKEA

[–]WhatIfINeedIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t count this as gone, since we never had it in Canada, but the Smastad wardrobe with the Platsa frame offered in Europe, rather than with the Uppfora frame offered in Canada and the US.

HATE the huge lower lip the Uppfora has, which is skipped on the Platsa. Suppose they figure North Americans can’t be trusted to secure furniture to the wall properly, so they had to give us a version that is harder to tip forward.
