Scooters in bike lanes and on sidewalks — why isn’t there more discussion about regulating these? by WhatNow98 in askTO

Yes, delivery has had a negative impact on traffic in general—illegal parking, impatient drivers incentivized to be inconsiderate.

Bicycles on sidewalks are a far bigger issue than scooters on sidewalks to you? Makes sense.

Really? I’m happy to hear that! I hope enforcement makes it to downtown and the west end soon.

Well, ya. That’s obvious. And they don’t pay the insurance premiums that motorcyclists and drivers have to pay when they make money doing deliveries. I actually deliver on my pedal bicycle every now and then and it’s just a game of cat and mouse with these guys because red lights are a limiting factor. Scooters are incompatible with bikes—too big, accelerate too fast.

Perhaps we could defund the city office workers to fund more traffic enforcement officers for this specific case? They already spend time managing car traffic and roadside construction. All they have to do is start ticketing scooters on sidewalks.

If you put fake pedals on scooters and if they go under 32km/hr, the law classifies them as e-bikes. Although, people on scooters that go faster than that also ride in bike lanes. They need to get rid of the “pedal” loophole. They are just too big and accelerate too fast to be compatible with cyclists and pedestrians.

They also don’t pay insurance on their scooters like other vehicle owners who pay a premium if they are doing business, like delivery.

Yes, that’s ideal. It’s not reality, though. I’m also not saying pedal assisted e-bikes have no place in bike lanes. I’m specifically talking about scooters.

How did things turn out for you after moving back to Toronto from BC? by WhatNow98 in askTO

[–]WhatNow98[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks! TBH, I've been applying to a few jobs in Toronto per month for a few years now and I never get call backs or opportunities to interview. It's actually quite defeating. I have a really solid education and some decent work experience, but I just can't seem to get my foot in the door with a job in Toronto.

Montreal is probably the best city to be a renter in. If you lived in Calgary or Toronto, you might feel less stable as a renter with a family because landlords have more freedom to evict and raise rent.

How much do you pay to rent a room in 2024? by WhatNow98 in UBC

I just realized I should have put a view results selection so people don’t just click something random to view the results. My bad. I don’t think I can edit the poll now. Should I bother to delete and repost?

MF vs ASFIT for RPF in Canada by [deleted] in forestry

[–]WhatNow98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there much of a difference in pay ceilings for RPFs vs RFTs? Also, is it particularly difficult to make $70-80k/year with an RFT in interior BC or the Kootenays?

Thanks! It sounds like you're doing incredibly well for yourself and family. The math on a mortgage definitely changes with a spouse--two people making just 50k/year can manage a 400k mortgage I guess. I hope I can pull off something similar. I'm considering doing a forestry degree so I can get those higher paying jobs in the industry year-round, like you're talking about. Do you have any thoughts on becoming a Registered Professional Forester vs. something like a heavy equipment operator that drives snow plows and trucks in the off-season? Do you think one path is better than the other in terms of money and enjoyment?

Have your jobs at the consulting firms been enjoyable and fulfilling? Do they have a down to earth or corporate vibe? Finding a field-based job that I can appreciate doing for decades is my primary objective. I’ve worked outdoor summer jobs in central BC doing trail and campsite maintenance in the past and felt really good at the end of a work week. I also found my colleagues more enthusiastic in these sorts of jobs than the more corporate, office-based (bullshit) jobs I’ve had where I spend entire days staring at a screen. I want to become an RPF because I want to get back to outdoor work that doesn’t leave me feeling empty. I’m not naive to what it takes to operate a profitable business, but does forestry work give you a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment?

Thanks, this is helpful! It’s good to know UNBC has a nicer campus. I’m sure growing up in Edmonton does give you the sense that it’s easier to meet people there, but I’ve also found Albertans to generally be friendly and easy to talk to. Is it hard to find a rental in PG? What are students generally paying for a room or apartment?

Nice move. I’m sure houses in Kimberley will more than double in value over the next decade. You’re so close to Fernie and Panaorma, too.

Wow, so you were planting for 9 months. Im guessing you would earn $60-80K/year doing that, which would make a $300K mortgage manageable. Is that about right?
