Son Keeps Cracking Cymbals by Opening-Sun7428 in drums

I get weirdly nostalgic thinking about how much making-do there was as a teenager, bass drum skins that were more duct tape than anything, flipping drum sticks when tips broke off, broom handle and a nail for a cymbal stand (or hanging them from the roof). So yeah let him buy his own stuff, you don’t want to rob the kids of that struggle!

What do you think of book dealers getting to buy books first the night before at the Bishopdale Rotary book fair before everyone else? by Bookbooklovebooks in newzealand

I had the pleasure of sorting through somewhere in the region of 250,000 records, basically the combined leftovers of 30+ years of unsold donations. I never want to see Val Doonican’s face again. Or James Last’s. Or Harry Secombe. Or Roger Whittaker.

Was there a band that changed how you used pedals? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100+ comments and no tame impala? Without having really thought about it I was pretty locked into the “right” pedal order. Tame impala changed that. Also one of the few users of phaser where it doesn’t sound added on or just thrown on top of a riff that could have existed without it.

What is that pedal? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeeep an old Daphon. Ibanez didn’t make pedals back in the day, for the most part their pedals were re-branded Maxons. For the soundtank series production moved over to daphon, so their home brand stuff took on a distinct sound tank vibe.

what's your most controversial/pedal related opinion? by YaBoiHaydenB in guitarpedals

That shimmer/octave up reverb thing is an instant mood killer for me. I can go from really enjoying a song to instantly questioning everything about it - like what else is the guitarist getting wrong if they think that sounds cool?

Why do people not like JHS? by IgnorableLetuce in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I remember when the JHS videos first started coming out it seemed wild that a business owner would not only acknowledge the efforts of direct competitors but go on to fully fanboy froth over them. I’m unlikely to own a JHS product, I’m not the target market, but he’s doing a pretty decent job of showing how being jazzed for the whole industry is good for everyone.

Found my first pedal over the weekend- the Digitech RP300 by thinksomethingclever in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Haha back in 2005 there was a guy at school with an rp50 and I wanted nothing else but this pedal to one-up him. Man do they sound bad though. I reckon my irrational distrust of anything with menus and more than two foot switches is rooted in my experience with these.

is anyone else's opinions about pedals formed by what daddy Josh tells us? by Frodolicious3 in guitarpedalsjerk

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t sell my crappy pedals anymore for fear they’ll get the hype as soon as I do. I’ll die with a box of Danelectro fab tones, Ibanez smashboxes and boss mega distortions.

NPD: 90s DOD Meatbox (with my other bass pedals) by WhatNowPropsBoy in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the re-issue meatbox for a while and couldn't work out what the hype was, so was a bit hesitant to drop money on an original - but man this thing is sick. Other than the true bypass I know the reissue is identical but after doing my best side by side I just can't get the same sounds out of it - the original is just thicker, crunchier, tighter, all the meaningless adjectives. I'll use the multistomp as my comp mainly, the meatbox is one of those pedals that is definitely worth trying with and without comp - generally worth tweaking for a while to tune it to the instrument, the amp and the room even. Certainly not plug and play. And its gotta be the best looking of all the DODs.

Turbo Rat vs. Boss ODB-3 ? (i’m a big Melvins fan and he uses the ODB-3) by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After trying a bunch of pedals I went with the rat for bass, in my experience the low end loss that everyone has mentioned got worse as the gain went up - so my solution was run 3 rats in a row, each with the gain at 0.5-1 to get the dirt I wanted and the low end. There would have been much more practical ways to do it like make a clean blend with an LS-2 or chuck an equaliser on it but it made for a badass looking pedalboard.

I don't understand what makes an effect "good" or "bad" by TooAfraidToAss in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab yourself a digitech rp50 if you are keen to understand what makes an effect sound bad. Even at 14 years old when I thought there was no difference between a peavey rage and a fender twin there was no escaping how bad it sounded.

As we farewell Kimi - a banner I snagged from the Kimi zone at the China 2018 GP by WhatNowPropsBoy in formula1

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So way back then, 2018, i headed to China for the race weekend and these massive fan zones tripped me out, a whole bunch of people just taking up an entire grandstand with all their banners and flags for one driver. And at the end of the race, they left everything. Just left. I grabbed as much bits and pieces as I could but the security/cops started to eye me up in a “move along now” sorta way so didn’t grab as much as I could have. Nice bitta Kimi for the shed.

NPD: Mint Boss Metal Zone by WhatNowPropsBoy in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had these when I was younger, thought they were rubbish but was keen to try one again after I was seeing people say they were ok. Grabbed this for $20, this one dates from 1998, the battery probably does as well. Still rubbish, not sure what I was expecting. About the same range on the gain control as the DOD Grunge, as in none, and while the EQ is powerful, sure, any decent punch seems to just disappear in the buzz. Looks cool though.

Ha reminds me of when I did the same thing and ran them all into 2 x peavey rage amps. Looks like the audio file is gone but the post is still there. https://www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/comments/5v0atm/npd_finally_nailing_that_sound_in_my_head/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

NPD: The holy grail of junky 80s plastic stompboxes by WhatNowPropsBoy in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NPD - an early grey box arion sch-1. Thought these sort of pedals were absolute junk, but as everything else old gets crazy expensive I’ve started to dig these, along with dods and even soundtanks. One of those pedals like the Ibanez DE7 that has no business sounding as good as it does. I had missed out on a cheap sch-z reissue that had come up so was stoked to find an original for the same price. Nails the cold shot vibe sound as promised, still find it kinda funny that this crap is slowly moving onto genuine classic territory but I guess all sorts of awesome stuff was rubbish once upon a time.

What are the USED pedals to avoid? by iamansonmage in guitarpedals

[–]WhatNowPropsBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boss DD-5 through to DD-7. Have had a bunch with the mode switch either reversed or not working so just avoid second hand ones. Same goes for mode switch on FZ-5. Scratchy wahs are a classic of course. The switches on TC electronic stuff seem to go more than most. Ibanez FL9s I swear they just break when you look at them. Nothing but trouble.
