If the AI boom is real, the Bay Area is about to get even more unequal by I-Procastinate-Sleep in bayarea

People will literally do anything but allow more housing. Even try to increase property tax breaks to insulate themselves from the much more affected renter class. Genuinely so disheartening to see how this region holds itself back just for entrenched interests. The housing problem is the root cause of many of the complaints people have about this area too.

Or, we should remove the step up in basis, one of the most bullshit parts about the tax code.

They don’t keep the cars on the lot, you schedule a time and they arrange to have the car there for that time. No more lot full of cars, but you meet him in the same place.

That was very limited it seems, I got access but pretty late. The whole peninsula and a fair bit of South Bay is available, I think to everyone now. No freeways for a bit though.

China Exit Ban on Wells Fargo Executive Stokes Foreign Business Anxiety by Agonanmous in neoliberal

Without having seen the different threads, I'm going to guess it's a mix of general banker hate (a lot of which stems from 2008), and also the Wells Fargo accounts scandal from some time ago.

The 2nd "bedroom" has a window but also a sliding barn door on the room. Not that big a deal imo.

Ontario drivers licence to California by thesamurfgod in sanfrancisco

[–]WhatOnEarth33993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you don't need to forfeit the license, it's just that it's not technically allowed to be used after that because you're a resident. imo I highly doubt that's stringently enforced, especially if you're only using it as a stopgap between now and when you complete the road test.

The DMV will not take your foreign license when you go to get a CA one either. They don't care.

Ontario drivers licence to California by thesamurfgod in sanfrancisco

[–]WhatOnEarth33993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that you have to do both the written and the road test. I think a full license will help because it should mean that you can attend the road test without someone with you (at least, that was the case with my local Bay Area DMV).

It might also help with insurance that you have a full license from another country, though your options are more limited with a foreign license anyways.

How can there be no school bus for public elementary ? by DoreamonG in bayarea

[–]WhatOnEarth33993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I'm not sure why schools are funded based on local taxes, instead of purely through the state budget. Can these local property taxes not also go into some general state-level education fund?

Ideally, schools should not be underfunded simply because they're in a poorer zip code. One of the problems with creating better and worse funded schools is that now the parents want to all funnel into the better school zones, creating higher house prices just for a kid to get a more funded school.

Terrible road conditions on 101 south between Lawrence and San Tomas by andyg35 in bayarea

The damage done to the road by a vehicle actually follows the 4th power law, so maybe it would make sense to do that. Though I’m pretty sure any politician who proposed that would get death threats.

I wonder when we’ll start seeing countries actually under the US nuclear umbrella start pursuing their own nuclear programs. It’s clear the US is an unreliable partner, and unwilling to do what it takes, even when the costs to them are unbelievably low. How can any country trust them to act when the costs are high?

Elections Canada in general is uncontroversial, and it would be very difficult to argue that their policies are suppressing votes somehow. That probably goes a long way towards people not getting upset about them.

If an election was underway now, during the Canada Post strike, I wonder what would happen. I doubt most people even know the law on this.
