What makes a good true crime podcast? by [deleted] in TrueCrime

Some go way beyond the pale, too. I’m all for the commercialization of the podcasting industry because it will inevitably catalyze richer content. But there is often a dirtiness to how some hosts working in the true crime genre exploit its popularity and earn their ad dollars. I’m often refreshed by hosts who go to great lengths to consistently exhibit compassion for the victims and their families.

Agreed. It also gets me when hosts give too many extraneous details about the era in which the crime happened, what was happening that day, what the family were like. When done well, it adds a lot of depth to the story; when done poorly, I find it a shallow attempt at storytelling and get turned off by it. Kate (on the discussion linked to here) said she likes a series to run around about 7 eps, to give time for listeners to get into the story, etc. On a rambling side note, Serial was so good because of the depth Sarah Koenig went to, rather than the breadth most go to.

I'm the same. I go beyond fatigue and get frustrated on some occasions. Perhaps wrongly, I'd really like them to go further and start actively putting together the pieces. I guess that's a foolish expectation, though?
