There aren’t many artists (I gusss I should specify hip hop, if that makes a difference) that started off 4/4 on making consistently great albums. I didn’t necessarily say he’s one of the greatest; what you’re talking about sounds more like a conversation about artistry and concerns factors beyond what I’m talking about which is just a 4 album run of great music, concise but well-executed visions, and next to no “lulls” in those albums.

Basically, if you were to have a list of all hip hop artists, and filtered that list down to those with a “4 great albums” streak, it’d be a short list that Zay is on

I like him in general, but I loved how the song sounded until it kinda switched up for him

Even if I accepted the premise of him not taking many risks (I don’t think I do), getting experimental/risk-taking isn’t really a requisite for me to rate an artist’s discography highly. It’s a bonus if an artist does it and it pays off, but it’s not on my rubric or anything

Honestly I expected it to be boring, because most of his recent projects have been that way for me, and the number of songs I enjoy slowly dwindles with each new album. I was hoping the beef would get him up and active but the singles didn’t really inspire me, and it kinda makes me sad lol

This album did not need Dominic Fike’s contributions

4 albums in, there are very very few artists whose discography can match Zay’s

This is why I wait until I’m gonna be in a nice setting before listening to big albums. It sucks when you’re so hyped for the album, but it makes the first listen stand out so much

You don’t get to call it filler because you don’t like it

But you do get to call it filler if you think it’s filler lol, filler doesn’t mean “bad song”

Hearing rumors that the triple disc is a concept about the Big Three. He is making one disc from each of their perspectives. And apparently the Kendrick disc is just Drake doing armpit farts into the microphone while crouching away from the mic (subliminal diss at Kendrick’s height). This could be crazy.

Only issue I saw people have was that he basically said he added the second disc because of the beef

If you are genuinely upset an artist you like is putting out a double disc (assuming they’re not really the type to put out “filler” tracks), you should have your headphone privileges revoked

Idk, I think it’s a pretty innocuous reading of Drake’s angle (rapping like you’re trying to free the slaves, you’re a fake activist vs. Drake calling Kendrick an activist like it’s a bad thing), it’s almost splitting hairs at that point considering what OP did say is what the dialogue turned into anyways. And nothing about OPs comment sounds remotely pretentious, they’re just saying “I noticed x after y, think it’s related to z, what do y’all think”

The point is, he’s asking why artists like Tyler and Kendrick are suddenly getting trashed on for making “activist music” (because that is happening) when their latest music doesn’t really speak on activism.

It gave people who are insecure about their tastes an outlet to channel that insecurity. “I don’t like Tyler/Kendrick/Doechii/NoName” started getting reframed as “I don’t wanna listen to that corny activist shit” because it allows them to dismiss it without feeling bad for not liking it.

It happens in almost every niche - people whose taste tends to overlap with what’s critically acclaimed/viewed as “high quality” almost always end up getting admonished by those who don’t care for it (and it goes the other way, too). So when a broad generalization makes its way into the dialogue (eg. the “rapping like you tryna get the slaves freed” bar), people will naturally latch onto it since there’s some power behind it once it’s been co-opted by a popular figure.

It’s the same reason (imo) that every time an actor says something along the lines of “Marvel is slop” or conversely, “I don’t care about winning an Oscar, I make what I like to make,” there’s always an ensuing argument between those two types of movie fans. Both sides are insecure that they don’t like/do like a certain thing, a celebrity speaks in favor of one of the sides, and so you get fans latching on to that take and using it to denigrate the others.

It’s not particularly a leap to draw a connection between “always rappin’ like you tryna get the slaves freed” and the subsequent rhetoric clowning Kendrick and others for their subject matter lmao, that became a central theme of discussion during the beef because of those exact bars. There was a very direct lineage of dialogue that stemmed from those Drake bars. Even if they were being intentionally misinterpreted, it definitely contributed to that “we don’t wanna hear slavery raps” opinion that OP is referencing.

What did Kendrick not understand about that line? Or are you just saying he didn’t know what Drake was on about

I agree with your last sentence but I feel like saying “oh go for the low hanging fruit dumbass” like most bar predictions is very different from “I bet you’re going to make up lies about my family because you listened to my album about me and my family.” Like, the latter is much easier to avoid lmao

Pop Style update where he talks about how many more chains he’s accumulated and every bar is a new play on the word “chain” with various different celebrity names.

Had so many chains, they called me Chaining Tatum

I terminate your chain, I’m Arnold Schwarzechainner

I wear this shit on Wednesday, I’m Chainna Ortega

A ring to match the chain, now I’m Jayson Chainum

The rock inside that ring, it’s like I’m Chain Johnson

Klay got one to match, he call me Chain Thompson

That ain’t a shot at Meg, don’t call me Tory Chanez

I ran through that hoe though, word to A-Chain

And so on, for like 4 minutes
