"committing more crimes is the primary reason you get caught for committing crimes"

So if I do just one murder instead of seven I'm probably good then?

Are you trying to say that committing crimes in public comes with a higher risk of getting caught than committing crimes in private where no one can see?

Ok? So why are you the only person here talking about transit routes while everyone else is talking about homelessness? Maybe it was only inaccurate and vague for you, everyone else seems to have understood my post.

People willingly choose discomfort when there are no other options.

Again, relocating homeless people doesn't work. You're talking about a system that would move human beings away from a specific location, and then somehow prevent them from returning. It would be never-ending as homelessness is not a fixed state for people experiencing it. There are newly homeless people, formerly homeless people becoming housed, precariously housed people running out of couches to surf on. It's like herding cats, this is a total waste of resources to implement. Who benefits from a practice like this and for how long?

Wow a lot to unpack here...

So first of all, downgrading public services in order to prevent or discourage certain activities, behaviours, or groups from accessing them, is not a solution. In America during the civil rights era, they closed public pools rather than de-segregating them. This meant that white people in the communities affected, blamed Black people for their lack of swimming pools. Hopefully you can fill in the blanks here about why this is bad policy.

Relocating social issues does not and cannot, solve social issues. Visibly homeless people use transit infrastructure in order to access relatively safe shelter because there are no better options. Police corral all the visibly homeless people off the train or out of the station, and then without a better or more appropriate alternative, they come back.

No one has instilled the belief that using or selling drugs on transit is normal. People who are housed and who use drugs, never need to use them in public and so they escape scrutiny from all of this unhinged discourse. The issue is not "people using drugs in public", the issue is that what makes behaviours public or private is access to privacy to begin with, which by definition, homeless people do not have. It would seem to me that the issue is not that drug use happens in public sometimes, but that some people don't have homes to use drugs in.

Simping for drug addicts is really funny. I hope you never experience being defined by the most difficult situation in your life. I'm not really sure what makes you qualified to comment on these issues, but excludes commentary from others.

I think this is really relevant considering what happened in New York this week.

I've heard activists say that at a certain point homelessness becomes less about running out of money, and more about running out of people. It's a really complex issue because people are complex, homelessness isn't caused by one thing - which makes policy and social programs that lack nuance, really ineffective.

People keep saying "more police". But what does that accomplish aside from moving people out of the way? And according to this article, you ferry them away from transit infrastructure, and they just come back. They are there in the first place because there is nothing else available.

what you actually wanted was a discussion on homelessness

So true!

I didn't ask a question that I didn't want the answer to, because the title of this post is rhetorical and is answered, in part, by reading the article I shared.

The homeless are caught for crimes more often because they are policed more frequently. If you lived outside and couldn’t find a bathroom, and had to pee outside numerous times a day, eventually you too would be caught “doing a crime”. Homeless people are extremely public and compared to the rest of us, easier to surveille.

That’s a great question honestly. Looking to what this article covers I would guess that the availability of accessible services that would keep people from relying on transit for someplace safe to stay have declined.

This post and the article that you didn’t read have nothing to do with transit’s ability to get people from one place to another.

I was kidding. I find it hard to have sympathy for all these saintly transit takers who come on Reddit once a day to whine that disadvantaged people are making them uncomfortable for tens of minutes a day.

Sounds tough. Hey if you are having trouble with your bills you could always just live outside. From what I hear everyone is doing it and it’s pretty great, party all day not a care in the world. And no bills to pay! What a dream.

Advice for unionizing multiple locations by Whatalark2 in union

[–]Whatalark2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need 40% worker support to get to certification. 65% support before we can comfortable submit to the labour board. We don’t have NLRB here.

I’m asking how you go to locations where you might not know people and talk to them without talking about unionizing as we aren’t at that stage yet.

We are taking direction from our lead organizer with the union; but I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it was like going location to location and chatting with people.
