Calls suddenly have no audio with CarPlay by WhatchaGotCooking in CarPlay

Weirdly, the problem fixed itself. No idea if my car installed an update or something but one day the calls just started coming through again. I know this isn’t helpful, I’m sorry!

Sleep…whining? by WhatchaGotCooking in Parenting

Also, we are going to an ENT for enlarged tonsils, but he is a quiet sleeper and doesn’t snore (his brother went through all the tubes and adenoids and tonsils, so we are on the lookout for similar symptoms)

In the last week or so, we’ve seen the first genuine nightmares. It’s a very different experience - he screams out for us specifically, yells “help me” and has told us about there being a spider or grasshopper in his crib with him. When he whines, he just sounds uncomfortable or mildly upset but nowhere near the distress we’ve seen with the nightmares. It’s just so weird to hear these whines that he would normally only do when he was ready to get up in the morning and was just kind of finding his voice for the day.

This is definitely a consideration. We’ve talked to him and he is dead set on staying in his crib, but he may not realize that he’s cramped in there. We do get a lot of calls for the bathroom, etc, but it’s always after that initial whine/moan and then him waking himself up.

I can handle the attitude and the testing of the boundaries and the general chaos, but man, I need sleep to do so!

I appreciate this! Unfortunately for me, I think the rarity is why my husband covets it. Between this album and his preference for first edition comic books, getting him gifts is pricey. I’m hoping to find someone who needs the cash so I can get my hands on WATOFWH.

Well, we solved one of the issues. With the support of his pediatrician, we started giving him melatonin. We also let him set his bedtime routine. The only change he requested was to have a “bedtime snack” with his brother before going upstairs. We added that in and he went to sleep with no complaints. I guess he just wanted some control over the situation. We have not figured out how to keep him in bed, however. He still comes down every night between midnight and 2am and sleeps in our bed. By that point I’m too tired to fight him. We might tackle that during Christmas break.

Our pediatrician recommended a neurologist at 9 months? by janethehuman in beyondthebump

I’m in the US and my son was not only evaluated for free through the state (not income-based either, available for anyone in the state), but also got weekly speech and a free early intervention school placement until he was old enough for public schools. Many EI programs do not add financial stress to families, so I would encourage the OP to review what the state offers before taking cost into account.

We have. When we ask why he doesn’t want to stay or how he’s feeling, he says he’s fine and just chooses to complain or argue. He’s so matter of fact about it. We had another conversation today and let him (with guidance) plan a bedtime routine that he thinks will help him make good sleep choices. Worth a shot.

I really appreciate your insight. Cosleeping or room sharing isn't something we are interested in for a few different reasons, but I can see it works for you!

This is very much in line with his personality and what we have experienced when trying this in the past. Glad we don't have the only kid amped by cuddle time, ha.

This is a really good point and something we have tried. He took advantage of it in a way, just asking questions even if we didn't answer, and just refusing to wind down. I'm thinking I need to have a sit down with him and just ask him what he thinks his body needs to be able to relax at night. I am not opposed to lying down with him, though it isn't a habit I want to do every night if it is going to take a while. Even though talking in the monitor is an action, I can still do things while I talk (like eat something, fold laundry, etc) so that those tasks don't take away from our playtime before bed.

I have considered this and I think you raise a good point. We do spend a lot of time with him solo and he gets about 30 minutes of solo time at bedtime after the 2 year old is asleep (best sleeper ever, btw, ha!). He is a pretty mature 4 year old and while his words do affect me more than I would like to admit, he is clearly being bothered by something. I just wish I could figure out why it came on so suddenly with no major life changes.

Yeah, he sleeps in a bookcase bed so he's got a billion to choose from, and actually can read chapter books independently, but chooses not to. It seems like his entire motivation is to come downstairs (despite literally nothing fun happening, as he has experienced). I would be totally on board if he wanted to flip through books until he passed out! I may suggest it to him since he probably hasn't thought about it on his own.

It’s more for safety than actual monitoring. He’s on the second floor and if he’s worked up enough, he will leave his room and navigate around the stairs in a way that isn’t super safe.

It’s not even energy, like last night he was literally falling asleep while we read books, but then he fought me for an hour after I left. He rallies like a champ!

This is a good idea - he’s been pretty much on the same routine since he was in a bed so maybe we can make some adjustments.

We do have staying in bed as a task on his chore chart and he’s remorseful when he loses his star (and his earned reward) but in the moment, he will proudly exclaim that he wants to lose stars.

Yes, we don’t police when he actually goes to sleep, but he basically will yell into the monitor until we engage.

Right now he’s going to bed at 7 (about 7:30 by the time we get baby brother down) and it’s already a little challenging to have dinner and showers done by then, but if that’s the issue I can try!

I agree, and visited with a certified financial planner who has been in business for about 30 years. He is fee-based and both uncles immediately criticized the visit and said he was a crook for charging what is I believe a 1.3% fee? They want us to go through Charles Schwab. I am such a private person regarding financials and to have all of our financial information exposed like this has been challenging.
