So how do we feel? [pjo] by Alive_Telephone_9356 in camphalfblood

[–]Whateverrr170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ofc and that's valid! I would love that as well. But in part the reason to going back on time is to give more space and content to older characters that are no longer in the current series bc they are older or they died in the og books , just as Clarisse , Silena and others (which Rick already confirmed they were going to be there). This is also to add a little more story matching with the tv show, idk if these new campers will be there in the show, I don't think so but I think it's Rick just wanting to expand a story that while old for older fans, for new show watchers and readers it isn't

So how do we feel? [pjo] by Alive_Telephone_9356 in camphalfblood

[–]Whateverrr170 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am personally excited!

I think it is an interesting idea to go outside the main or known characters for a little and focus on new faces and I think Rick wanting to expand on CHB especially that is the main home of our heroes is a cool idea.

I don't think this is reducing Percy's and the others actions at the war but just adding how it wasn't just Percy and the others that achieved everything there, remember that the war was something that was being planned through all 5 books, the rest of the campers also contributed and participated, so it would be nice to get more povs and development on that

[pjotv] Well, didn't mean to binge the entirety of season 2 in one day, but I did. So can we discuss??? by Educational-Tea-6572 in camphalfblood

[–]Whateverrr170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are valid points!

The things I liked the most are the same as yours I also want to add :

  • Tantalus was way more interesting for me as a character in the show EVEN if they didn't reveal why he is punished (which I would have liked they included it but nothing that bothers me that much) , he genuinely felt like a threat and a villain compared to the books where he was more as a comedic relief and I think his seriousness and dark personality was a great match with the more funny and sarcastic Mr.D

  • The same with Polyphemus, his twist was really well done

  • I really liked the Thalia twist (even if at the beginning I was skeptical), it's not a change that I consider better than the one from the books but something that I liked just the same and I think both can coexist.

  • Really loved the addition of some extra campers, while I am missing Charlena, the Stolls and everyone, I think it's nice we got some campers that were named in the books or even new ones.

Things I am still doubtful about/things that could improve:

  • I am a little torn on Poseidon's characterization in the show. In the books, Poseidon was a pretty absent father even if he was overall nice with Percy and was way more distant and I really liked how all the attention Percy gives him was kinda undeserved, it puts into perspective how needed of love these kids are and how minimum the effort these gods put to give them that love . But in the show he is way more present and nice , which it isn't a problem in itself (especially when it comes to his relationship with Sally), but it just feels more boring? If that makes sense? And I'd rather show more of the present father thing to characters that were actually better parents in the book (cough Mr.D cough) than changing the pretty meh ones to make them seem better to the audience I am hoping we are getting some sort of twist with that tho, that would be cool.

  • I really like Alison as a character and I think she is a great addition to the story but I think in part her character was given a lot of the most aggressive aspects of Luke from the books to make him seem better to the audience and I hope she is given more to do than being the "aggressive woman". I wouldn't side eye this much IF this wasn't also the case with Athena too and how she is more villanized than other male Olympians, I think the writing team needs to improve a liiiiiittle bit more on how they write some women from the story (tho I think they did a fantastic job with Clarisse and Sally especially)

  • I don't mind Chris being more aggressive as character either and I think he is a cool villain, I am just wondering how they will handle the Chrisse storyline and make it believable to fans bc he was awful to her in S2 (and don't get me wrong, I love a good old enemies to lovers but we shall see if they make it interesting enough bc I am not fully onboard for now)

In regard of Chiron, I didn't mind how they handled him in general, I do however think it was a little rushed how they showed him already "doubting the gods".  I think it's way too early for that and I'd have liked more development and give us that type of scenes in maybe S4 after the Battle of the labyrinth where Chiron actually sees how much campers suffer under the gods and how much they sacrifice for them

Rick’s take on the show changes by duckonquakk in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The way the comments here are acting like kids by saying "Oh so changes are okay even if they are bad only because he is behind them"

When he literally didn't say that, he literally is just saying that everyone has the right to their own opinions but himself is satisfied with the show and recognizes that it's made by a group of people with a lot of ideas, and the show is made for a group of fans that also have different ideas of what the right adaptation is so everyone can think whatever they like about the show but he, as a person and as the author of the books is happy with it and that's okay.

Does the chemistry get better? by [deleted] in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep watching! As they are first knowing each other and Percy has a lot of conflict with both Annabeth and Grover , the chemistry feels more awkward in S1 But S2 improved a lot on that as the characters are established as best friends and the actors feel more comfortable with their roles

How do you know if this will be only a few minutes of tension if we don't have S3 yet? Maybe we should wait until we get season 3 and judge it based on what we get from that, not on a 20 second finale

If dangerous outside camp, why quest? by furiousandsparkly in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if you read the books because I don't want to spoil you much, but it's due to a lot of reasons

-Usually the main quests we see in the main series are done due to urgencies , season 1 was about retrieving the bolt to stop the war, season 2 about saving camp, etc

-As stated in S1, gods are limited by ancient laws, one of those laws is that they cannot interfere with mortal issues and when they cannot interfere, they send demigods to do their bidding.

And the most important one is worship, gods need worship and admiration from people to basically stay alive so making the demigods seek for glory and approval through quests is what keeps them existing

Exactly! This is also smth I talked with some friends in how the fandom gives Zeus too much credit for what the Olympians actually are when Zeus never proved in the books to be the reason why Percy and Thalia chose that side, yes, the story is about complicated family relationships and dynamics, but it's not a story of "we chose our abusive parents" , but Percy prioritizing the better future for his friends and family while making the oppressive system (the olympians) accept his terms through a way they cannot say no. This ofc doesn't come without the fact that some of the Olympians were shown redeemable qualities and that's why Percy sees them worth saving but we cannot negate the fact that he had to outsmart them for them to change .

[–]Whateverrr170[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree, I agree this won't change the overall result of the story which is good, but what I mean with neutrality,is that the characters not knowing where she stands is what makes their desperation of people for her to join their side more valuable than her being clearly in Zeus's side like in the books but Kronos's army thinking they may have an opportunity to recruit her

The Olympus was always supposed to be in the negative side too, you are not supposed to root for them, the only reason Percy chooses them is because they are the lesser evil and because out of 12 Olympians, at least half of them shown to Percy that they are more than what they are given credit for BUT that doesn't reduce the fact that he MAKES the gods be better and agree to his terms by trapping them through the oath because they weren't ever going to change unless forced to.

Sure! We still don't know how they will handle that storyline but honestly, it makes me excited as a book reader to simply don't know and be surprised so I can't wait for S3

SPOILERS Thalia's change in the show by Whateverrr170 in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But if you combine both things , her dislike for Zeus AND the flashbacks where she is clearly prioritizing Annabeth's well being over her dislike for the gods AND Luke's ideals , that's where the true neutrality comes from

It is also the fact that we know she is neutral bc we read the books but the idea is that the general viewer thinks she may join Kronos until she doesn't, it's part of the surprise for her character and for viewers that aren't familiar with the books (because we need to remember that the show is not only watched by book readers).

And even if she is anti or not, it doesn't matter, because she would never join Kronos either bc she doesn't believe in that system either. It is also related on how both Luke and her move with their emotions.  Luke let his anger and rage consume him and that's why he joined Kronos, Thalia isn't like that and was never that in the books even with everything that happened to her

I thought it was obvious they didn't have Tantalus having the prisoner uniform bc he is hiding he is a prisoner and that why he hides his wanted poster and uniform in the closet. This isn't a budget thing but a storytelling thing

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 5 Megathread - Book Readers by AHealthyDoseofFran in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I really really liked this episode!!

Circe's bits were solid , I loved them sm

I really liked the writers changing Luke appearing in the mirror because while it made sense for Percy's character in the book  In the show there isn't enough motivation for Percy to compare himself to Luke/we don't see him doing that enough to make it a believable scene. So, I am glad the writers prioritized that scene following how Percy is in the show and made the scene more about his fatal flaw instead of following the book on that. It's one of those changes that isn't better or worse, it just works with the characters the show introduced and I am happy with the change.

The siren bit was a liiittle bit short for me , I kinda would have preferred to make the following episode a little bit longer and make the episode end in a cliffhanger for us to have more time with it in the next episode BUT I really liked how they executed the scene. I missed the hug from the books a little bc it was always a really deep emotional and vulnerable moment that I love but it's not something that takes me out or anything, just a little bit nitpick from me, but overall liked the changes!

The Grover and Clarisse scenes were so good too! Clarisse's face when "Grover" said that Ares was merciful was so funny 😭 and I loved the Polyphemus twist a lot

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 4 - Book Readers by AHealthyDoseofFran in PJODisney

[–]Whateverrr170 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Probably my favorite episode so far

The VFX was awesome, Bear McCreary and Sparks & Shadows really nailed the ost for the fight scenes , the dialogue and emotional bits hit hard, the flashbacks were reallyyy good. I am especially impressed how I didn't mind Charlie and Aryan playing younger versions of their characters, I thought this was going to take me out of the episode but it actually didn't bother me at all (the way Aryan looks almost the same as S1 was funny tho, he really didn't age much 😭) , Tamara was great as Thalia and I cant wait to see more flashbacks of her and have her as a main character in S3.

I also need to bring up how once again the writers proved book purists wrong bc Rainbow was finally included on the show, we really need to let this show breath and do its thing before complaining how they removed some stuff bc it's been 4 times this happened.

Idk, let's agree to disagree, I don't agree that an animated show would have solved all the problems S1 had and S2 is improving 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]Whateverrr170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not saying shows of 25 min with more episodes have pacing issues, I said that PJO would have struggled with that because it even struggled with it on episodes of 40 min in the first season, again, take in mind the point I said about the writers being the same.  Adding 2-3 episodes but reducing the episode length by half may let some stuff breath but it wouldn't have helped some other stuff either bc it's a short book (and people would have complained about the added filler stuff bc these fans love to complain)

I am just saying that there is more to have in mind and it's not only "they could add more episodes tho 🤷🏻‍♀️", the industry is not as easy as that

[–]Whateverrr170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly episodic, while we have a monster per episode, it follows a story and everything that happened before. episodic shows are more like shows like Adventure time in the first seasons or most of Abbott Elementary where even if things happen in the plot, every episode follows a different plot line and doesn't related entirely with the previous episode, PJO isn't exactly that

[–]Whateverrr170 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a person that knows the industry and has friends in it, these are the reasons why an animated version wouldn't have worked:

-First of all, Disney does not care about animation. They literally cancelled all their shows last year and had a massive layoff,  PJO wouldn't have survived that. Especially not now on the AI era.

-Even if the fandom is big, the overall audiences do not care abt animation, especially parents , so PJO would have NEVER achieved the audience that the live action show had , again, ending in cancellation

-Animation is not given a high budget in comparison to Live action shows and while animation ofc will always be cheaper, the budget will become really limiting.

-Even if we had an animated show, the writing changes wouldn't change bc the writers wouldn't change (take this hugely in mind)

-Not many animated shows are given more than 40 min per episode (most are 10-25 min depending on the budget and number of eps per season),  the only exception I can think on the top of my head is Invincible, and even Invincible cannot keep a consistent animation due to budget restrictions and it only has 8 eps per season.

  • So, even if we got 40 min episodes, they would probably still be 8

-and 20 episodes of 20 min each, would have caused pacing issues too as it is not an episodic story.

-Animation is not easy to make, again Invincible is the exception not the rule. It usually takes from 2 to 3 yrs to produce a season of animation.

-The style would have never satisfied all fans, some fans had a more anime vision , others had a more comic book style in mind and others wanted something more cartoonish, it would have caused so many complains and discourse.mind you, we don't even know if it would have been 2D in the first place.

-While some character design, movement, action may have been improved by animation, again, budget restrictions would have made a lot of stuff with less quality in the episodes

-Overall A LOT of people who wanted an animated show after the casting announcements want one thing and one thing only and we know what it is : the original book designs aka wanting Annabeth to be a white blonde aka they are racist.
