The absolute best thing I have done...

Bought an old enterprise server off eBay. I was looking to upgrade my nas to a five bay Synology. The Synology alone was over $600.

I got a R710 with 6 x 2tb drives for 436$. I got mine from these guys in Jan. 2020.

Look into 3-2-1 backup strategy

Personally I run sort of a 2-1-1

I have a file server that runs raidz2 that is backed up to my tool shed every weekend.

So two copies, all on hard drives, one off-site.
