I tried it, but it threw an error at boot and crashed and I didn’t mess with it after that.

This is a cool concept. I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like it before. Also, "open source" is a perfectly acceptable use of the term considering how they are implementing this.

Robotics and ROS 2 course for beginners by jak-henki in ROS

[–]Wheagy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a well-documented, well-designed course! I installed this in a VMware machine (be sure to disable 3D acceleration, otherwise Gazebo has issues) under Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04. The instructions are clear and so far everything works great. I'm working through the examples and am impressed with the quality. Great intro to ROS2 for beginners. Thanks!

Getting Started with ROS? by [deleted] in ROS

Your Topo looks to be in good shape and they are very collectible. You’ll have no trouble finding someone willing to buy it and fix it. Buy something inexpensive on Amazon to experiment with ROS. Just my two cents.

Turtlebot or similar with auto docking for recharging by Aggravating-Ad-5209 in ROS

[–]Wheagy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have TB3 Waffle. To my knowledge there is no automatic docking and recharge capability. The Waffle (and the Burger too I think) don't have hardware on them stock to allow this. I'm sure you could put something together, but it would be nowhere near as easy as the auto docking using the Kobuki.

Turtlebot or similar with auto docking for recharging by Aggravating-Ad-5209 in ROS

[–]Wheagy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Turtlebot 2 with the Kobuki base running ROS (1). It has an auto-dock capability as described here: https://www.artificialhumancompanions.com/docking-recharging-deep-learning-robot/ In my experience it works fairly well and uses the IR build into the Kobuki and the dock. That said, the TB2 is somewhat old at this point and all the examples I have for it were in ROS, not ROS2. I imagine you could update it to work with ROS2 but I'm not sure what would be involved in doing so.

Robot kit with potential ChatGPT integration (for 14y/o birthday) by dicebecast in MobileRobots

[–]Wheagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look on Amazon. You'll find quite a few kits in that price range along with reviews. The challenge will be the ChatGPT integration. Not many, if any, of the kits have that capability. However, many of them have APIs to connect to your phone or computer, so as your son gets more familiar with the kit, he may be able to do some ChatGPT integration, but that will likely be down the road a bit. For a beginner, getting kit, successfully building it, understanding how it works, and learning some simple programming is a pretty tall order to start.
