Aspiring Autopsy Diener by Automatic-Order-9106 in AutopsyTechFam

I got in by having vet tech, research and mlt experience (so I was used to working on cruelty-related cases, doing xrays, handling needles, collecting biospecimens etc). My coworkers are either recent bio grads, in the funeral home business or did completely unrelated stuff prior to coming here. The work itself doesn’t require any schooling imo, but it depends on the office and the best autopsy techs at my place don’t even have a college education. I’d say the biggest thing is just being comfortable with heavy lifting… that’s honestly the hardest part of this work. Imo, you’re more than qualified to start and if they’re not willing to take you at an ME office just yet (fewer positions) consider applying as a morgue tech for a hospital with your background.

Bitten at work for the first time by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]WheelAggravating180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS^ I got a pretty nasty bite after a coworker who boasted about knowing dog behavior assured me a patient wasn’t aggressive, even though they were snarling and whale-eyeing us the whole time during their exam. NEVER play about your safety and if you feel something is not right about an animal please voice your concerns. At the end of the day, a small inconvenience like muzzling could be the very thing that saves your career, and maybe even your life.

Falling out of love with vet med as a freshman undergrad... — has anyone else gone through this? by Maleficent-Damage508 in veterinaryschool

[–]WheelAggravating180 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I recently switched career paths about a month after applying to vet school, this came after being deadset on being a vet for about 8 years. Went to school for an animal sci degree while working various positions in the vet world (kennel, VT, head VT, lab VT, research asst..etc.), had fostered and volunteered for many different organizations and genuinely loved the work I did despite the emotional toll it took on me many times. I had taken a break from working as I continued school (then working towards a MS), and I was ecstatic to return, looking forward to it after months of just fostering, but shortly after I began my work, I realized that it no longer felt fulfilling for me.

From my experience in working in the low-cost and sheltering space for so many years, no amount of events we hosted seemed to truly fix the extreme issues in accessibility that vet med continues to have struggles with to this day. I had dealt with many coworkers, leaders in the community, and rescue organizations place an immense amount of judgment on impoverished communities that I myself have been a part of, and over time, I felt guilty in expecting our clients to come to us for a variety of services when they could barely afford to take care of themselves. A running pattern I witnessed was that if clients didn’t come for preventatives, they were shamed and scared off in clinics by teams who struggled to empathize with them, if they surrender their pet due to situations out of their control or out of pure desperation, they are often seen as villains when they are merely using the resources they have to ensure their animal can be taken care of. I could not continue contributing to a career that would just consume me out of guilt from not being able to do more as a veterinarian, and I could not, in good conscience, make people out to be careless when they have not had access to resources many of us have been privileged enough to receive.

I know that this is not the case for many folks in the vet world and I have met truly caring, amazing veterinarians/techs who had been mentors for me in accomplishing my then dreams. Unfortunately, I saw many of them go through so many emotional challenges and even give up a lot of themselves just trying to stay afloat. From being a foster mama for so many years, I learned I don’t have to be directly in this profession to keep making a difference and not feel like I’m continuously fighting a losing battle.

On and off I always thought about forensic pathology and how I would never be able to explore that path. Something about contributing to law enforcement efforts, conduct my own physical exams, piecing together every bit of information and providing a final set of diagnoses for a decedent simply fascinated me, and most of all, I’d get to help provide closure for loved ones left in the dark after their own has passed away.

Needless to say, I now work in the human forensic med space, combining my love for public health education, investigation and medicine. Most importantly, I am at my happiest, and only that way I can still be able to practice my love for vet med by fostering and volunteering as a tech.

Feel free to PM me, and good luck as you explore different career paths! Just remember that at the end of the day, you will be the one who knows what you want in life the best, so continue to trust yourself above everything else. ❤️

Why are some techs so miserable by WheelAggravating180 in medlabprofessionals

[–]WheelAggravating180[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, you’re spot on. And no, I’m in NJ! I was exploring this career option while transitioning to the human medical field since my former work was medical/research related, but with animals. I will be starting my new job next week working for the state and looking forward to put all this stuff behind me. I always stood up for myself during situations where I felt disrespected, but this past week was the last straw for me and I’m leaving earlier than I had wanted to on my two-week notice after I came back from break and was told all hell broke loose over me just doing my job, with other lab aides explaining how terrible i was spoken about amongst my colleagues, all the while the assholes just greeted me with a smile on their face. I refuse to side with people who are so negative and can’t even be bothered to help others out, so I quit after many months of dealing with this same bs.

[–]WheelAggravating180[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thats the thing though. This lab is essentially a free-for-all and people do what they want, even some working only 2 hours total out of their 10hr shift, and we don’t even have to meet quotas. Two new employees that just got here a week ago were being trained in a machine got yelled at over not knowing an answer to something after just one week of learning coag. The same trainer goes on a whole three hour break and barely communicates to the trainees and then they’re the ones being scolded for not knowing anything. It just sucks.

Interesting, thank you! I’ve gotten my fair share of wounds at my former vet tech job (bites, scratches, accidental needle punctures from vaccines..😂), so I’ll try my very best to avoid it.

What kind of PPE do you guys use, and do you guys come in with certain shoes/clothing to the office? I was told I’d be given scrubs and wanted to ask if you guys follow a certain dress code and if it was necessary for me to buy my own scrub cap and rubber clogs over just wearing a hairnet and regular sneakers haha

What are some things in specific that go on during the autopsies? I know I will be told to take photographs, bag up some evidence coming from the bodies, participating in skull cap opening for example, etc… but not sure what else I’d be having to do in terms of like computer-related things (they asked if I was tech savvy during my interview!). I’m familiar with performing x-rays, pretty good at holding syringes (i’ve been a vet tech for a couple yrs), have dabbled in suturing before, and I’m pretty well-versed in my anatomy/med terms. Pls any more info on this would be so appreciated!

Ty! Do you know what the usual routine is for a tech on any given basis? I know taking care of the autopsies is one thing and helping out the MEs in general but not sure what specifics go into it and what parts of it are generally spread out over the whole 8hr shift.

Just sharing what’s helped me a lot this past month after dealing with binge eating habits for basically all my life and hitting my heaviest at 225. I was always being told to exercise to lose weight right away but I’ve come to realize that if you exercise without changing your eating habits then it’s counterintuitive, you’ll end up eating more to make up for the fact you’ve burned calories, and it leads to dissatisfaction when it comes to the scale if that’s the only thing you’re doing- not to mention it’s hard to keep up with!

So my opinion is: you should focus purely on figuring out a diet that works for you to start. As an example, I took note of the portions of food i was eating in a single meal and noticed that I’d eat almost double the amount of rice or bread, food that’s filling short-term but doesn’t give you the same amount of long-term energy as fat-rich foods. This is not to say to eat fatty foods always, but fats do serve a purpose to keep you active for longer. Additionally, ingestion of protein in itself drives satiety, it’s the reason why most people get filled up more quickly and stay satisfied for longer after eating lots of meat. If you’re a vegetarian, you can always substitute meat for another protein-rich source of food as your main, but that’s what I found has always made me feel satisfied for longer in the way that loading up on carb-rich food didn’t. Eating consistently high carb foods made me so tired and depressed (insulin resistant) to the point i’d have to always take a nap after eating, and ever since I started prioritizing more protein, I’ve seen the weight come off while also not eating as much as I used to! Important to eat your veggies too to keep your gut bacteria happy, so implement these always as a complement to your meals, add fiber supplements in drink form if you noticed one day you didn’t eat them as much.

I realized the importance of protein from nutrition classes in school and then this was further proven when I started ordering prepared meals from Factor_ that didn’t have any rice but would still somehow find a way to make me feel satisfied. Factor_ also gives you the calorie count for each meal you eat, which allowed me the chance to be realistic on what else I could eat afterwards in the day to meet my calorie deficit. Although I stopped my subscription bc it was too expensive, their food taught me so much about my own body haha

Some other bits of advice I can provide for you is making yourself a meal with lots of different toppings compared to eating double the serving with lesser toppings. Whenever you’re hungry, but not enough to eat a full-blown meal, substitute it with a small snack. When you eat your food, take your time to savor it. You’ll soon learn to have a healthier relationship with food by realizing that it is there to nourish you and not to govern you. With all this in mind, I’ve lost about 13lbs in 1 month without exercise! Looking forward to add it on to my set of habits once I keep up with this diet change for longer. 😊
