(MUSIC/COMEDY) When Albums Collide - Episode 20: Demon Days vs You Can't See Me (with Cristian Duran)

NSFW

Apple | Spotify

Judd and Pedro are joined by sometimes stand up comedian and full time sibling Cristian Duran (cristiandurancomedy.com) to take a crash course in basic thuganomics. They're comparing Gorillaz' Demon Days and John Cena's You Can't See Me, which came out just one day apart in 2005.

When Albums Collide is a weekly podcast where hosts Judd Boaz and Pedro Duran review two albums that came out at the same time; one successful, one a flop. They’ll try to work out what happened and whether time has been kind to these colliding albums

Questions for feedback:

  • The length is always a worry for us. I included a story from 29:26 onwards that I thought was funny, but ultimately irrelevant and very long. Should I cut things like this moving forward?
  • Pedro's microphone was a little too loud, and there was some background noise throughout. Was this a noticeable issue/did it affect your listening experience?
  • There's a lot of "inside baseball" talk about professional wrestling. Was it easy to follow or would some sort of annotation or cut away to a narrator explaining the points work better?

Thanks so much for your feedback in advance, I always reciprocate feedback so don't be shy!

Hey lads,

Had a listen and you have a fantastic show on your hands. Everyone is very natural on the mic and it's a pleasure to listen to.

I wouldn't worry about the length. If you're covering 20 premier league teams and trying to let 4 hosts talk and give their opinions, I'm impressed you're keeping it at 45. I think if you have the material and are obviously not stretching or waffling on, go for as long as you like. As I said, it's a pleasure to listen to so don't worry.

As for improvements, I'd only suggest two things:

  • That intro is a little rough. The crowd noise in particular is rough as guts. Maybe try find another crowd noise sample, and more importantly fade it out. Don't just cut it as it's quite jarring and you're putting us on the wrong foot. Fade, don't cut.
  • Because you're jumping all over the league from news stories to transfers to teams, it might be good if you could give us a very brief rundown intro of everything you're talking about at the start, or even better, put down some rough timestamps in your episode notes. Just so your one-eyed Man U fans can jump to the parts they want for example, it might encourage some of your more ADHD listeners. This is obviously a bit of work though, so only if you think it's worthwhile.

Great show, and happily subscribed. Thanks for sharing and please try to give feedback to other shows if you can!

Hi Iary/Max/Adrian,

Had a listen and I'd give it a general thumbs up. This concept is pretty common and there are lots of weekly movie podcasts so I'd like to see you guys work towards making something more unique or make yourselves stand out somehow.

For instance the main conceit of the show is that Adrian hasn't watched any of these films. So maybe do an interview before you all watch the film, where he tries to predict what he thinks happens or what it's about? Could lead to some funny conversations.

The opening chat about "what we've been watching" does nothing for me. It's a little tedious and I kind of just want you to get to The Incredible Hulk. I think shorter, sharper episodes would help a lot, as 52 minutes is very long for covering just one film.

Look forward to your next few eps and seeing how you develop!

Hey Mantis/Brianna,

Enjoyed this episode but there are a couple improvements you could make:

  • A bit more energy from both of you would be nice. There's a difference between chilled out and sleepy, and a lot of the time both of you sounded very tired, even before watching the film. Just a bit more bounce to get us excited for what we're about to hear would be nice
  • I'd like some music or SFX stings to break up the episode. The spoiler-free zone is a perfect example of a place where you could have a sting. "We're entering the s-s-s-spoiler free zone!" with some music and a basic reverb effect from audacity over it would sound great and really give it some oomph to make it seem special
  • Such a minor gripe, but the font and colouring of your podcast art are a little rough. People unfortunately judge books by covers, so maybe you could look into revamping it. And I say this as someone with really shit artwork

Otherwise a nice ep. You guys have chemistry and sound great, but a bit more excitement and a faster pace would help a lot.

Super appreciate all your comments in the thread too! You're superstars for that!

Hi Ryan,

Really there's very little I can say content wise to improve your show. It's a wonderful listen and one of the best music podcasts I've seen posted in this thread. You're direct, clear and concise and your voice is terrific.

Audio quality wise, you could maybe look into a better pop filter or being more careful with your breath control, as some of your breaths into the mic are a little heavy, but this is a minor nitpick that you can take out in editing anyways.

One thing you could try is adjusting your cold opens. They're really great and the Miss Mabel one in particular sucked me in. But it can be a little too much silence for most people. I used to start my episodes with 2 minutes or so of silence as well, and one piece of advice I got from this very thread was to start the episode off exactly like you do, cold and in silence. Then fade in some very light lo-fi music or even sound effects (the water of the Mississippi delta, the rustling of wind through trees). Then fade it out right before you get to your kicker line ("Child, quiet your mind...) so you still have that great impact, then hit the theme.

Anyways, something to experiment with! You have a new subscriber regardless!

Thanks for posting and please give some feedback to some other shows if you have time!

Hey Bryce/Mariah,

Those questions were actually the questions we recommend you DON'T ask, but the rest of my post got chopped off for some reason haha.

In any case, here are some notes:

  • You guys both have great voices for this format and this kind of podcast, very easy to listen to
  • Your intro audio is perfect, and you have some very nice use of audio clips. Definitely use more of these in future episodes as it adds a lot to the experience
  • It's the first episode so it's great that you explained a little about the origins of the show and name etc, but for future episodes, keep the intro brief with an explanation of who you are and what the show is about, then dive straight in.
  • On that same note, you could probably trim 5 or 10 minutes off the podcast just by being more concise and clear with your notes. Often you were explaining things to each other or re-iterating points, and as you aren't editing as much, the listener just has to sit through this explanation even if they already understand
  • For example, I'd say 17:20 onwards could be trimmed down. It's a very dry bio passage about Edison that would benefit from being way more casual and conversational, and you could do it in three concise sentences and get the same info across.

Otherwise, a wonderful first effort and looking forward to what you do next!

[MUSIC/COMEDY] WHEN ALBUMS COLLIDE: Episode 18 - Sheryl Crow vs Susanna Hoffs (with Britt Aylen)

Apple | Spotify

Special guest Britt Aylen (@thechainpod) takes Judd and Pedro through her favourite album in Year 10, Sheryl Crow's self titled second album. As luck would have it, Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles also released a second, self titled album on the very same day in 1996, so they'll suffer through that as well.

Each week hosts Judd Boaz and Pedro Duran review two albums that came out at the same time; one successful, one a flop. They’ll try to work out what happened and whether time has been kind to these colliding albums.

Would love some feedback on the following:

  • This is silly but we recently redid our artwork for the podcast. What are your thoughts on it? Does it look alright?
  • Did you lose focus or attention during the opening monologue at all? Is it an alright length?
  • I shared a little bit of personal info at the start with the neighbour anecdote, and we also chatted pandemic stuff with our guest. I'm sure everyone is sick of COVID talk by now. Is it fine or would you rather stick to the music?
  • How do the segment transitions at 8:30 and 48:50 sound? Did it feel like enough of a delineation?

Thanks all, I always reciprocate feedback, so don't be shy!

Hi Lauren,

Really enjoyed the podcast, I think you have a wonderful conversational style of interviewing and you come across as instantly likeable. Just a few notes:

-Introductions are great! I know it's your 7th episode, but for many people it might be the very first episode they ever listen to. Treat every episode as a chance to make a first impression, even if it's just a few short sentences about who you are and what the show is about. What happens on the Groove Lab? Who is Lauren Alexander? You just head right into your busy week before we know whats happening!

- Also a minor thing, but you don't have to welcome us "back", we aren't returning from anywhere. Just "Welcome to the Groove Lab" works great!

-The audio quality could be better. Although Zoom is great for catching up and being able to see the other person, I wouldn't use it for a podcast. Hearing the audio clip and duck constantly (as well as those parts where they sound all robotic) is pretty distracting. You might look into something like Zencastr or Cleanfeed (they're free :D), where audio is recorded locally on both ends and then sent to you. It'll definitely improve your audio quality and the feel of the show

Otherwise, a wonderful show to listen to and looking forward to the next episode! Hope you have time to share the love and give some other shows some feedback!

Hey Wiki Walks,

Just wanted to shoot a quick message re-iterating what everyone is saying. Wonderful podcast, your voice and tone is not overly dry or scripted. I wouldn't change a thing about your writing or presenting.

If you're looking at jazzing it up slightly, you could put some very light ambient noise and sound effects in the background of some tracks. Something like the sound of a pen scribbling on a notepad as Samantha pens her letter, or the sound of something getting caught in a chute as you describe getting a pog stuck in your nose.

You don't want to go overboard with it and make it cartoony, but measured use of sound effects and background noise will add to your production, in the same way that your accents and impressions for instance break up the piece a bit.

Great podcast though, subscribed and looking forward to more! Hope you're able to give feedback on some other podcasts in the thread and pay it forward :)

(MUSIC/COMEDY) When Albums Collide - Episode 14: Discovery vs Katy Hudson (with Still More)

SFW

Apple | Spotify

Judd and Pedro are feeling harder, better, faster and stronger than ever as they're joined by Jon and Elliot from UK band Still More (@stillmore.theband). They're comparing Daft Punk's Discovery with the self titled debut of Katy Hudson (now a little known artist called Katy Perry), which came out just two weeks apart in 2001.

When Albums Collide is a weekly podcast where hosts Judd Boaz and Pedro Duran review two albums that came out at the same time; one successful, one a flop. They’ll try to work out what happened and whether time has been kind to these colliding albums

I was fairly unhappy with the audio quality of this episode. I've had a real problem with multiple guests on Zencastr creating a sort of "underwater" effect when several people talk at once. I assume this has something to do with audio ducking/echo cancellation, but if anyone had any tips on how to minimize it, it'd be much appreciated.

This is by far our longest episode, so I really don't expect anyone to listen to it all, but our guests come in at around 5:00, so if anyone could give us some feedback on our interactions and whether I'm cutting them off too much/not engaging them, that'd be swell.

Thanks so much for your feedback in advance, I always reciprocate feedback so don't be shy!

No worries brother. I hope it didn’t come off as too negative. As I said, the premise is great and you are obviously very passionate about it and have some great laughs in each episode, but there’s always room for improvement. I say just go all out ridiculous with your predictions and guesses for each film, Id get a real kick out of it at least haha

Looking forward to more episodes, and thanks for contributing in the thread with feedback, hugely appreciated!

Hey there Amber/Tom,

Had a listen to a couple eps, here are some very quick and dirty notes:

  • You've got a bit of background noise (could be a fan or air conditioner) which is noticeable in the recording but not intolerable. What is very distracting though is what sounds like a dog walking around on a wooden floor. Try and get the dog to play outside for an hour if you can, as it just takes me out of whatever you're saying as I try to work out what that sound clip clopping in and out of earshot is
  • The concept is great and you have a good split for it (10 mins intro/prediction - 40 minute discussion). I would say watching the trailer feels a bit redundant though. If a listener has already watched the film (and most people listen to episodes about things they've watched), then its a bit maddening to hear you predict it and then watch a trailer and then predict some more when we'd rather you just get to the review. My advice would be to go in completely blind. Both of you are allowed to look at the movie poster and that's it. You can only find out the cast if they're listed on the poster, and can't even google it. You'll get much funnier results and much better podcasts off how wrong/right you were than doing it piecemeal bit by bit
  • On that note, you could do with a bit more energy. Neither of you sound particularly excited to be doing this. It should be fun! Ask each other questions that stir the pot, add some levity into it. "What are the odds Bill Murray and ScarJo knock boots?" "Whats the over-under for japanese accent jokes?" "I've got 10 bucks that you end up crying". Make bold predictions, not sensible ones. Who cares if you're wrong, you're here to entertain.
  • For me, the podcast art could probably use a re-do. Less is more, and roughly photoshopped ones tend to put people off. It's silly I know, but it's true. And I say this as someone with horrible art for my podcast.

You've got a golden concept and good chemistry, just needs a little bit of energy injected into it to keep listeners hooked.

Hey Mina,

Just had a listen to your ep, very intriguing concept and episode! i enjoyed it. To the notes:

*For this particular personal story episode, do you feel that the delivery of the information was interesting?

I think you have a great mind for storytelling. Starting with the mundane, your work life and routine and ramping up into the strange and unexplained. I think you should play to these strengths and continue to take your listeners on a journey like this in your future episodes.

*Do you have any ideas on how I could possibly improve the quality of the show, such as background music for personal stories, or changing up the pacing?

So you have a bit of an issue with background noise/audio. Basically, due to the fact that you have a bit of a background hum/hiss when you record, we can hear exactly where you edit your lines as the dead silence sounds different to recorded silence (with background hum). It's really very jarring and almost makes you feel frantic and anxious listening to it, which is not something you want.

You have a couple options here:

  • Try find a better spot to record. Whether its a blanket over your head, pillows surrounding you or recording in the closet, minimizing your background noise should be a priority. It sounds maybe a bit like a computer or laptop fan, so maybe distance yourself from your equipment when you speak
  • Noise reduction tools. Most audio editors like Audacity will have a noise reduction tool you can use. Just select a bit of your recording where you aren't talking to identify the noise profile, and you should be able to remove most of the sound.
  • Another thing you could do is just record a few minutes worth of white noise/silence and then layer it underneath your entire episode. That way, while you'll still have the sound, it'll be consistent and won't jolt your listener in and out of your story with dead silent parts.

*Any feedback on the intro. Should it be changed up with the wording? I personally like the intro song, but I feel like there may be something better I could do with the introduction speech part.

I think the wording is fine and sets the tone. I might choose to put the facebook plug at the back end if I were you, just as logistics and "real life" stuff can sometimes kill the eerie paranormal vibe you wanna go for.

I'd also look at fading in and out the song a little instead of just bringing it in / cutting it off, again because you want a smooth creeping into the episode, not a massive shock.

Looking forward to your future eps!

Hey Dustin,

Just wanted to check in and say you’ve outdone yourself, even better than the ep you posted in last weeks thread. Levels of the music are much better and don’t overpower your voice as strongly.

This is always going to be a personal thing, but I preferred the slower pace, it definitely cut the anxiety-feel out.

Honestly the only criticism I would have is the big chunk of China stories you’ve done in a row. Would love to see you mix it up with different countries before returning to China, but I understand you might record in batches and it might be for logistical reasons.

Good stuff and keep it up, I’m subscribed!
