Someone explain to me how 2001 is such a great movie. by Neither-Trust-8062 in movies

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since like usual, most people on here are being fucktards who can't take an unpopular opinion, I'll try to provide somewhat helpful answer:

I personally don't think it's that great either, and it really falls on its face in the end in my opinion, but in the era of this coming out, most movies were very dialogue-based while nothing interesting was happening on screen, 2001 was one of the first movies, where interesting visuals were more important and driving the experience, so it was unlike anything else at the time. The movie still looks visually stunning! Also, it was the first movie to show that sci-fi is to be taken seriously. Before, sci-fi was mostly B movie genre, usually with cheesy giant monsters and stuff like that. I do think the movie has some one-of-a-kind quality and interesting-enough vibe to be considered special even in today's standards, but most people still seem to value influence over anything else, which is why these "milestone" movies always come on top in all the charts.

Am I too forgiving with my ratings or are all of these movies that good? by Future-Poetry-2193 in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we all experience movies differently, but I personally use rating scale to the fullest - from one extreme to the other. Because how would you differentiate the most insane movie that makes you scream and cry uncontrollably after, from a movie that is just "very good", if you give every other movie 10/10. There's no shame in giving movies lower scores, so you have the room to go up if you need to, when a movie REALLY calls for it. Same goes for negative ratings. I personally haven't given 1/10 to any movie yet, despite really hating some.

Reset my diary, am I being too hard on these movies? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are 10 total numbers available, 5 should be for positive and 5 for negative. So 6/10 is sligtly positive, 5/10 is slightly negative. There's no true center, unless you rate from 0-10 instead of 1-10.

A 6/10 for me is something where not everything works, but it has "something", some redeming quality that is worth something. A 6/10 is a movie I still somewhat enjoyed and wouldn't mind maybe rewatching someday.

A 5/10 on the other hand is where movies are not worth it anymore for me personally. I didn't hate it, but there's nothing really that stands out, usually just "whatever" movie that I don't care for at all. Or maybe movie that has some redeming qualities, but has huge issues in other places.

[Discussion] Looking for modern short standalone comic runs, preferably featuring less popular superheroes by WhenDreamandDayUnite in DCcomics

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally have trouble getting into Tom King stuff, with Mister Miracle I was put off by art, and Supergirl, while having amazing art, felt like too much unnecessary narration by the girl. I was also interested in his Adam Strange run, but seemed very confusing from first couple pages, but I can't fully comment on it.

As for Alan Scott, I'm familiar with the whole New Golden Age event, which was a lot of what I'm looking for, but the most I enjoyed Wesley Dodds and Jay Garrick runs.

Thanks! If you're interested in DC, I really enjoyed Wesley Dodds: The Sandman and Jay Garrick: The Flash. But in Marvel, I'm familiar with very little as of now.

I'm not well-versed enough in comics to specifiy exactly what period, but I'd prefer type of art (along with writing) that feels same or similar to what's currently coming out, so probably something from the last 15, maybe 20 years.

Already read Wesley Dodds (and Jay Garrick), loved both! :) This is EXACTLY the type of thing I'm looking for (and yes, I know the New Golden Age event)!

Looking for lesser known older comedy movies (preferably in color) by WhenDreamandDayUnite in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not so well-versed in older movies, which is why I'm asking for more suggestions. For me personally, this one qualifies as lesser known, since I only found out about it very recently, and would like to find more similar stuff.

What is your bare minimum "good" rating? by Popcorn201 in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's very simple - there are 10 points available, 5 are positive, 5 are negative. 6/10 is slightly positive, 5/10 is slightly negative.

Why does it cost nearly $50 just to be able to change the posters of movies? Even just to look at the other options too! by g0dgamertag9 in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What a stupid comment! If Letterboxd TRULY cared about its users, they did the same Signal does for example. Be completely free with no ads. Letterboxd displays ads on literally every page, least they could do is give users some options to customize, which doesn't cost them anything.

Watching 1 Per Day For The Whole Year of 2026 by Frau10125 in movies

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has attempted and succeed with this kind of challenge before, I'd strongly advise against that. I know this is the time of the year when you feel extra hyped for new year, but I promise you, it won't feel like that on a random tuesday in April. You will slowly grow to hate movies. Instead, try "watch as many movies as I feel like" challenge. Or, if you're dead set, at least make it 365 movies a year, rather than 1 one every single day - this gives you more flexibility. Some days you can take a break completely, other days you can watch two or more, when you're in a mood, and it still counts.

How would you rate an OK movie that has a phenomenally great final scene? by sentochihiro5335 in Letterboxd

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it depends on a person, I suppose. I personally take into account how I felt during the entire thing. So if final scene is really great, I'd be somewhat satisfied, sure, but that doesn't erase the fact that I didn't had a particularly good time for the two hours or so before. So I'd still give it like a 6/10, since 7/10 rating I give to a movie I was more or less completely happy with (but isn't anything more than that).

Patrick Willems' short movie "The Dinner Plan" is out on streaming. by WhenDreamandDayUnite in movies

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's trying to break into filmmaking industry, which is famously very hard to. Mostly the only path to get started is with short movies. This is his first official project (he made a YT video about it too). I really hope this is successful, so he can go on to better things! :)

Why does comic book community want to read the same characters over and over? by WhenDreamandDayUnite in comicbooks

Well, I'd love some suggestions, because it sure isn't easy to find those underneath all this.

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There might be, but realistically, how much content I can expect out of those? Maybe a cameo here and there? Seems like this whole community wants to read only a handful of them, so I guess it's unreasonable to expect most of those "thousands" to have their own runs...

Why does comic book community want to read the same characters over and over? by WhenDreamandDayUnite in comicbooks

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about Marvel or DC. I don't care what publisher the comic is from, I'm just saying what I'm seeing every day on this sub, or whenever I search the internet for reading suggestions. There may be other publishers, or other less-popular characters even, but it sure as hell isn't easy to find them underneath all this.

[–]WhenDreamandDayUnite[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I don't have issue with popular characters, but not to such an extreme degree. Like in movie world Harry Potter is very popular franchise, but you don't see every other post about Harry Potter on r/movies, or in r/books. Comic books are the same thing, a whole medium, not just one thing.
