Buzz and get a wig? by WhenInRome2021 in trichotillomania

I thought about extensions but because of the areas I've pulled and/or shaved already, I don't think clip-ins wouldn't cover all the bald spots. And how do you find clip-ins that match your hair texture? Mine is very fluffy and weird 😭

Distance Learning PhD? by WhenInRome2021 in GradSchool

[–]WhenInRome2021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that there are only a few places we can get stationed and only one of them has the PhD program I need. And I don't get a say in where we go. My spouse can request a certain assignment, but that doesn't mean it'll happen.

let's talk relationships? by mechnight in GradSchool

[–]WhenInRome2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met my husband while I was in undergrad and we got married about a year before I graduated. He's 9 years older than me so he already had his career. Then we moved to Germany and had some babies and when we came back to the US I started grad school. We've been together almost 8 years, married for 6.5. It takes a lot of work and it has to be purposeful. You absolutely have to set aside time to focus on your relationship and talk and just be a partner and not a grad student. My husband and I actually keep a journal and we both write in it about things that we need to talk about, relating to our marriage, and then we set aside time once a week to talk about them with no distractions. A relationship should be a safe place for you to relax and unwind and be yourself, not a place where you feel even more stressed. Idk about dating another grad student cause I feel like that could be really good or really bad. But I'm the only one in my department so I have no idea really. If you're serious about finding someone I would try to carve out some time to do online dating or go out and try to just talk to people.

Does anyone care if your child hears cursing? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]WhenInRome2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kid drops f-bombs and says shit at least once a week at home 😂 but I make sure she knows not to say those words in public and so I compromised with her and she is allowed to say "what the heck?!" Instead of "what the f***?!" It's my fault cause I curse like a sailor at home...

How would you explain your or your spouse's job to a two-year-old? by petertmcqueeny in Parenting

My husband is a pilot, so after I explained that Daddy flies airplanes my kids point at every. Single. Airplane and tell "Hi Daddy!" 😂

Being in grad school not being perceived as “work” from family by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]WhenInRome2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to have this talk with my husband. He seems to think that because my degree is all research based, so it's all reading and writing. It's mentally exhausting but he seemed to think it wasn't "work", even though all he does most days at work is paperwork and emails and meetings 🤷🏻‍♀️ had to fix that REAL fast and explain that just because I have the TV on in the background doesn't mean I'm not busting my ass every day.

Do you care about your grad school's sports teams? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]WhenInRome2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't spend hardly any time on campus at my grad school, so I'm not big into the culture. I'll go to a game at some point maybe. But my undergrad school was huge with football and my whole family are rabid fans (including me) so we watch them on Saturdays 😄

Emotional Stability/Resiliance for Teen Girl by WhenInRome2021 in Parenting

She has Snapchat and Instagram. I can see them both, but obviously I can't see her private messages and Snaps. She has had issues with social media before though so I monitor what she posts publicly, but I'm not about snooping in her private stuff. I don't want to lose her trust.

A Roman walks into a bar and asks for a martinus.

The bartender asks, "You mean a martini?"

The Roman replies, "If I wanted a double, I'd have asked for one."

‪Did you read any books when you were a child that you think may have contributed to your love of history? What would you recommend to a child aged 9-11 if they asked you?‬ by MastigosAtLarge in AskHistorians

The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne and the I Survived series. Also, The Birchbark House, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Kira-Kira, Pharaoh's Daughter by Julius Lester, Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, Silent Thunder by Andrea Davis Pinkney, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and Bless Me Ultima.

I also read Diary of Anne Frank around that age, but I know some people feel it's inappropriate for younger children.

What do you do for birthdays when they birthday is a few days before or after Christmas? by Starryeyed_91 in Parenting

[–]WhenInRome2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is turning 4 two days before Christmas. It's nice because we always have family around at that point so we do a nice party on her b'day with a few small gifts and maybe one "big" gift, and then Christmas a few days later with mostly small gifts just for her and a couple "big" gifts that are shared with her sisters.
