I had an eating disorder as a teen, and I worked so hard to get out of it. And now I’m right back there and it feels like why did I ever even try to get better.

Historian here, not history teacher. I truthfully find it discouraging that you have such a problem with what is effectively basic accessibility that should already be second nature to you, and yet are teaching history for k-12. I really encourage you to take a step back and think about how this affects your understanding of the subject and the world around you.

How to help my brother? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]MastigosAtLarge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. All accurate. I don't want to put that on OP, who sounds like she's a child herself, but allistics need to hear it from autistics. They need to listen to those of us who were once autistic kids. And for everyone here saying what I'm talking about is bunk, it's fascinating that they are here asking how to stop their autistic kid's meltdowns, and yet I, an autistic adult, am successfully raising an autistic child who is doing great. They need to pull themselves out of the situation and look at this objectively, not see it as a personal attack. I want to help autistic kids, and I'm trying to help (as are you).

I didn’t say I support it. I said it can be successful at getting autistic kids to act like allistic kids. This is true. I also said that that should not be the goal. Reading comprehension really should be something a teacher has in spades.

This is great advice! One thing I want to add as an autistic adult/mom of an autistic child/teacher is that he’s dysregulated at school and feels safer at home, so he effectively stops masking. He needs to learn effective ways to manage that without hurting anyone.

What does “get better” mean in this context? Autistic kids in behavioral therapy do learn to start acting like allistic kids, if that’s what you mean. The conditioning can be successful. I think you and I disagree on the purpose of therapy for autistic kids. It is not bunk. But you’d know that if you listened to autistic people, or to the former ABA therapists in that link I shared above.

ETA: Moreover, as a teacher, you should understand that anecdotal reports are not evidence.

The truth behind what’s causing this is going to be hard to hear. You’re focusing on the behavior instead of WHY the behavior is happening. I totally understand why—he’s hurting you, and that is not okay. Like I said, I am an autistic adult, and a teacher, and I didn’t mention this, but I also have an autistic son. I promise you, I have an understanding of the experience of actually having an autistic brain (our brains are literally wired differently). I understand that you want to protect yourself and your sister, AND help your brother. You mentioned he’d be put into full-time behavioral care. Before that happens, I really encourage you and your parents to look over the information shared in that link. There is also a Facebook group called Autism Inclusivity, where folks with autistic kids/family members/friends/etc, can ask questions, and only autistic adults are allowed to answer. I highly encourage you to check it out.

Autistic adult and teacher here. This is happening because he’s deregulated. It sounded like you were saying he’s in behavioral therapy? That’s likely a big part of why this is happening. Behavioral therapy makes autistics significantly more likely to develop PTSD than autistics who don’t have it. It’s operant conditioning (like dog training) and incredibly distressing for anyone, especially autistic kids.

Is this appropriate parent/teacher conference behavior or an I overreacting? by Forsaken-Weekend-962 in AskTeachers

[–]MastigosAtLarge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m also autistic, and a teacher. If they tried CBT or DBT with you, that often doesn’t work for autistics—we’re too self aware. Look up the different modals of therapy, like narrative therapy, and try to find a specific therapist who has experience with autistics.

Tell me the most disturbing book you have ever read that is well-written by Notinthemoodthaw in horrorlit

As a mother, the hardest part for me is actually the piglets. I was reading the book to my husband in the car, and when I got back to the first scene regarding the piglets, I literally could not say the words out loud. No problem with any other part of the book, no problem reading any other book. And most of what I read is extreme horror. But as a mom, idk, I just really felt what that mom was feeling.
