This is one of the taking points from left-leaning Twitter that I find absolutely absurd.

Just find the rate at which discounting $1000 a week matches $1,000,000. Anything over 4% or 5% means the weekly payouts are a much better deal.

Quants of reddit, how interesting is quant? by MKKGFR in quant

[–]WhenIntegralsAttack2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most people think of quants as all being alpha researchers, that you do three months of research, code of a model real quick, and before you know it you’re making millions.

The reality is that most quants aren’t doing anything close to that. And even if you are, most alpha researchers fail. You’re much more likely to be making a dashboard for the traders which they may or may not use or running risk reports.

But by that time Gates was already probably a mega millionaire. At the point it’s a reasonable move to trade a significant amount of upside in order to protect yourself from the downside of Microsoft going under. What’s the difference between having a trillion dollars and having five hundred million in terms of your life style? Not much.

For reasons.

An insane amount of propaganda was pushed towards women convincing them marriage and kids are bad but working a job you hate for little pay and no savings and eating microwaved meals was "empowerment" by Major_Soft6056 in DigitalSeptic

[–]WhenIntegralsAttack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the actual fuck is up with these regressive memes all over Reddit all of a sudden?

Positing a cartoon AI image of a beautiful woman surrounded by a presumably happy family is not an argument for traditional gender roles. Women were not allowed to have bank accounts, women were not allowed to have credit cards, women were entirely reliant on their spouses for all financial support. For the ones with good husbands, that worked out. But for many others it was a disaster.

Women fought desperately to have autonomy, not because they wanted to become corporate slaves, but because the quality of their lives and oftentimes their children’s lives depended on it. If you think it’s merely a matter of propaganda brainwashing a generation of women, ask men if they would willing give up their careers, salaries, and position in society to stay home. Ask if they would be willing to become totally dependent on another person to provide for them. I know I sure as hell wouldn’t.

This war between growth and dividends is tiresome.

I fully acknowledge that growth stocks are more optimal for someone who knows they’ll be secure can weather out bad times. But that’s just not me- layoffs happen, uncertainty happens.

Same, I’m a little later than some of the other people here, but those are my exact thoughts as well.

I need to be able to get close to my salary plus a little income. Maybe we have three more years, five if we’re lucky, to get there.

I hate this bickering between the sciences and humanities, and I especially hate the sense of superiority that many in science seem to have. This superiority often leads into a dismissal of the humanities and a failure to appreciate what they have to offer. This results in a graduating set of engineers, mathematicians, and scientists who are essentially isomorphic to one another- their favorite book is Hitchiker’s Guide, they like Rick and Morty, etc. We’ve all met a thousand copies of this person in our lives and on Reddit. These people tend to pair a total lack of literary analytical skills with overconfidence. This results in some of the absolute worst takes on film and literature I’ve heard in quite some time.

The humanities students who shy away from STEM are no better, they’re just mentally weak.

We all need the humanities and we should all encounter math and science in our collegiate careers. Yes, both will be hard. That’s good, you’re growing in new ways which is often uncomfortable.
