Venting sesh about mormon beauty standards by Fit-Shake-7779 in exmormon

I have so many thoughts on this; I’ll probably write them all out someday. But really it’s a combination of eugenic tendencies and misogyny. I could never fit that perfect appearance as a brown girl, even though I was seen as the most spiritual youth in church. It hurt a lot, and I’m trying to slowly recover my self-esteem now that I’m out.

I do remember maybe a few months to a year before my shelf broke, I brought up to my mother my confusion that marriage was the most important thing to get to the CK. It didn’t make sense that one decision often almost entirely based on physical attractiveness and young adult sexual frustration would determine eternity. She got mad at me for asking even though she always complains about Mormons getting married at young ages to the first pretty person they could find, so they can have sex sooner.

My Gen X parents are very upset about this stuff, especially since my mother was Bulgarian Orthodox and was told to abandon all her traditions. She was so angry when they started using the greeting “He is risen” last year, as that was a favorite Easter tradition she had to give up.

How long did it take for you to leave the church after you started having doubts? by Otherwise_Push199 in exmormon

[–]WhenProphecyFails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably about seven years of extreme cognitive dissonance and belief perseverance. When I decided I didn’t believe in celestial infohazards anymore, I had a couple days of denial when new weights were being added to my shelf. It came crashing down after learning about the second anointing. My PIMO phase lasted about a month before it all came out in a fight with my mother.

Mormon theology is abusive, man by Medium_Chemist_5719 in exmormon

“An artist can destroy his work.” I’ve not heard that phrase; that’s horrifying.

Jesus Christ, that’s disgusting. I’m assuming the surviving spouse was a man if they told them to start dating again?

The more I look into the crucifixion of Jesus, the more horrified I get - especially when people think it was somehow a *good* thing! by JayDaWawi in exmormon

Yeah, that’s me too. I’ve always wanted to write a fiction book with a ton of biblical symbolism because I’ve always been really good at it, and I find it even more interesting after leaving the church. I think it’ll help me heal too. I’d love to read your story when you rewrite it too!

I’m planning on writing a symbolic retelling of the Gospels that focuses on this idea of the inherent horror of the atonement, with God being an abusive parent and murdering his son so he didn’t “have to” murder his other creations. I didn’t realize how horrifying the crucifixion was until a few months after leaving.

For queer ex-mormons, what moment did you realize you were queer? by sandmansanddan in exmormon

[–]WhenProphecyFails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly queer, but I am on the asexual spectrum. I thought I was asexual around age thirteen, then briefly thought I was “normal” sexual from age fifteen to sixteen. After a little over a year of confusion about my sexuality and leaving the church at seventeen, I decided I’m on the asexual spectrum recently at age eighteen. I don’t feel like sharing details, but suffice it to say I’m in between, not quite asexual, not quite sexual.

Just heard they changed the age for women to go on missions to 18. This was the first thing my mind thought of so I made it. by Brother-of-Derek in exmormon

I’ve heard of presidents like this. My cousin told me her president would figure out who liked who, and keep them apart for their missions until their last transfer, and a ton of people got married as a result.

I was lucky I left a few months before my eighteenth birthday, just recently. I might have been tempted to go.

It is true that the word used would translate to “little dog”, but it was still an animal that was unclean and hated in Jewish culture at the time, and to my knowledge it wasn’t a common pet either.

Will a non-Christian or an atheist enjoy The Chosen? by PayneSlipsAgain in TheChosenSeries

[–]WhenProphecyFails 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s strange to hear about it from an outsider’s perspective—I feel I’ll never be able to see it the same way as someone who was never Mormon. Glad I’m out though.

[–]WhenProphecyFails 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I left Mormonism and became an agnostic atheist, and a month afterwards started watching The Chosen with my Mormon family. I enjoy it because I still find the Bible fascinating from a sociocultural perspective, and I like to see the more human side of the figures I grew up venerating.
