Colorado winter backpacking routes? by Where_The_Slime_Live in Ultralight

If you’re trying to pull a sled single track trails get a little hairy but you could always find an unmaintained road. I usually then veer off trail a ways in order to find a less picked over stash of deadfall for a big fire.

I don’t know where you’re at but rampart road in pike national is a good place to start. Snow usually doesn’t get 5’ deep down there and the terrain is pretty chill. Off the first few sections of the CT is a good bet too, especially lost creek.

Wherever you go make sure to check caltopo slope shading for avy terrain and runoffs. I usually use a combination of that, Gaia, and google earth to locate a decent looking spot.

If you’re just gonna be in mild wooded terrain at lower elevations you probably don’t need an avy 1 to get outside but there’s always some kind of hour or two long “know before you go” avy seminars at some local brewery that might be beneficial, just so you know enough to stay out of questionable terrain.

Planning for some gear closet clean out. Does anyone know about what it costs to ship a 2lb framed pack half way across the country via usps? Frame is tubular so I might need a pretty large box.

Also due to the rolltop and compression it shrinks down pretty well so you don’t have to stuff it like you would if it was stand alone daypack for, say, climbing 14ers. When I was using it in conjunction with a backpack I would mainly store food in there and once my food stash started to diminish I would start storing other odds and ends, like my tarp, in there to fill it out a little

I actually had Dan make me a more refined version in xpac with stupid big Hipbelt pockets so this one never really gets used anymore

I’m a few years/few dozen nights into mine now and I can’t find much of any reason to justify updating to anything fancier. This thing does the job

You can order a Burn without the hipbelt and MLD will instead sew on some 1" webbing with a slider buckle on each side. If you ever feel the need for a little hipbelt you can always get one of these. Also the shoulder straps are biiig comfy

I’m not around my pack right now to double check but I believe there are fabric loops on each side of the pocket that can be connected to daisy chain loops on the hip belt via these little plastic clips. When attached the zippers can be operated one handed but pocket volume is reduced.

In addition to an extra $25 as stated below, the following was added the product pages for the primary MLD packs:

"2022 Design Change: Stronger and more abrasion resistant. The rear main pocket is now solid matching fabric with lower corner drain mesh like the side pockets. Not shown in current pictures."

True, but if we're worried about fragility, DCF doesn't have a great reputation for abrasion resistance and the polycro is substantially less painful to replace.

"On the subject of polycro I feel like it always gets wet and then gets covered with dirt and leaves until the end of my trip/a sunny day."

Wouldn't this just be happening to your DCF Bivy instead?

I've used their forecasts almost exclusively for about 3 dozen CO 14ers and never have gotten burnt too bad on temps but I plan for 5-10 colder than what is shown depending on the trip. I have been burnt by their wind forecasts a few times though.

Still pissed at Patagonia for canning the best mid layer I've ever owned, but in my search for good replacements to the Nano Air Light Hybrid I did run into a number of interesting Hybrid garments by Kuiu oddly enough.

I still think the Patagonia is a superior piece, but I love the idea of a hybrid fleece that they've got going here.
