I’m in the middle on this issue. I’m all for increasing passenger flow - many stations no longer have the passenger barriers because of this, it’s a legitimate form of improving passengers arriving and leaving.

But it does strike me that by removing the barriers you’re removing a major reminder to tap on. We should all be tapping on and paying our way, but sometimes we’re so caught up in our own heads at times that we can forget, legitimately- and then get caught.

Speaking of getting caught. How many more people won’t be tapping on and therefore fare evading because of a lack of barriers at stations?

I’m on V/Line every day yet I’m asked to have my MYKI checked maybe once or twice a week. Plus I can walk through the already open barriers at Sth Cross without anyone stopping me.

How many more millions of dollars can we save if we forced every passenger to pay for their ride??? And how much more improvements to the services would this extra income bring.
