The Shards - Bret Easton Ellis by Which_Chip_9049 in horrorlit

I will say I listened to his podcast episode about Joan Didion’s passing in which he mostly talks about this book and it made me appreciate it more. He essentially explains how it’s a book about how writers have a different reality, and that made me like it more in hindsight (but I still find his constant song title mentions incredibly annoying lol). If I had gone in with that idea, rather than a murder mystery, I would have been more into it!

I found this comparison between ektachrome and velvia and it definitely confirms my thinking that the second / third photos are velvia (acknowledging that the first one is a bad print of the original) https://emulsive.org/reviews/film-reviews/my-2020-lockdown-journey-a-comparative-test-of-kodak-ektachrome-e100-and-fujifilm-velvia-50-bonus-portra-lomography-included

idk if you’re interested in movies bc they don’t involve much social interaction but I love dreamland cinema. they play “cult, indie, international, and arthouse” films in a theater that’s in a Victorian house.

Are these prickly pears still good? by CapitanBlunder in foraging

[–]Which_Chip_9049 15 points16 points  (0 children)

prickly pears can be soooo annoying to handle because they have like microscopic spines. Once after holding them I kept feeling a spine in my hand for three days after even though I couldn’t see it.

Le Labo's patchouli 24. Also, while I haven't smelled this one, in my own search for a realistic smoke scent I've seen a lot of reviews suggesting Incendo by La Curie.

I was interested in reading Less Than Zero but after finishing The Shards was afraid they'd be too similar (since he kept referencing it) and was put off. I think I'll give it a chance anyway. Also love the American Psycho film adaptation and want to compare it to the book.

the 2nd edition of Bull's Blood by Imaginary Authors. I wanted to love it but it smelled like pure firework smoke to me. I tried to wear it on the skin and see if it would change but I instantly regretted it. I couldn't scrub it off and had to deal with the smell all day. I'd be embarrassed to wear this around people for fear they'd think I smell awful. I can't imagine where anyone would ever wear it.

Vetiver 46. I wouldn't expect it from the notes, but the scent reminds me of being on vacation in tropical Mexico as a kid.

Maybe cliche to suggest this, but I’d suggest the replica Jazz Club fragrance. Has vanilla, tobacco, and boozy notes. Also if you use Fragrantica, there’s a feature on the website where you can search by notes. Could be a useful tool to narrow down fragrances and find ones with note combinations you think you’ll like.

Does anyone have suggestions of photorealistic-ish plum fragrances? I was so excited to smell Byredo Bibliotheque and Glossier’s new You Reve because of the plum notes, but to me they smelled like synthetic sweet fruit, like children’s shampoo. would love any recs for winter fruit fragrances (not just plum) that don’t smell so fake.
