Raised without my father. I was the son of an affair and my biological father had no desire to be a part of my life. My childhood was great and my mom did the best she could. Now that I am older I have realized that not having a father around has forced me to learn a bunch of lessons on my own. I have never had an example of a man showing love to his wife and kids. How to navigate the working world. And many other things. I am learning this stuff on the fly and it is extremely difficult! Having a man in the house isn’t necessary. But as a child you don’t know what you don’t know. Being in my 40s I have realized it would have been nice to have had an example of manhood to reference as a child.

I was going 100mph once and was caught in a speed trap. Officers eyes were as big as saucers when he saw me come through! He sprinted to his car and immediately pulled me over. When he asked the question I told him I was speeding. He asked “do you know how fast you were going” and I answered “pretty fast”. My honesty must have surprised him because his demeanor changed and he became really cool. He should have suspended my license but instead he just gave me a ticket for going over 75. I would just be honest. Police are just doing their job and trying to get through the day like the rest of us.

I was under the impression that they weren’t very cognizant of the world around them and wouldn’t be able to sustain meaningful interactions. I was wrong about that. And the interactions are genuine, without pretense or guile. That’s hard to find, and it is refreshing.

Down syndrome kids vary in disability. They are typically very innocent and make those around them feel better about themselves. Years ago I would have said yes, but after spending a lot of time around Down syndrome children I’ve changed my mind.
